Welcome to Candy Corn Day!

Candy Corn Day celebrates candy corn, the corn kernel shaped candy often eaten during Halloween and throughout the autumn months. The candy is multicolored, with a broad yellow end, tapered orange middle, and white tip, and is usually made from sugar, corn syrup, confectioner's wax, coloring, and binders. It began being manufactured in the 1880's by the Wunderlee Candy Company, and was originally called "Chicken Feed." At that time candy corn was marketed to rural residents. Around the turn of the 20th century, the Goelitz Confectionery Company—now known as Jelly Belly—began making candy corn. Today's recipe for candy corn is basically the same as it was when it was invented, except at that time the candy was made by hand, which is no longer the case. There are variations of the candy corn for different holidays and occasions. "Indian corn" has a chocolate brown end instead of the yellow, and is popular around Thanksgiving. During Christmas, "reindeer corn" with a red end and green center is popular. With Valentine's Day comes "cupid corn", Independence Day has "freedom corn", and you can buy "bunny corn" during Easter. There have been variations on flavor such as caramel apple, green apple, s'mores, pumpkin spice, and carrot cake. It is estimated that over 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold annually.

Virginia Tech Football: Brent Pry Compliments Kyle McCord Ahead of Matchup on Saturday (SI; Schafer)

Kyle McCord is one of the most polarizing figures in college football. On one hand, he leads an offense which throws 349 passing yards per game, third in the country. On the other hand, McCord has thrown eleven interceptions on the season, tied for the second-most at the FBS level, and the most interceptions thrown by a Power Four quarterback in 2024.

Brent Pry seemed to think very highly of Syracuse's transfer quarterback in his press conference this week, saying, "They've got an superbly talented quarterback-- a guy that leads the league in passing with a 64% completion rate." Pry also spoke in length about McCord's weapons on offense, speaking on Oronde Gadsden's dominance and the depth at wide receiver for the Orange, "You could throw that thing up and [Gadsden's] got a heck of a chance to go get it." He also mentioned that Syracuse has three or four wide receivers that the Hokies "have to be aware of."

This season, Syracuse has three receivers that have recorded more than 450 receiving yards on the year. Leading receiver Jackson Meeks has 512 yards, Trebor Pena has 509 yards, and hybrid tight end Oronde Gadsden has 466 yards on the season. LeQuint Allen has 274 yards too and Umari Hatcher has 254 yards. Safe to say, Fran Brown likes to spread the ball around on offense.

The matchup between Virginia Tech's run-heavy offense and Syracuse's pass-reliant offense will kickoff on November 2nd on the CW Network. In the last matchup between Syracuse and Virginia Tech, the Hokies annihilated the Orange 38-10, but this is a completely different Orange team than last year, and Kyle McCord will look to right his 5-interception performance last week against the Pitt Panthers.

Know the Foe: Syracuse Orange (hokiesports.com)

The Hokies are set to kick off November with a trip to New York, riding the momentum of their first three-game win streak since 2019. This weekend’s matchup marks the 21st meeting between Virginia Tech and Syracuse, as the Hokies gear up for their second-to-last road game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Saturday, Nov. 2, with live coverage on The CW. In this week’s edition of Know the Foe, presented by AAA, we’ll break down what to expect from the Orange and how the Hokies stack up in this ACC clash.

Syracuse reached its second straight bowl game last season, wrapping up with a 6-7 record. However, it was the Orange's fourth losing season in five years, leading to the dismissal of head coach Dino Babers after eight seasons. One of those losses was a 38-10 blowout in Blacksburg, where Hokies’ running back Bhayshul Tuten racked up 118 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, while quarterback Kyron Drones connected with Da’Quan Felton three times for 80 yards and two scores.

Now under the leadership of first-year head coach Fran Brown, Syracuse has shown signs of improvement, starting the season 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Brown, who came from Georgia as a defensive backs coach, has already made an impact, bringing in the program’s first top 40 recruiting class since 2001 and strengthening the roster with key transfer portal additions—including former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon, previously a running backs coach with the New York Giants, has installed a balanced attack that leans on both the pass and the run. McCord, a traditional pocket passer, has thrown for 2,481 yards this season, excelling in clean-pocket and deep-passing situations. He’s developed chemistry with top targets Jackson Meeks, who has 512 receiving yards and three touchdowns, and Trebor Pena, who’s posted 509 yards and five scores.

On the ground, the Orange are powered by running back LeQuint Allen, who has 481 rushing yards and four touchdowns, adding another dimension to their balanced offense. However, this unit will be tested by a Hokies defense that has found its rhythm, particularly in the secondary. Virginia Tech’s defense has seven interceptions this season, including two in the win over Georgia Tech. Linebackers Jaden Keller and Caleb Woodson have also emerged as key contributors, each with 47 total tackles, while defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland has been a disruptive force, recording 11 sacks.

Kyle McCord climbs into 3 more Syracuse football records lists despite 5-interception performance (PS; $; Leiker)

Even on a down day, Syracuse football quarterback Kyle McCord continued to solidify himself in the Orange‘s record book in the program’s Thursday night loss at Pittsburgh.

McCord maintained his now seven-game streak of throwing for 300 yards despite the loss and a career-high five interceptions. He completed 35 of a season-high 64 pass attempts for 321 yards — his fewest of the season.

The showing gave McCord his debut in the Top 10s for season pass attempts, season completions and season yards. He climbed all the way to the middle of the pack in completions, sitting now at No. 5.

Though McCord did rush for a touchdown against Pitt, it was his first game this season without a passing touchdown. He’s thrown for at least two touchdowns in every other game this season. He holds tied for sixth with 19 passing scores.

McCord’s season passer rating dipped from 147.9 to 135.6, dropping him from where he’d been tied at eighth to back outside the Top 10.

His numbers also fell in completion percentage (down 2%) and average passing yards per game (down 10.8), but he held steady at his positions on each of those lists regardless.

Syracuse football showing interest in 4-star QB who just de-committed from Rutgers (itlh; Adler)

Elite 2026 four-star quarterback Gavin Sidwar from Pennsylvania, who held a Syracuse football offer before committing elsewhere, has reopened his recruitment.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Sidwar said via his X page on October 27 that he was de-committing from Big Ten Conference member Rutgers and reopened his recruiting process. Sidwar is a junior at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pa., the same program of three-star wide receiver Julian McFadden, who verbally committed to the Orange in its 2025 class this past April.

Sidwar said on X that he received a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse staff, led by first-year head coach Fran Brown, on January 24 of this year. Per social media posts, Sidwar was on the Hill for an unofficial visit on June 21. He verbally pledged to Rutgers on July 1.

Syracuse Needs The Run Game Against Virginia Tech (orangefizz.net; Daley)

Syracuse’s 41-13 loss against No. 19 Pitt was an ugly one, but it will have a chance to redeem itself against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

The Hokies have the momentum, winners of three straight after beating Georgia Tech 21-6 on Saturday, a team the Orange beat earlier this year for its first ranked win of the season. Still, it’s a winnable game for Syracuse, and as extra motivation, the Orange will be playing its first game at home since its Family Weekend triumph over Holy Cross on Sep. 28.

Ezoic
Beating Virginia Tech won’t propel the Orange back near the AP poll rankings, but it will prepare Syracuse for a tough game against Miami to close out the season, which is currently ranked No. 5 in the country. On both sides, the key to success in this game will be on the ground.

Syracuse football: Injury and availability updates from Fran Brown for Virginia Tech (TNIAAM; De Guzman)

The Syracuse Orange will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday at 12:00 pm. After Syracuse’s 41-13 loss to Pitt, the Orange are still looking for a win to become bowl eligible for the third year in a row. Syracuse Head Coach Fran Brown gave updates on some key players during his weekly press conference.

Brown first confirmed that TE Oronde Gadsden is “good to go.” Gadsden was seen in street clothes towards the end of the Pitt game and was reportedly going through concussion protocol. The tight end is Syracuse’s third-leading receiver with 466 yards and three touchdowns this season. He sits behind Jackson Meeks (512) and Trebor Pena (509) in receiving yards this year for the Orange. Gadsden missed most of the season last year with a Lisfranc injury he suffered in the second game of Syracuse’s 2023 campaign.

Brown also said he was “not sure” if RB Yasin Willis would be able to play against Virginia Tech. Willis was hurt towards the end of the Pitt game with what Brown confirmed as a high ankle sprain. Brown didn’t completely rule out the true freshman from playing on Saturday.

“If he’s anything like his pops, he’ll be playing Saturday,” said Brown.

Don't stop believing...Syracuse Orange football season is far from over (itlh; Fiello)

Syracuse Football: Don't stop believing ... the Orange's 2024 season is far from over

Hey Loud House family, I'mmmm backkkkk!

That's right, your friend Orange Chuck is back home at Inside the Loud House. For those of you new here, I had to take a break for family reasons as well as technical reasons but after a year hiatus, I am back to share my mostly positive and uplifting takes on Syracuse Orange sports.

For those who have been following since before I left, I hope you are as happy to have me back as I am to be back. And to my brother from another mother, our editor Neil Adler, I am happy to run down the field with you again my brother man.

Now whether you remember me or not, this is the perfect way to either introduce or reintroduce myself by saying one thing...THE SYRACUSE FOOTBALL SEASON ISN'T OVER YET!

Syracuse football's 2024 season is far from over.

Syracuse football is 5-2, which I know despite some expectations preseason might be a let-down but not for me. This team is still one win away from bowl eligibility with winnable games left on the schedule. In fact, I will go so far as to say I still believe that with the current talent level on this team, there isn't a game left on the schedule that they can't win.

I see a team that is not giving up and playing hard. I see no players jumping ship yet and still buying into this program. I see Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown saying in his press conference that this season is not over and I believe him. I see a team that is dealing with injuries, yes, but nothing to make us believe that injuries could cost this team the season.
Kyle McCord. Marlowe Wax. LeQuint Allen. Oronde Gadsden II. Trebor Pena. Fadil Diggs. Jackson Meeks. Justin Barron. I mean this is just 8 players from a talented roster that I believe has the deepest roster in many years, and there is also a lot of potential just waiting to prove they will be the next big Orange star as well.
So don't count out anything just yet as there is a lot of football left to play. I still think 8 to 9 wins is very possible and would not even rule out 10 wins, either, if things click right. I still believe in this team and hope you do, too.

And with 5 games remaining (3 of which are at home in the Dome), Syracuse has Virginia Tech at noon this Saturday in the JMA Wireless Dome. So let's show up, tune in and root root root for the home team, and let's show this team that we are behind them. My brother Neil has all the information you need to find more details on this game here.

Miami, the BEST Program in the state of Florida? Mario Cristobal turning Canes into ACC POWERHOUSE (youtube; podcast; On3)

The Miami Hurricanes have been DOMINANT thus far in the 2024 season, and it leads to the question: Is Miami the best team in Florida right now? And the answer is a resounding yes. Watch here as Andy & Ari take a deep dive into Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes as they take on Duke this weekend.

Florida State vs. Miami Full Game Replay | 2024 ACC Football (youtube; video; ACC DN)

It was Homecoming weekend in Miami as the Hurricanes remained undefeated and advanced to 8-0 on the season with the 36-14 win over in-state rival Florida State. Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward completed 22 of 35 passes for 208 yards in the win. While he didn’t pass or rush for a touchdown for the first time all season, Ward did catch a touchdown pass from tight end Elijah Arroyo. Miami running back Damien Martinez carried the ball 15 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes ground attack.

ACC power rankings: Miami jumps Clemson, UNC football rises after dramatic Week 9 (247sports; Hughes)

A dramatic Week 9 led to changes atop the ACC power rankings and bowl projections for each league team. SMU's 28-27 overtime win at Duke highlighted three one-score games. Miami throttled rival Florida State at home while Clemson enjoyed a bye week, shaking the top of the league power rankings. The updated rankings entering Week 10 reflect the conference's tight results.

Miami is 8-0 for the first time since 2017, but defensive struggles caused the Hurricanes to trail Clemson in the power rankings for the last month. Miami's defense ranked No. 120 (of 133 teams) in the nation through the first three weeks of October but found a rhythm in the 36-14 win over Florida State.

ACC play enters the heat of its conference championship race entering Week 10. Six conference matchups have the potential to shake up league standings this week. FanDuel predicts three one-score games, highlighted by Pittsburgh's ranked road trip at SMU (-7).

Here are the updated ACC power rankings entering Week 10:

17. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (1-7, 1-6)

Week 9 Result:
Lost to Miami, 36-14
Florida State fell to 1-7 with a blowout loss to rival Miami in Week 9. It's the worst start for the Seminoles program since 1975 and marks Mike Norvell's third losing record in five seasons in Tallahassee. Norvell shared his message Monday to prospective recruits at his press conference.

16. STANFORD CARDINAL (2-6, 1-4)

Week 9 Result:
Lost to Wake Forest, 27-24
Stanford lost five straight since its miraculous win over Syracuse on Sept. 20 with four of those losses coming by 25 points or more. The Cardinal kept it closer in Week 8 but fell short after quarterback Ashton Daniels tossed a game-sealing interception with 22 seconds left in the game. Stanford had made it into field goal range.

15. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (4-4, 0-4)

Week 9 Result: Beat Oregon State, 44-7
California is still looking for its first ACC win but got back to .500 with an impressive home win over Oregon State in Week 9. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for a career-high 364 yards while freshman Derek Morris tied a school record with five made field goals in the well-rounded effort.

14. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (4-4, 2-3)

Week 9 Result:
Lost to North Carolina, 41-14
Virginia's promising 4-1 start unraveled in recent weeks. The Cavaliers finished with just 18 rushing yards, allowed 10.0 sacks and benched quarterback Anthony Colandrea in favor of Tony Muskett against a North Carolina defense that entered the game ranked in the bottom third of the league in every major defensive category.

13. NC STATE WOLFPACK (4-4, 1-3)

Week 9 Result: Open
NC State pulled out a thrilling win at Cal in Week 8, giving the program a much-needed spark heading into its bye in Week 9. Quarterback CJ Bailey had one of his best games in an NC State uniform against the Golden Bears. The freshman completed 69% of his passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

12. BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES (4-4, 1-3)

Week 9 Result:
Lost to Louisville, 31-27
Boston College went winless in the month of October, dropping a nail-biter at home to Louisville in Week 9. The Eagles get a much-needed bye week. The health of quarterback Thomas Castellanos factored into the team's struggles. This is a chance for him to get healthy.

11. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (4-4, 2-2)

Week 9 Result:
Beat Stanford, 27-24
Wake Forest picked up its second-straight win and got to .500 in the ACC with its win at Stanford. The Demon Deacons are 3-0 on the road for the second time under Dave Clawson and the sixth time in program history.

10. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (4-4, 1-3)

Week 9 Result:
Beat Virginia, 41-14
North Carolina got star edge Kaimon Rucker back to health, and it made all the difference for the Tar Heels as they rolled up their largest win over rival Virginia in 2013. Rucker racked up 3.0 of UNC's 10.0 sacks, its most since 2000. Quarterback Jacoby Criswell had arguably his best game in a Tar Heel uniform, competing 19-of-30 passes for 293 yards and two scores. UNC hopes it can carry momentum into its Week 10 trip to Tallahassee. Mack Brown is 0-11 against Florida State, including a 0-8 mark at UNC.

9. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-4, 3-3)

Week 9 Result: Lost to Virginia Tech, 21-6
Quarterback Haynes King missed his second game with injury as Georgia Tech dropped its second straight. The Yellow Jackets out-gained the Hokies 356-233 but mustered just two field goals behind a pair of untimely turnovers from quarterbacks Aaron Philo and Zach Pyron. Georgia Tech's offensive woes masked an elite effort from the defense, which racked up 11 tackles for loss and allowed the program's fewest yards in a road game since 2012. Georgia Tech hopes it can get King back after the bye.

8. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (4-3, 2-1)

Week 9 Result: Beat Georgia Tech, 21-6
Virginia Tech secured its first three-game win streak since 2019 with a strong win over Georgia Tech in Week 9. The Hokies defense kept the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone for the first time since its 42-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 17, 2022. Quarterback Kyron Drones completed 16-of-27 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions while running back Bhayshul Tuten picked up 79 yards on 17 carries.

7. Duke Blue Devils (6-2, 2-2)

Week 9 Result: Lost to SMU, 28-27
Duke started 5-0 under first-year head coach Manny Diaz but lost two of its last three games ahead of its big-time road trip to Miami in Week 10. The Blue Devils fell to SMU in overtime this past weekend despite forcing six turnovers on defense. Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy posted career-highs with 295 passing yards and three passing touchdowns against the Mustangs and didn't turn the ball over.

6. Syracuse Orange (5-2, 2-2)

Week 9 Result: Lost to Pittsburgh, 41-13
Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord delivered a historically bad outing in a blowout loss at Pittsburgh, throwing five interceptions and becoming the first quarterback to throw three pick-sixes in a game since 2015. The Orange found itself in a 31-0 deficit at halftime and never found the momentum to make the game competitive. Fran Brown and the Orange face a Virginia Tech at home for the first time since 2016.

ACC Football Power Rankings - Week 9 (backingthepack.com; PWolf)

1. Clemson (last week: Bye)

After a week off, the Tigers host Louisville this week before road trips to VT and Pitt round out their ACC schedule.

2. Miami (last week: 36-14 W vs Florida State)

Playing a rival that lacks a functioning offense, this one was over when Miami went ahead 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter on a 13-play, 95-yard drive. The Canes scored on 7-of-8 drives (not counting the final kneel down), but could have really blown this thing out early had they not settled for three straight field goals in the middle part of the game. Cam Ward went without a TD for the first time this year, but remains a really good football player (shocker). Damien Martinez went for 148 yards and 2 TDs on just 15 carries. Miami hosts Duke this week.

3. Pittsburgh (last week: 41-13 W vs Syracuse)

The Panthers put together an incredibly impressive win, jumping out to a 31-0 halftime lead on the back of a trio of pick-6’s. That’s kind of hilarious. One could point to Pitt only having 217 yards of offense in the game, but when you score three defensive touchdowns, your offensive opportunities are going to be limited (they still 4.93 yards/play). Pitt remains undefeated in both conference play and overall. A huge road date awaits this week with...

4. SMU (last week: 28-27 W @ Duke)

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. The Mustangs were -6... NEGATIVE SIX... in turnover margin, and yet somehow won. They also had more penalties for more penalty yards... and yet somehow won. Luckily for SMU, Duke did nothing with those six turnovers - not a single point on the ensuing drives - and the Mustangs quest for a conference title in their first season in the ACC lives on. Granted, anymore efforts like the one last week and that dream will be dashed in quick fashion. Next up is a home game against Pitt.

5. Louisville (last week: 31-27 W @ Boston College)

For the fifth straight week, the Cards played a one-possession game. For just the second time in that span, they came out winners. That almost didn’t happen, though, as BC jumped out to a 20-0 lead and led 27-10 midway through the 3rd quarter. Louisville turned it on late, though, scoring the last 21 points to pull out the victory. This is still a team capable of beating anybody, but also goes through spells where they look like they could lose to anybody. Next up is a likely loss on the road at Clemson.

6. Virginia Tech (last week: 21-6 W vs Georgia Tech)

The Hokies offense did just a little more than nothing, but it was enough to top GT. VT got off the field when they needed to and forced the only two turnovers in the game, which was all the difference. Not a confidence-boosting win, but a win nonetheless - and one which puts the Hokies one more win away from a bowl game. Syracuse comes to town this weekend.

7. Duke (last week: 27-28 L vs SMU)

If this Duke team had an offense that was worth a lick, they’d be looking at this week’s matchup with Miami as a potential elimination game for - or maybe a preview of - the ACC Championship Game. Instead, the storyline of Manny Diaz returning to play spoiler against his hometown team and former employer will have to suffice. Seriously, how do you force six turnovers and lose? That’s impressive... in a very not good way.

8. Syracuse (last week: 13-41 L @ Pittsburgh)

Boy, that one got away from the Orange in a hurry. Kyle McCord completed 5 passes to dudes in the wrong jersey, and three of those went for touchdowns. I still contend that Syracuse’s approach of having McCord air it out almost non-stop is not the best use of those offensive weapons... buuuuut that team is 5-2 overall, so what do I know? Even outside of the turnovers, the Orange offense managed just 3.5 yards/play on the day despite running 93 plays. Cuse hosts VT this week.

The next step in the process will be to select the award’s 16 semifinalists from the 35 quarterbacks. The semifinalists will be chosen based on voting from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee as well as bonus ballots awarded from the first round of the Davey O’Brien Fan Vote.
For the fifth straight year, the Fan Vote will take place on the award’s three social media platforms—Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (X)—and the top five vote getters on each platform will receive bonus committee member ballots which will be added to the votes cast by the National Selection Committee.

Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.
The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The 48th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner honoring the winner will be held Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

New ACC Trophy Unveiled

From the official ACC release of Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024...

ACC Unveils New Championship Trophy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday unveiled its new championship trophy. This marks the first time the ACC has changed its trophy since the league’s expansion for the 2014-15 school year.
“With the new era of the ACC and our now 18 member schools, this trophy represents an evolution to a sleeker, more modern design while still paying respect to our previous trophy,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “We are incredibly proud of our 28 sponsored sports and the amazing student-athletes that compete at the highest level for ACC and NCAA Titles. The new ACC trophy will be a fitting award for our teams’ capturing a hard-earned championship.”
The new trophy comes as the conference prepares for its first championships of the 2024-25 school year on Friday, November 1, with the league’s men’s and women’s cross country programs competing in the 2024 ACC Championships in Cary, North Carolina.
The new trophy weighs 22½ pounds and stands 26 inches tall, but is more compact, which will make it easier to hold and hoist. It builds on the previous iteration of the trophy and features many of the same components. The color scheme and materials are consistent with those of the previous version, while the base features a similar design and the same material as its predecessor. The league’s 18 schools are represented in the middle panel, while the year, sport and winning institution are listed on the front panel.
The trophy also features the league’s tagline “Accomplish Greatness” on each side as well as ACC logos in multiple positions so the conference logo is visible from all angles.

From ideation to completion, the ACC worked with its trophy and awards partner, Jostens, to create the new trophy. The ACC and Jostens have been partners for more than 20 years.

Injury non-report

From AP: #18 Pitt taking a ‘wait and see’ approach with QB Eli Holstein ahead of visit to #20 SMU

Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein left during the fourth quarter of a 41-13 win over Syracuse last week with an undisclosed injury... Pitt travels to No. 20 SMU (7-1, 4-0) on Saturday.
Coach Narduzzi said immediately after the victory over the Orange that Holstein was fine and likened it to having dirt in his eye. Narduzzi, who avoids discussing injuries to any player, was vague when asked Monday about Holstein’s status.
Narduzzi said backup quarterback Nate Yarnell will get some reps with the first team in practice, though that is not necessarily unusual...

New OOC Series for NC State
From FBSchedules: NC State schedules home-and-home football series with Kansas State for 2027, 2032

...the first game of the series will be slated for Sept. 25, 2027, at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The return date is set for Sept. 18, 2032, at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.
The schools have played just once — a 28-19 K-State decision in the 2023 Pop Tarts Bowl.

You may recall that NC State previously had a home-and-home series with the Florida Gators on the books, but that series was canceled by mutual agreement. In my mind, this is a more appropriate opponent for the Wolfpack.

Drone delivery business wins $1M grand prize in GENIUS NY competition (PS; $; Moriarty)

A company from Norway that operates a drone delivery service was the $1 million grand prize winner in the GENIUS NY business competition in Syracuse on Monday.

Aviant, of Oslo, Norway, was chosen by a panel of judges for the top prize following presentations by representatives from the competition’s five finalists. The event was held at Marriott Syracuse Downtown.

Aviant operates a delivery service in Norway called Kyte, which uses drones to deliver food orders from selected restaurants, groceries, and over-the-counter medicines over a range of up to 75 miles, according to the company’s website. Customers place their orders using an app.

GENIUS NY is an annual business competition focused on the uncrewed systems field. Funded by Empire State Development Corp. and administered by CenterState CEO, the competition is open to startups from around the world.

Winners are required to operate their businesses in Central New York for at least one year. In addition to the prize money, the yearlong program offers resources, mentoring and connections at The Tech Garden in downtown Syracuse.

The four other finalists will receive $500,000. They are:

Aerialoop – Miami, Florida

Aerialoop’s drones streamline deliveries by creating efficient middle-mile networks between warehouses and stores, enabling faster and more affordable shipping.

Crover – Edinburgh, Scotland

Crover develops uncrewed vehicles/systems that can “swim” through grains and powders to monitor and manage grain storage more accurately, helping operators reduce losses, improve quality and ensure better safety.

Owner Jamie Crouse with the piece of memorabilia called the "torpedo," the "missile" or the "bomb" at The Night Drop. The bar opened June 13 in the location on Seneca Turnpike once occupied by the legendary Valley dive bar, The Remedy.

Remember The Remedy? Legendary Syracuse dive bar location is for sale (PS; $; Cazentre)

For more than 40 years, The Remedy was the definition of a Syracuse dive bar. For the past four years, it’s attempted to carry on that tradition as The Night Drop.

Now the bar at 363 W. Seneca Turnpike in the city’s Valley neighborhood is for sale. That includes the property, the business and most of the furnishings and equipment. The listing price is $274,500.

Owner Jamie Crouse, for now, is keeping The Night Drop open. It offers drinks, pool and darts and live music. There’s a special Halloween Show scheduled for Thursday night.

Crouse could not be reached for comment on the sale.

The Remedy, at Seneca Turnpike and Valley Drive, across from Gannon’s Ice Cream, closed in 2015.

Crouse, a veteran restaurant chef, bought it a year later with the intent to reopen it as a neighborhood bar. But a series of misfortunes, including a debilitating motorcycle accident and then the Covid pandemic, delayed the project.

» The Remedy: Goodbye to ‘amazing and hilarious’

The Night Drop finally made its debut in June 2020, just after the state allowed bars and restaurants to reopen with some restrictions after the initial Covid outbreak.

He had spruced it up a bit but kept many of the odd knick-knacks and other decorations, including a vintage World War II smoke bomb that patrons often called the torpedo or missile.
