Welcome to Election Day!

Election Day is a day set aside in the United States for the general election of federal public officials, which include the president, vice president, and members of Congress. It takes place on "the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November," which translates to the first Tuesday after November 1, which falls sometime between November 2 and November 8. The presidential election is held every four years, during years that are divisible by four. Elections for members of the US House of Representatives and US Senate are held every two years: all Representatives are up for election each election, as they serve two-year terms, while the elections of Senators are staggered, with only a third of them being up at a time for election to their six-year terms. The elections that take place halfway between a president's term are called midterm elections.

Syracuse football’s Marlowe Wax receives ACC honor following first game back at Dome (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football‘s Marlowe Wax was named ACC Linebacker of the Week after a strong performance in SU’s 38-31 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Wax made nine tackles, the second-most on the team, and had 1.5 sacks against the Hokies. He also forced the overtime fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Fadil Diggs to ice the game.

It is Wax’s second time receiving the honor this season in just three games played. He missed five games following a Week 1 injury to his right lower leg and made his game return Oct. 24 against Pittsburgh.

Wax was first named ACC Linebacker of the Week for his partial-game performance against Ohio in the season opener. He had six tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in that game.

Saturday was Wax’s first game played at the JMA Wireless Dome since his injury.

"It was pretty emotional walking into the Dome knowing the last time I was here, I thought it was all over," Wax said postgame. “I had to get in the right mindset.”

Wax had to briefly leave the game, which he said was “scary as ever” but had ultimately just had the wind knocked out of him. He played 72 snaps, his most of the season.

LeQuint Allen's OT touchdown wins it for Syracuse: Local college football notebook (pressofatlanticcity; Russo)

LeQuint Allen
scored his second game-winning touchdown of the season for Syracuse University on Saturday.
The junior running back and Millville High School graduate scored on a 9-yard run to put the Orange up over Virginia Tech in the first overtime. The defense then forced a fumble, and the Orange walked away with a 38-31 victory.
Allen finished the game with 121 yards rushing and three TDs on 21 carries. He added five receptions for 37 yards.
“As you see in overtime, that’s LeQuint time,” Syracuse coach Fran Brown said. “Just give LeQuint the ball.”
“He can catch, he can play safety, he can play outside linebacker, he can play wide receiver, he can do wildcat quarterback. He can do everything. This is his passion. He does it the right way … he’s special, man. He’s a special kid,” Brown added.

Allen also scored the overtime winner Oct. 4 against UNLV. In eight games for Syracuse (6-2), the 2021 Press Player of the Year has 602 rushing yards (4.6 average) and seven TDs. He’s also caught 42 passes for 311 yards and three scores.

Fran Brown shares why he apologized to a backup linebacker who didn’t play against Virginia Tech (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse head coach Fran Brown admitted that he made a mistake on Saturday when the Orange toppled Virginia Tech in overtime.

Brown said he should have played backup linebacker James Heard, and that he apologized to the redshirt freshman afterward.

“One linebacker who didn’t get to get in the game, I told him I apologized,” Brown said on Monday during his weekly press conference, a unique admission and display of humility from a head coach. “James Heard should have played this past weekend. James Heard should have been in the game 40 to 50 percent of the game, especially with what was going on. I apologized for that. ... Mistake on us. Dude should be in the game.”

Virginia Tech rushed for 249 yards against the Orange during a game in which SU’s tackling was particularly bad. Pro Football Focus counted a season-high 24 missed tackles against the Hokies.

Heard, a West Virginia transfer, is still learning some of the finer points of playing linebacker after moving over from defensive end. But he is a physical presence and is ranked by PFF as the Orange’s highest-graded tackler this season.

Brown said that it was the type of game where Heard could have helped and that he has been performing well enough in practice that he deserved the opportunity to play.

Zeed Haynes attended Syracuse football's game Saturday. Is he back full-time? ‘He's working’ (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football wide receiver Zeed Haynes is officially back with the program after an extended absence dealing with a personal matter.

Haynes was spotted Saturday on the field in sweats and an SU beanie during warm-ups prior to the Orange’s win over Virginia Tech.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown said Monday that he knew Haynes would be in attendance — it appeared a surprise to teammates who he greeted on the field — and that the Georgia transfer has returned full-time to the team.

“He‘s working to get back in and just getting everything going,” Brown said. “Hopefully it works itself all out for him and he’ll be able to get back on the field within the next few weeks.”

Haynes first missed Syracuse’s Week 4 game against Stanford coming out of a bye. He has not been around the program since.

In his only two appearances for the Orange this season, Haynes played 111 snaps. He was targeted 15 times by quarterback Kyle McCord and caught eight passes for 97 yards.

Brown has never explained further what has kept Haynes away from the program beyond labeling it a personal or family matter.

“Just happy that he‘s coming back,” Brown said. “Thankful for him. Just happy that him and his family was able to push through all the stuff that they had to push through and get back. I was happy that he was able to go be there for his family, ’cause sometimes family needs you even though we‘ve became a family, we’re his extended family. His family was in dear need of having them all together.”

Syracuse has a deep wide receiving room this year and managed well in Haynes' absence but has lacked the consistent deep ball threat he was expected to provide due to his speed.

Fran Brown on Syracuse-Virginia Tech halftime incident involving marching band: ‘I was really pissed’ (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football coach Fran Brown had strong words about an incident that occurred at halftime during his team’s win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

During the Syracuse University marching band’s set, Hokies kicker John Love took several practice field goals while the band was on the field performing.

“I don‘t like that,” Brown said during his Monday press conference. “Those kids go to class. They practice every day. They doing all that. So when I seen that, when I heard that, I was really pissed about that. Like, don’t nobody disrespect our band and do those things.”

A four-minute video posted to Facebook shows the incident in its entirety. It elicited boos from SU fans and online commentary.

Love, a third-year kicker for Virginia Tech, shared on apology on X, formerly known as Twitter on Monday.

“I understand the work that goes into halftime performances, and it was not my intention to detract from that with my warmup,” Love wrote in part.

Love hit one 27-yard field goal and four point-after attempts in Syracuse’s 38-31 overtime win against the Hokies.

This is not the first time Brown has discussed the marching band or voiced support for it. Earlier this year, he asked and received their cooperation in establishing a new tradition, the Quad Walk, at Syracuse home games this fall.

Virginia Tech Football: Hokies Fall Out Of SP+ Top 25 After Loss To Syracuse (SI; Schafer)

The Hokies fell out of ESPN’s SP+ top twenty-five schools after suffering an away loss against Syracuse. Collin Schlee and Jeremiah Coney came through in Kyron Drones’ and Bhayshul Tuten’s absence, but Virginia Tech could not capitalize when it meant the most.

Last week, SP+ ranked Virginia Tech as the 24th overall team in the country, ahead of schools like Auburn, BYU, and Vanderbilt.

Following the Hokies loss in their ninth game, Virginia Tech was ranked as the 27th overall team, trailing Florida, Oklahoma, and Auburn.

The Hokies simply let another game slip through their fingers. After a score from Ali Jennings, Tech lead 21-3 halfway through the third quarter, as ESPN’s Analytics gave the Hokies a 95.9% chance to win. From that point on, the Hokies fell apart. Syracuse’s next drive consisted of four plays, seventy five yards and a touchdown. Virginia Tech would then proceed to go three-and-out, let up another Syracuse touchdown, turn the ball over on a fumble, then allow yet another Syracuse touchdown.

Virginia Tech then trailed 24-21, and matriculated the ball downfield for arguably the Hokies’ best drive of the day, taking a four-point lead with eleven minutes to go.

Syracuse then went three-and-out, and the Hokies had a chance to put the game away late in the fourth quarter. Facing first and ten at Syracuse’s twelve yard-line, the Hokies were completely outmanned, got drove back, and had to kick a field goal.

Needing one defensive stand to win the game, the Hokies were undisciplined on defense, and let Syracuse tie the game with just seconds left on the clock.

The same story would continue in overtime: Syracuse dominates offensively and Virginia Tech turns the ball over, game over.

Don't blame Collin Schlee for Saturday's epic collapse at Syracuse (fightinggobblers.com; Roche)

Right before kick-off at Syracuse on Saturday, it was announced that Virginia Tech starting quarterback Kyron Drones was not going to play. It was somewhat surprising, but you have to think that the Hokies knew it was highly unlikely that the Baylor transfer could not play and they game-planned for it.

In went UCLA transfer Collin Schlee and he was good. Actually, you could make the case that he was very good. He led two first-half scoring drives that ended up in the end zone and the Hokies took a 14-3 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, he led a third scoring drive that ended with a strike to Ali Jennings for a 21-3 lead.

In the end, it didn’t end up being enough as Virginia Tech’s defense imploded and allowed 28 points over the second half of the third quarter and fourth quarter before winning in overtime, 38-31, to deal the Hokies another gut-wrenching loss in 2024. There is a lot of blame to go around, but there should not be any pointed at Schlee.

Schlee did more than enough to win on Saturday afternoon. He was 16-for-24 through the air for 206 yards, while also hurting the Orange on the ground rushing for 54 yards on 19 carries. He scored a second-quarter touchdown on a keeper. He kept the Syracuse defense off balance all day long by hurting them with his arm and legs. His top target was Stephen Gosnell who had five catches for 118 yards.

He was injured in the fourth quarter on a key drive after Syracuse took a 24-21 lead. After being down, he was forced to come out of the game for one play and that one play ended up in the end zone with Pop Watson handing off to Malachi Thomas for a 15-yard touchdown run. That was the only play the Schlee would miss.

You could tell that whatever the injury was on that drive was bothering him the rest of the game as in overtime, he had a chance to run in the potential tying touchdown, but instead of going for it, he threw an incomplete pass. He later fumbled the ball after taking a big hit with the Hokies down seven to end the game. Again, not his fault.

Going into the game, if you had told Brent Pry that his team would be leading, 21-3, midway through the third quarter without Drones and running Bhayshul Tuten, he would have taken it and ran with it. Schlee protected the ball, ran the offense, and made some big throws and runs. Regardless of what happened in overtime, Schlee deserved a better result and feeling leaving the JMA Wireless Dome. Again, the finger can be pointed for why Tech is 5-4 preparing for Clemson this week, but it should not be pointed at Schlee.

How to watch College Football Playoff rankings for Clemson football fans (greenvilleonline.com; Gray)

Clemson football's CFP (and ACC title) hopes took a pretty hard hit as a result of Saturday's loss to Louisville.

How big? The Tigers may get a good idea of where their at-large chances stand when the CFP's first rankings reveal takes place on Tuesday.

Clemson now trails Miami (FL) and SMU in the ACC, and will need one of them to lose at least once to have a shot at making the ACC Championship Game.

There is now a legitimate chance that the Tigers could be a 10-2 team that does not make the ACC Championship Game. That's where the CFP rankings come in.

If the Tigers are in the teens, it likely means there's still a chance for a Clemson at-large berth at 10-2. Pitt and South Carolina could each be ranked when facing the Tigers later this month, so there will be a chance to make the current resume look a lot better. But Tuesday's rankings will give an idea of how possible that might be.

Here's what you need to know about the first CFP rankings reveal show:

Week 11 ACC football power poll: Miami, SMU separate from the pack (dailyprogress.com; Madia)

The race for a spot in the ACC championship bout became clear this past weekend.

Miami and SMU are both still unbeaten in league play after victories over Duke and Pittsburgh, respectively. The Panthers had been previously undefeated, but they could not slow down the Mustangs’ offense, which tallied 467 total yards in their 48-25 rout. Add in Clemson’s home loss to Louisville, and SMU is on the rise all the way up to No. 2 in this week’s ACC Power Poll.

This season’s voters are: Greg Madia and John Shifflett (Charlottesville Daily Progress), Damien Sordelett (Roanoke Times) and John Dell (Winston-Salem Journal).

1. Miami (9-0, 5-0 ACC; No. 1 last week): Duke had no answer for Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, who had eight catches for 146 yards and three TDs in Miami’s win over the Blue Devils. This week: at Georgia Tech, Saturday

2. SMU (8-1, 5-0 ACC; No. 4 last week): League newcomer SMU has a clear path to the ACC title game after demolishing Pittsburgh behind 161 rushing yards and two TDs from RB Brashard Smith. This week: Idle

3. Louisville (6-3, 4-2 ACC; No. 6 last week): Freshman RB Isaac Brown is one of the true breakout stars in the sport this fall. His 151 rushing yards and a TD helped Louisville upset Clemson. This week: Idle

4. Clemson (6-2, 5-1 ACC; No. 2 last week): The Tigers’ streak of victories in home night games ended at 22 this past Saturday in large part because they had no success in the downfield passing game and the defense couldn’t stop Louisville’s rushing attack. This week: at Virginia Tech, Saturday

5. Pittsburgh (7-1, 3-1 ACC; No. 3 last week): Pitt unraveled during the second quarter at SMU while being outscored 24-0 in the period. This week: vs. Virginia, Saturday

6. Syracuse (6-2, 3-2 ACC; No. 9 last week): RB LeQuint Allen rushed for 121 yards and scored three TDs in the Orange’s come-from-behind, overtime victory over Virginia Tech. This week: at Boston College, Saturday

ACC football Power Rankings entering Week 11 (usatoday; Lenix)

We’re two-thirds of the way through the 2024 season. In the ACC, several teams have established themselves as the clear favorites to make it to Charlotte for the conference title game, and others have essentially been knocked out of contention. However, there are still some big games with the ACC to close out the year.

There will be six matchups within the conference in Week 11. Two of the top contenders, Miami and Clemson, will both be on the road to take on Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, respectively, in games they should win on paper. However, they are also candidates for potential trap games, so both will need to stay on top of things.

Duke will look to end a three-game losing streak in conference play on the road at NC State. Syracuse seeks their second consecutive ACC win versus Boston College, Pittsburgh will attempt to bounce back against Virginia, and California will once again look to get their first-ever conference win when against Wake Forest.

With title game hopes still hanging in the balance, here’s where all the teams in the ACC stand in our updated Power Rankings after Week 10.

17 FSU (1-8, 1-7 ACC)

Week 10 result: 35-11 loss to North Carolina
Analysis: When it rains, it pours. Florida State has multiple losing streaks of at least three games and will finish with just one conference win on the season. Could it get any worse?

16 California (4-4, 0-4 ACC)

Week 10 result: Bye Week
Analysis: The Golden Bears have four conference games left with battles against Syracuse and SMU still to come. So, they still have a shot to get some quality ACC wins.

15 Stanford (2-7, 1-5 ACC)

Week 10 result: 59-28 loss to NC State
Analysis: The Cardinal haven’t won an ACC game since they took down Syracuse, and they took a last second field goal. It’s been a rough year for Stanford in their first season in the conference.

14 Boston College (4-4, 1-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: Bye Week
Analysis: The Eagles haven’t won a conference game since beating FSU in their season opener. With Syracuse and SMU coming up, it may be a while before they get another one.

13 Virginia (4-4, 2-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: Bye Week
Analysis: The Cavaliers hit the road to play Pittsburgh next weekend, and then they host SMU two weeks later after three consecutive losses with the conference. Needless to say, they likely won’t win another ACC game for a bit.

12 NC State (5-4, 2-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: 59-38 win over Stanford
Analysis: The Wolfpack have won two consecutive ACC contests, and their remaining games will all be winnable for them to finish with a serviceable conference record.

11 Duke (6-3, 2-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: 53-31 loss to Miami
Analysis: The Blue Devils have lost three out of the last four conference games. So, there’s just trying to break even in ACC play at this point.

10 North Carolina (5-4, 2-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: 35-11 win over FSU
Analysis: The Tar Heels have a fighters chance to finish with a winning record within the ACC after getting victories in their last two conference games.

9 Wake Forest (4-4, 2-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: Bye Week
Analysis: The Demon Deacons will look to get their first home win since September when they host California next week.

8 Georgia Tech (5-4, 3-3 ACC)

Week 10 result: Bye Week
Analysis: The Yellow Jackets have had a week off to recover from getting dominated by Virginia Tech. However, they have to play Miami this week, which makes a two game conference losing streak likely.

7 Virginia Tech (5-4, 3-2 ACC)

Week 10 result: 38-31 loss to Syracuse
Analysis: The Hookies will host a Clemson team that just lost their first ACC game of the season. So, they’ll have to bring their A game.

6 Syracuse (6-2, 3-2 ACC)

Week 10 result: 38-31 win over Virginia Tech
Analysis: The Orange have road games against Boston College and California over the next few weeks, which gives them a good chance to build a conference win streak.

Virginia Football: ACC Football Week 11 Power Rankings (SI; Baller)

With ten weeks of college football completed and the first college football playoff rankings announced this Tuesday, the final push for teams to make their case for a spot in the first-ever coveted 12-team playoff and a place in the ACC championship is in full force. Week 10 may have been the best week to learn more about the true strength of teams in the ACC.

With that said, here are our Week 11 ACC Football Power Rankings and what the college football playoff predictor says about the top team's playoff chances.

1. SMU (8-1, 5-0) - 47% Chance to make the CFP
Pony up! After an overtime win last week against Duke, SMU made sure to silence any doubters against Pittsburgh, coming away with a dominant 48-25 victory. It's safe to say the Mustangs have taken the ACC by storm this season, proving themselves to be a great addition to the Atlantic Coast Conference. If you had told me five years ago that I'd write about how SMU was the best football team in the ACC, I would've called you crazy.

Up next: Idle

2. Miami (9-0, 5-0 ACC) - 93% Chance to make the CFP
Despite an easy schedule, the Hurricanes have answered the bell every week with highlight-reel performances from Cam Ward that have powered Miami to be the number-one scoring offense in the country. What I will say about the Hurricanes is that being a Virginia sports reporter has taught me the true meaning of the phrase "Defense wins championships," and there are plenty of question marks surrounding Miami's defense.

Up next: at Georgia Tech

3. Louisville (6-3, 4-2 ACC)
Louisville's three losses this season were Notre Dame by seven, Miami by seven, and SMU by seven. The win over Clemson on the road was a massive victory for the program, cementing its status as a top team in the ACC. Led by quarterback Tyler Shough, the Cardinals offense carved up a Clemson defense that has impressed all year. Pittsburgh on November 23rd will be Louisville's next opportunity to continue to build their resume.

Up next: at Stanford

4. Clemson (6-2, 5-1 ACC)
Off the bye week, the Tigers suffered their first major blemish of the season with a home loss to Louisville. Cade Klubnik and the offense only scored seven points through the first three quarters, as the Clemson offense looked out of rhythm the entire game. With Virginia Tech, Pitt, and South Carolina coming up, the Tigers will have plenty of opportunities to redeem themselves. However, they must keep their fingers crossed and hope Miami or SMU loses an ACC game. Currently, the Tigers have zero ranked wins, dropping them three spots and putting their hopes of reaching the ACC title game and the College Football Playoff in serious jeopardy.

Up next: at Virginia Tech

5. Pittsburgh (7-1, 3-1 ACC)
The Panthers were humbled in Dallas on Saturday night, getting blown out by the Mustangs. Nonetheless, Pat Narduzzi and Eli Holstein have turned this program around; winning seven straight games is no easy feat. A successful season is still very much on the board for Pitt.

Up next: vs. Virginia

6. Syracuse (6-2, 3-2 ACC)
The sixth team to reach bowl eligibility in the ACC this season is the Syracuse Orange. After a deafening defeat to Pittsburgh last week in which Kyle McCord threw three touchdowns... to the other team, the former Ohio State QB bounced back to lead the Orange to a 38-31 overtime victory over Virginia Tech. Further, running back LeQuint Allen was stellar on Saturday night with 121 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Up next: at Boston College

TNIAAM’s ACC Football Power Rankings for November 4th (TNIAAM; Wall)

At the request of Syracuse Orange fans, we’re going to give you our ACC Football Power Rankings. Let’s get to this week’s list...

1) Miami Hurricanes (9-0, 5-0)- looked like the Canes might fall but they poured it on in the 2nd half and Cam Ward can probably book his trip to NYC for the Heisman Ceremony

2) SMU Mustangs (8-1, 5-0)- after watching their opening game against Nevada where they needed a late rally, it’s a bit surprising to see them with an inside track to Charlotte

3) Louisville Cardinals (6-3, 4-2)- last week we said “Will they play spoiler at Clemson? Jim Phillips hopes not”...well sorry Jim but they

4) Clemson Tigers (6-2, 5-1)- trap game alert as Clemson hosts Louisville, but with a trip to Blacksburg looming next week, will they be focused on the Cardinals.

5) Pittsburgh Panthers (7-1, 3-1)- as stated on the board (sorry missed who said it) “we missed the Narduzz-ing by a week”

6) Syracuse Orange (6-2, 3-2) - after what we’ve experienced, there are no apologies for beating anyone’s backup quarterback

Pigskin-Day Purchasing: The CW Makes ACC College Football Games Shoppable - Retail TouchPoints (retailtouchpoints.com; Silberstein)

The CW Network has teamed up with Shopsense AI to make its weekly broadcasts of ACC college football games shoppable. The partnership kicked off last weekend during the Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse game on Nov. 2, during which fans were able to shop game-day essentials and team merchandise directly from their mobile devices.

“By bringing shoppable TV to The CW’s ACC college football broadcasts, we’re merging the excitement of live sports with cutting-edge technology that enhances fan experiences and creates dynamic, engaging brand opportunities,” said Laura Lamattina, VP and Creative Director of Branded Entertainment at The CW Network in a statement.

The partnership will continue through the football season for ACC games, which air every Saturday on The CW as part of CW Football Saturday. The partners also said they plan to expand to other live sports, scripted series and unscripted programming across The CW Network in the future.

“Teaming with The CW to integrate real-time shopping into ACC football broadcasts is the first step in our ambitious programming partnership, giving fans the chance to support their teams in a whole new way, whether it’s purchasing fan merchandise, gear featured during the game or supplies to create a winning tailgating experience,” said Glenn Fishback, CEO and Co-founder of Shopsense AI in a statement. “We believe this initiative will deepen fan engagement and create new revenue opportunities for brands while delivering a seamless, interactive experience that taps into the spirit of college sports.”

The CW is far from the only television network trying to crack the shoppable TV nut. While Amazon has its own full-funnel ecosystem to facilitate TV-based purchases, Shopsense has become a critical partner for many media companies that don’t have in-house ecommerce capabilities. This year alone, Shopsense has partnered with Paramount, Tastemade and TelevisaUnivision for a range of new shoppable TV experiences, primarily tied to live programming such as awards shows and daytime talk shows.

A Look at the 2025 "Look-In" (RX; HM)

A Look at the 2025 "Look-In"

From 247Sports: The Coming ESPN-ACC Media Deal Look-In

What is the Grant of Rights, and why does the ACC have it?

Here are some highlights from "An explanation of what's happening in February [2025]", by Greg Barnes, along with my comments about what it means to ACC schools...

In 2016, the Atlantic Coast Conference amended its grant of rights agreement when it extended its media rights deal with ESPN upon the launch of the ACC Network. The GOR runs through June 2036... The grant of rights contract emerged in 2013 following Maryland’s departure to the Big Ten...
This is a plain statement of fact. The GoR was originally signed in 2013, then extended in 2016. The current GoR runs through 2036. Now, as every college student who has ever studied business law 101 knows, in order to have a valid contract, you must have "quid pro quo". So what did the ACC schools get in exchange for signing their rights away?

1. It provided for fiscal stability.

...the ACC implemented its grant of rights contract which effectively prevented league membership from exiting the conference through the remainder of the 2012 ESPN media agreement amendment, which ran through June 2027. That 2012 media agreement amendment guaranteed Tier 1 rights payments, which is an industry term for games of national relevance, through the 2026-27 season with a 4.5 percent expected growth rate...

2. It guaranteed content for the ACC Network

In 2016, when the ACC Network was in the planning phase, the grant of rights was amended to match the new [ACCN] media deal in length through 2036...

It's been estimated multiple times that the ACCN currently adds about $10 million per year, per ACC school, to the tv revenue bottom line.
