Welcome to Pumpkin Pie Day!

The main season for eating pumpkin pie begins with the fall harvest and ends with Christmas. During this time it is often eaten on Halloween and Thanksgiving. Pumpkin Pie Day takes place right before Thanksgiving, making it the perfect time to bake a pie to take to your holiday gathering.

Pumpkin pie consists of a pumpkin filling that is a sweet, orange to brown pumpkin-based custard, made with fresh or canned pumpkin or a packaged pumpkin pie filling. It is commonly flavored with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Packaged pumpkin filling usually already has these spices in it. Pumpkin pie shells tend to be flaky, and usually don't have a top crust.

Pumpkins are native to the Americas. They were brought back to Europe by explorers in the sixteenth century and began being cultivated there. Some of the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 may have already been familiar with pumpkins, but if not, some form of pumpkin food was served at the harvest celebration the following year, and they would have learned of them then.

SU News

Previewing SU’s matchup with UConn (DO; Stepansky)

Syracuse has already established a formidable foundation in its first season under head coach Fran Brown. In its last game against California, SU quickly took control, backed by two first-quarter interceptions by Marlowe Wax and Davien Kerr, along with the potent running of LeQuint Allen Jr.

Quarterback Kyle McCord also had another tremendous day through the air, eclipsing SU’s single-season record for completions. With another stellar performance in Week 13, McCord will likely take over as the single-season passing touchdowns and yards holder at Syracuse.

In McCord’s way is UConn. The Huskies are 7-3 to start the campaign while already facing two other Atlantic Coast Conference foes. UConn is in its third season under Jim Mora, who has seen mediocre success in his tenure thus far.

Here’s everything you need to know before Syracuse’s (7-3, 4-3 ACC) noon kickoff against UConn (7-3, Independent) Saturday:

All time series

The series is tied at 6-6.

Last time they played …

In the 12th all-time meeting on Sept. 10, 2022, Syracuse completed its fourth straight win over UConn. The Orange dismantled the Huskies, led by quarterback Garrett Shrader’s two first-quarter touchdowns. Shrader’s scores helped SU jump out to a 17-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Devontae Houston answered with a 28-yard touchdown run, but the Orange added on to lead 27-7 at halftime and never looked back. Shrader recorded 292 passing yards and five total touchdowns while Sean Tucker’s 112 rushing yards led Syracuse to a 48-14 victory. The win was the second of six straight to start SU’s 2022 campaign.

The Huskies report

With seven wins, The Huskies are bowl-eligible for the second consecutive season. UConn currently ranks 37th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 31.7 points per game. The Huskies possess an extremely even attack, passing for 2,019 yards and running for 2,003.

A unique approach has led to UConn’s offensive success as it poses multiple threats at quarterback. Joe Fagnano has 1,071 passing yards and 13 touchdowns while sophomore Nick Evers is close behind at 918 yards. The two have split time, with Evers playing 464 snaps and Fagnano in for 236.

To aid the passing game, the Huskies have three running backs with more than 500 yards on the ground. Durell Robinson, Cam Edwards and Mel Brown each have eclipsed the mark on almost 100 carries each while Evers has added 234 rushing yards.

UConn presents a strong offensive line with tackles Chase Lundt and Valentin Senn holding a 84.6 and 78.3 grade on Pro Football Focus, respectively. The Huskies’ overall run-blocking grade ranks second in the nation, per PFF.

Defensively, UConn has progressed since its season-opening 50-7 loss to Maryland, not allowing 30 or more points since. Redshirt senior Malik Dixon-Williams leads the team with three interceptions while Tui Faumuina-Brown leads in sacks at 4.5.

The Huskies are 4-2 in one-possession games, losing to Duke by five on Sept. 14 and more recently falling by three to Wake Forest on Oct. 19. UConn is also 0-3 against Power Four opponents, falling by a combined 51-point margin.

Beat writers agree Syracuse will defeat UConn for 8th win of 2024 (DO; Staff)

Following its third loss of the 2024 season, Syracuse traveled across the country for an Atlantic Coast Conference bout with California. Against the Golden Bears, the Orange stymied any sense of a slow start, jumping out to a 27-7 halftime lead.

Two first-quarter interceptions from SU’s defense and LeQuint Allen Jr.’s two touchdowns led the way. Kyle McCord’s 323 passing yards pushed the Orange across the finish line, defeating Cal 33-25.

With just two games left to play, Syracuse now faces UConn in SU’s final nonconference clash of the campaign. The Huskies enter on a three-game winning streak, though they’ve dropped all three games against Power Four opponents.

Here’s how our beat writers think Syracuse (7-3, 4-3 ACC) will fare against UConn (7-3, Independent) on Saturday:

Aiden Stepansky (6-4)
On to the ’Canes
Syracuse 41, UConn 27

Last week’s win over Cal reaffirmed my final thoughts on this Syracuse team. The Orange will finish 8-4 and have a winning record in November. Keeping with the narrative, I see SU having little trouble taking care of the Huskies.

A nonconference bout with an independent school is a good break from the Orange’s chaos-filled ACC slate. While UConn is bowl-eligible, its legitimacy has largely lacked substance to back it. The Huskies have only allowed over 30 points once, but it was a 50-point explosion against Maryland.

No offense to my fellow scribe Timmy Wilcox, or any other Marylanders out there, but the Terrapins aren’t a team anyone should be allowing 50 points to. UConn did just that in its season-opener, which gives me no reason to believe SU’s offense can’t run wild against the same unit.

I see the Orange starting fast on offense, jumping out to a quick lead and not looking back. The Huskies may claw back into the game against Syracuse’s bench, but it won’t make this one very close. An eighth win of the season is a splendid way to ride into what is, without a doubt, the biggest game of the Fran Brown era versus Miami to end the regular season.

Cooper Andrews (5-5)
Paige Bueckers doesn’t play football
Syracuse 47, UConn 20

UConn is a basketball school. Much more than Syracuse has ever been. SU’s men’s basketball program doesn’t hold a candle to the dynasty Huskies’ head coach Dan Hurley has spawned. On the other hand, SU’s women’s team has suffered many of its most heart-wrenching losses in program history to the legendary Geno Auriemma, including in the 2016 NCAA title-game and last year’s round of 32.

Luckily for the Orange, Saturday’s game is on the gridiron — a place where it holds a noticeable edge over the Huskies. And UConn’s football program doesn’t have anyone close to making a similar in-game impact à la Paige Bueckers.

Syracuse will fare similarly to how it did against Ohio and Holy Cross. UConn isn’t good. Sure, Jim Mora’s program is 7-3. But the Huskies’ schedule has been laughable. Their best win of the season came over Buffalo of the Mid-Atlantic Conference. And they’re 0-3 versus Power Four competition, with the lowlight being a 43-point blowout loss to Maryland.

Saturday is arguably UConn’s toughest game of the year. Though the Orange’s pedigree far exceeds the Huskies’. They’ll prove that and then some. I expect McCord to cruise in the first half to lead SU’s offense to at least four touchdowns. Then, a couple of Allen Jr. garbage time scores will thrust the backups in before the clock strikes triple zeroes.

Justin Girshon (4-6)
Winners get washed
Syracuse 34, UConn 24

When picking Syracuse to lose against Cal last week, I told my fellow scribes Aiden, Cooper and Zak Wolf I’d buy a winner’s get washed shirt if the Orange won. An eight-point victory and $48.06 later, SU has won four ACC wins and Fran Brown and Co. can put the added Name Image and Likeness money I’ve put in their pockets to good use.

On a serious note, the Orange’s road win over the Golden Bears was crucial. Before a likely split against UConn and Miami, the game versus Cal will likely be the difference in Syracuse finishing Brown’s first season at the helm 8-4 and 7-5.

There’s no reason to believe SU will slow down against the Huskies. While UConn has exceeded expectations this season, all of its damage has come versus non-Power Four teams. In their three games against Power Four programs, the Huskies fell 50-7 to Maryland, 26-21 versus Duke and 23-20 against Wake Forest.

Syracuse football vs. UConn predictions: See our picks (PS; Staff)

The Syracuse football team will face Connecticut at 12 p.m., Saturday in the JMA Wireless Dome (TV: ACC Network).

It’s time for our predictions. The panel includes Brent Axe, sports columnist; Chris Carlson, sports enterprise reporter; and Nate Mink, managing producer for sports.

BRENT AXE

Syracuse 34, Connecticut 21

Will Syracuse cover? Yes

I did a double take with Syracuse being such a big favorite considering how UConn gave Duke and Wake Forest trouble. With all the one-score games SU has played in and with the Huskies coming off a bye, I’ll say the offensive momentum rolls over and the defense forces a couple turnovers for the Orange as it takes care of business on Senior Day at the JMA Dome.

CHRIS CARLSON

Syracuse 38, Connecticut 17

Will Syracuse cover? Yes

UConn hasn’t seen anything like this Syracuse offense. The best unit that UConn has faced this season is Wake Forest, which ranks No. 70 in the country averaging 27.7 points per game. Syracuse is No. 36, averaging 31.8 points an outing.

The Huskies prefer to run the ball and shorten the game behind a solid offensive line and multiple options at running back. It’s possible that approach works against a run defense that hasn’t been great. I think the more likely scenario is that the Orange eventually forces UConn to throw the ball in a futile effort to keep pace.

With Kyle McCord entering the game second in the country in passing yards and so many mouths to reward among SU’s receivers with two games left in the season, I don’t see SU letting up on the gas until late.

NATE MINK

Syracuse 48, Connecticut 14

Will Syracuse cover? Yes

Hear me out: This is unequivocally the biggest Syracuse-Connecticut game since 2010, when a 7-3 Syracuse team hosted a 5-4 UConn team that would eventually play in the Fiesta Bowl.

Now, never mind the Huskies look like a Group-of-Five program that is 0-3 against mediocre Power-Four opponents with a combined 15-15 record.

Jim Mora Jr. has rescued the program, but it’s a far cry from the program built by former Syracuse assistant Randy Edsall two decades ago, when he had 15 players drafted into the NFL over the course of his 12-year tenure.

Saturday will be a coronation for Kyle McCord as he stamps his name atop the school record book for most passing yards in a season.

The senior, averaging 347.6 yards per game, is also on pace to obliterate Eric Dungey’s single-season record for most passing yards per game (297.7) set in 2016.

Point spread: Syracuse by 10.5 points

Overheard after Syracuse football practice: ‘I see a lot of my freshman and sophomore self in him’ (PS; $; Lacy Jr)

The Syracuse University football team has a chance to clinch an eighth win for the first time since 2018 when UConn heads to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday.

While the team is experiencing new success this season, the message has been clear from everyone inside the program that this is the expected outcome under first-year coach Fran Brown.

UConn heads into the game at 7-3 just like the Orange, and the team will not be taking the Huskies lightly as they try to reach the eight-win mark.

Here are some of the things Brown and the players had to say ahead of this week’s matchup.

Fran Brown

On the team being 7-3:

“I’m not actually happy with the record, to be honest. Sorry about that. I’m not happy with where we are because I feel like I failed the guys a few times.”

On Kyle McCord setting school records:

“I mean, I think that’s a good deal. I’m thankful for it. I just want to win, though, you know, I want Kyle to win. I think he’s a good player. I think he’ll have a great career after he leaves Syracuse.”

LeQuint Allen

On what would make Jeff Nixon a good head coach:

“I think his energy, whether that’s Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, game day, I think his energy is the same throughout the week and I think that’s what a head coach needs. And I think he’ll be able to do that. And I think he’s very brilliant. Like I said, he knows a lot of football, and I think I know he can do it.”

On what the biggest differences between this year’s offense and last year’s offense have been:

“I think this offense is a pro-style offense and I think it’s different slightly. I think if you know football, it isn’t really that much different. I think the wordplay with it and different formations and stuff like that, I think. But I caught on fast and I like everything about it.”

On preparation for UConn this week with it being Senior Day and the team looking to clinch a positive November record:

“We’re just trying to go into game 0-0. Focus on UConn and we just won and we’re not going to worry about that. We can’t get big-headed or anything like that.”

On where he hopes the Orange plays a bowl game:

“Anywhere, I guess. I don’t know. I don’t really look into stuff like that. I just — when it happens, I’m suited up and ready for it. But I hope it’s somewhere warm.”
...

Jackson Kennedy has stabilized SU’s previous kicking inconsistencies (DO; Stepansky)

Among the numerous issues that arose in Syracuse’s 28-point loss to Pitt on Oct. 24, the Orange missed their only field goal attempt of the game. It pushed them to 5-of-11 on the season, ranking last in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

A few days after the loss, then-third-string kicker Jackson Kennedy received texts from special teams coordinator James Vollono and head coach Fran Brown. The messages were simple. They told the redshirt junior he would get a chance that week and to prepare accordingly, which came as a surprise to Kennedy.

“If you asked me (in the beginning of the season) I’d be like, ‘I’m probably not gonna play this year,’” Kennedy said. “But it’s knowing that you never know when your opportunity will come.”

Kennedy has taken his chance and ran with it. Through three games as SU’s placekicker, the Cornell transfer has converted on all six field goal attempts — three from 40-plus yards — and is 10-of-11 on extra points. As Syracuse’s third kicker used in 2024, Kennedy’s recent success has brought much-needed stabilization to a unit that saw both Brady Denaburg and Jadyn Oh struggle to start the season.

“He saved us,” Brown said of Kennedy’s revelation.

Syracuse’s kicking position hasn’t been an issue in recent years. Andre Szmyt secured the position from 2018-22, becoming the program’s all-time points leader. Following his departure, Denaburg, a sophomore at the time, took over in 2023 and converted on 10-of-16 field goals.

Denaburg again assumed the role to start 2024, but Brown — like most positions on the roster — made it an ongoing competition. He was effective on kickoffs but struggled with accuracy on field goals, going 3-for-6 to start his junior year.

Brown kept the competition open and gave Oh an opportunity versus Holy Cross. The redshirt freshman was perfect on extra points in four games but went just 2-of-5 on field goals, missing all three attempts from 40-plus yards.

With its poor kicking game and punting issues to match, SU’s special teams unit became its weak link.

“It was pretty obvious that we were not doing well as a unit, as a group, and we knew we could do better,” Kennedy said.

While Kennedy hadn’t seen game action yet, he continuously challenged Denaburg and Oh. All three know they have the potential to be starters, and it’s a matter of translating success in practice to games.

Kennedy said during the open competition that each kicker gets three to four kicks through a given practice. If you make them, you get more kicks the next day. If you miss them, you lose reps.

According to Syracuse punter Jack Stonehouse, Kennedy kicks more than anyone on the team because of his role as the backup for punts and kickoffs. Stonehouse, the holder on all kicks, said there are only slight changes between holding for the three kickers, while the timing element is most crucial.

Of SU’s kicking trio, Kennedy is the most experienced. After not appearing in his first two seasons at Cornell due to COVID-19 and a redshirt, he made his mark. Kennedy received Second Team All-Ivy honors after finishing 7-for-11 on field goals and a perfect 25-for-25 on PATs. The next year for the Big Red, he handled punting and kicking duties, receiving Second Team All-Ivy honors for both.

While the Orange struggled to make kicks this season, Kennedy thrived in practice. Eventually, his number was called.

“It was a very competitive situation, and he just continued to chip away,” Vollono said.

Syracuse Football: Orange versus UConn how to watch, odds and prediction in week 13 (itlh; Adler)

But first things first. The Orange welcomes UConn to the Hill this Saturday afternoon, and the Huskies have proven a pleasant surprise to date in the 2024 campaign. The 'Cuse roster can't take UConn lightly and must be locked in for this non-conference affair.

Syracuse football vs. UConn odds, spread and total

When I wrote this article, FanDuel had the Orange as a 10.5-point betting favorite at home against the Huskies, with the over/under set at 54.5 points.

Syracuse football vs. UConn prediction and pick

Saturday's contest completes the Orange's non-conference calendar, as the 'Cuse looks to go 4-0 outside of ACC clashes. In their all-time series together, per SU Athletics, Syracuse football and UConn are tied at 6-6, although the Orange has won the past four encounters.

There are some special things that will transpire this Saturday. A pregame ceremony will honor the 'Cuse senior class. At halftime, former legendary Syracuse football head coach Dick MacPherson will be inducted into the SU Athletics Ring of Honor.

MacPherson, who passed away in 2017, had a 66-46-4 overall mark as the Orange's head coach. He was the national coach of the year in 1987, when the 'Cuse went 11-0-1 and was ranked No. 4 around the country.

UConn, an FBS independent in football, has wins over Merrimack, Florida Atlantic, Buffalo, Temple, Rice, Georgia State and UAB this season. On the flip side, the Huskies have lost to Maryland, Duke and Wake Forest.

Savion Washington, Coach Fran Brown, Connecticut, Miami and other cheerful Cuse football news (itlh; Fiello)

Look, I am not an X's and O's kind of fan. I am not a stat guy and can't tell you who wore what jersey number in 1997. What I know is that I like waking up on a game day and looking forward to seeing the Syracuse Orange play any sport I possibly can.

Just yesterday, I was at the volleyball facility and was wishing they had a game so I could shout "Let's Go Orange!" before going back to work. I preface this post with that because after I share a few news updates for you, I will also share something a bit more personal.

I like sharing positive and personal stories whenever possible to remind ourselves that it's not just about wins and losses or who is the greatest of all time...it's the joy of being a fan and the experiences that make being a fan pump Orange blood through our veins.

First off, congratulations to Syracuse football right tackle Savion Washington for winning the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week. Savion finished the Cal game with better blocking grades than most of my high school classes and is the second Cuse OL to win the award this year, with Da'Metrius Weatherspoon also getting the award after the Georgia Tech win.

Syracuse also announced this week that the regular season finale in the JMA Wireless Dome on November 30th will be a 3:30 pm game on ESPN. Miami is currently ranked number 11 in the country and with Cuse currently at seven wins, the Orange could be trying to get their ninth win of the season and get a higher bowl game.

But in order to get that ninth win. they will have to also beat UConn this week, which by the way is also 7-3 and has played very competitively against two other ACC teams. The Orange return to the Dome for their last two games and starting it off being favored by 10.5 points, according to my brother on the site Neil Adler, who also shared other information about the game that you can find by clicking HERE.

It's also senior day and if you get there early, you can enjoy seeing the legendary former Cuse coach Dick MacPherson being inducted into the Syracuse Ring of Honor. Coach MacPherson is a huge reason I bleed Orange and I am always supportive of his legacy being part of the future of the Syracuse football program.

Syracuse football: first down offense vs Cal (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange got off to a stronger start on the road at California and it allowed for the offense to be a bit more balanced and effective- especially in the second quarter.

One thing I noticed in doing this week’s numbers was that Syracuse made a concerted effort to get the ball in the hands of LeQuint Allen, Oronde Gadsden and Trebor Pena on first downs. On 25 of the Orange’s 35 first-down plays, those three players ran or caught the ball.

Even with settling for two first quarter field goals, putting up 27 points heading into the break without a defensive or special teams score is impressive. The offense was absolutely humming in the second quarter and Fran Brown was able to be aggressive on 4th downs (4-4 on the day)

Syracuse football scores top 8 of 4-star WR Winston Watkins, who sets decision date (itlh; Adler)

Four-star senior Winston Watkins Jr. from Florida, one of the top wide receivers in the 2025 class, has disclosed his final eight contenders, and Syracuse football made the cut.

The 5-foot-10, 172-pound Watkins recently said on his X page that he will make his commitment announcement on December 4. In that post, he also listed a top eight of the Orange, Colorado, Alabama, Penn State, Indiana, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Georgia.

By the way, the early signing period for members of the 2025 class begins on December 4 and runs through December 6, according to the Web site nationalletter.org.

Watkins has previously given verbal commitments to Texas A&M and then Colorado. Throughout his recruiting process, he has received more than 30 high-major offers. The new 'Cuse staff, led by first-year head coach Fran Brown, offered Watkins a scholarship in late December of last year.

Syracuse football 2025 four-star target Winston Watkins Jr. will soon make his college decision.

In late March of this year, Watkins went on an unofficial visit to the Orange. Per recruiting services, from late May to late June, he went on official visits to Indiana, Ole Miss and South Carolina. In recent months, the chatter among some recruiting experts is that those three suitors - Indiana, Ole Miss and South Carolina - are likely the top contenders for Watkins.

At last glance, I saw two projections in the direction of Ole Miss for Watkins between and the On3 Web site. Candidly, unless Watkins takes an official visit to Syracuse football before making his commitment announcement, I do not envision the 'Cuse prevailing, but let's see how this all pans out.

Watkins is spending his senior year at Venice High School in Venice, Fla. To date in the current 2024 season, as Venice is participating in the state playoffs in Florida, the Indians are 10-1 overall and ranked No. 19 around the country, per MaxPreps.

Also according to MaxPreps, in 2024 so far, Watkins has caught 66 passes for 817 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also has 68 rushing yards and five scores on the ground, along with 365 kickoff-return yards and 51 punt-return yards.

5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. UConn - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

The Syracuse football team hosts UConn on Saturday, in a battle of two teams with 7-3 records on the season. Here's five things to know before you head to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday:

1. Senior Day
While it won't be the final home game for the Orange seniors, that will come next week against Miami, Saturday's game will serve as Senior Day in the Dome.

Twenty five players, managers and student assistants will be honored in a pregame ceremony 25 minutes prior to kickoff (11:38 a.m.). Fans are encouraged to arrive to the Dome early to celebrate a group that includes Orange stars such as Marlowe Wax, Oronde Gadsden, Kyle McCord, Justin Barron and more.

The Orange football program moved the date to the second-to-last home game of the season this year in order to allow families of the senior players an easier travel opportunity than Thanksgiving weekend.

2. Non-Con Finale
Syracuse concludes non-conference play on Saturday. A win would secure the second-straight season the Orange were perfect in non-conference play and bring their regular-season non-conference winning streak to eight games. Prior to 2023, Syracuse had not won all-four non-conference games in any season since the program first joined a conference in 1991.

3. Coach Mac Honored at Halftime
Legendary head coach Dick MacPherson will be the latest member of the Syracuse Ring of Honor. Established in 2020, the Ring of Honor is bestowed upon individuals named as one of Syracuse University's most outstanding student-athletes or coaches to compete and/or coach their associated collegiate sport. This honor enshrines an honoree within the Syracuse University Stadium by permanently displaying an honoree's name on the inner most façade of the JMA Wireless Dome.

Coach Mac will join Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Ben Schwartzwalder, Jim Boeheim, Dave Bing and Roy Simmons Jr. in the exclusive club.

His ceremony will take place at halftime. Additionally, Syracuse University will hold a private naming ceremony earlier in the day for the Coach Mac Food Pantry and Hendricks Chapel. For more information on Coach Mac, the Ring of Honor and Food Pantry, click here: Coach Mac

4. Seeking Win 8
A win on Saturday would give Syracuse eight regular season wins for just the second time since 2001 (2018 being the other). The Orange enter the contest at 7-3 under head coach Fran Brown – the second-best 10-game record for a first-year head coach at Syracuse since WWII. Paul Pasqualoni was 8-2 at the 10-game mark of his tenure in 1991.

Dan Hoard Receives Marty Glickman Award (bengals.com; Hobson)

Bengals radio voice Dan Hoard, who leads the NFL in nuggets and nice, received the Marty Glickman Award on the campus of Syracuse University Wednesday night.

Which is a little bit like a football coach journeying to Oxford, Ohio to get something like the Paul Brown Award. If Miami University is the "Cradle of Coaches," then Syracuse is the "Crib of Calls," when it comes to the giants of sports broadcasting.

"Look at the winners," says Hoard, whose training- camp dry humor can stretch from Letterman-esque to "The Simpsons," a show on which his own character once appeared.

"(Bob) Costas. (Mike) Tirico. Ian Eagle. (Sean) McDonough. Marv Albert. It's the classic case of 'Why is this name on this list?"'

Actually, Dave Lapham, his match-made-in-heaven partner in the Bengals booth these last 14 seasons, says it's a classic case of why isn't the name on the list? If all politics is local, so is sports.

"You look at what Dan has done on a local basis and it's tremendous," says Lapham, maybe the only sports announcer alive who went to Syracuse but not its TV and radio school. "They should expand their horizons in that regard. There should be a place for people who say, 'I'm good where I am and I'm going to stay and not chase the national whatever.' That doesn't mean they're not excellent and deserving. And that's what Dan is.

"On any good team, there has to be a high level of trust. I trust Dan Hoard with my life."

So do Bengals fans, who find out every week why Hoard received The Glickman. He has combined the familiar, reliable voice of a favorite uncle with the enthusiasm of a frat party to provide easy listening for Bengaldom from the A.J. Green draft to the Joe Burrow clinic in Los Angeles last Sunday night.

Network crisp but descriptive. National smooth but eloquent.

Team that with Lapham's effusive emotion for the game and pinpoint analysis, and you get sizzling chemistry that produces bobble-heads and T-Shirts with their names and images.

Ex-Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito ready to bring ‘swag’ as NY Giants’ starter (PS; AP)

Daniel Jones was taking snaps as the New York Giants began preparations for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But this time, something was a little different.

The 27-year-old Jones would catch a football sent underhanded to him by an equipment man and either hand off to a running back or roll out to the right and throw a pass to a stationary coach.

That part was nothing new for the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He has done it for the past five-plus years with the Giants, except there was one difference on Wednesday. Jones was last in the rotation of quarterbacks behind Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock.

He was the No. 3 quarterback.

With seven games left in the season, the Giants (2-8) are DeVito’s team. After being the third quarterback all season, he is the No. 1 guy and being asked to spark the team and end their five-game losing streak.

No. 8 Miami focuses on 'alignment' in key ACC matchup vs. Wake (cbssports.com; FLM)

The eighth-ranked Miami Hurricanes are guaranteed to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference title game if they win their final two regular-season games.

They start the challenge Saturday afternoon when Miami (9-1, 5-1) hosts Wake Forest (4-6, 2-4) in an ACC matchup.

Miami is powered by senior quarterback Cam Ward, who leads the nation in passing yards (3,494) and passing touchdowns (32).

The Hurricanes are coming off a 28-23 loss at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9, and then a bye week.

Miami is 5-0 at home this season, but Wake Forest, despite its overall struggles, is 3-1 on the road.

The Hurricanes, who lead the nation in scoring with an average of 45 points per game, haven't been as good on defense (57th at 23.1 ppg), and Miami coach Mario Cristobal said this week that he knows the problem.

"When you say tackling and getting off blocks, it's about alignment," he said. "If you are not in the correct position, you eat it as a team."

Miami could get some help on Saturday from a pair of starter-level defensive players who appear likely to return from injury: cornerback Damari Brown and defensive lineman Elijah Alston.

Brown, at 6-foot-2, is a shutdown-type corner but hasn't played since Miami's opener on Aug. 31. Alston, a fifth-year senior, has 12 career sacks.

Both players have been medically cleared and are practicing. Cristobal said he expects them to play this week or next.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, has allowed 30 or more points seven times this season and is 1-6 in those games.

The Deacons also are 3-3 in games decided by one score.

It remains to be seen if Wake Forest can stop Miami wide receiver Xavier Restrepo (934 receiving yards, 10 touchdowns) or Miami's 1-2 running back punch of Damien Martinez (676 rushing yards, eight TDs) and Mark Fletcher Jr. (444s, six).

SMU, Miami and Clemson all remain in ACC title hunt | Chattanooga Times Free Press (timesfreepress.com; Odum)

There is clarity at the top of the chase for the two spots in the Atlantic Coast Conference football title game.

Even so, it is possible tiebreakers could be needed to determine which teams play for the championship on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

First-place SMU would secure its spot by beating Virginia on Saturday.

Miami and Clemson are the other contenders for spots in the championship game at Bank of America Stadium.

The real chaos could begin if No. 13 SMU, 6-0 in ACC play, loses this week's matchup with the Cavaliers, possibly leaving three teams with one conference loss.

That's why SMU coach Rhett Lashlee isn't ready to talk about his Mustangs — the 2023 American Athletic Conference champions — being one win away from a spot in the title game in their first year in the ACC.

"No, can't let ourselves go there," Lashlee said Tuesday. "You know, we've got two games left. The job's not done. We all understand what's in front of us and what opportunities we have. But, you know, if you sit around and think about that too long, you won't stay present."

No. 11 Miami, 5-1 versus ACC foes, must beat Wake Forest on Saturday to retain its hopes of playing in the league championship game if SMU beats Virginia. No. 17 Clemson has completed its conference schedule at 7-1 and could clinch a berth in the title game if Miami falls to Wake Forest.

Jim Phillips calls out College Football Playoff committee over Miami, SMU, Clemson rankings (on3.com; Schultz)

Three ACC teams appeared in the third College Football Playoff rankings during Tuesday’s reveal show. Miami led the way, followed by SMU and Clemson – but ACC commissioner Jim Phillips thought all three teams should’ve been higher.

Phillips expressed his disappointment with the CFP committee over where it ranked Miami, SMU and Clemson. He specifically pointed out the fact the Hurricanes were on a bye in Week 12, but still fell one spot while Alabama jumped up to No. 7. The Crimson Tide defeated Mercer at home.

Phillips thought Miami should be in the Top 6. The Hurricanes still came in as one of the four highest-ranked projected conference champions in the 12-team bracket, but the commissioner thought the Hurricanes warranted a higher ranking. He also noted the improvement SMU made from the start of the year after Kevin Jennings took over at quarterback, comparing its situation to Florida State a year ago.

2024 Easy Roads (RX; HM)

Just as an aside, but Syracuse did play Ohio, currently in first place in the MAC, and will play UConn, currently 7-3. Both at home. And they played and won at UNLV, a program that is in the top 25 and in the college football playoff rankings. That is one of the best wins OOC any team in the ACC has had this season. I don't think blindly looking at the number of P4 teams played is a great indicator of schedule strength.

2024 Easy Roads

People often make the assumption that a team has played a tougher schedule just because it's in the SEC or the Big Ten. However, more than ever, there are reasons to doubt that assumption!

1. Some teams took the non-conference off

Eleven ACC teams played two P4 teams out of conference (total of 10 P4 games). Only three SEC teams did that (most only play 9 P4 games), and a mere two Big Ten teams - Purdue and USC - play more than one P4 OOC game.
In fact, it's worse than that. Two SEC teams - Kentucky and South Carolina - haven't played any OOC P4 game yet (although they will play Louisville and Clemson in the regular season finale'). There are also a couple of Big Ten teams with zero P4 non-conference opponents, but this is where it gets somewhat controversial: the two B1G teams without a P4 OOC data point are Ohio State and Indiana!
Ohio State fattened their win column by playing Akron, W. Michigan, and Marshall. Indiana faced down such monsters as FIU, W. Illiniois, and Charlotte. In fact, the Hoosiers had a P4 OOC game scheduled against Louisville, but replaced it with W. Illiniois instead. For this, the CFP and AP both have these teams highly ranked?
To be fair, I have to admist that Syracuse didn't play any P4 OOC games this year, either - but they're no ranked in the Top 25 (currently).

2. Realignment has watered down some leagues

As I was researching power ratings from Sonny Moore's website, I noticed a few things. First of all, the top 10 non-SEC teams are Notre Dame, Ohio State, Indiana, Miami, Penn State, Tulane, Clemson, Oregon, SMU, and Louisville. Four Big Ten teams, but also four ACC teams, plus Notre Dame makes it 4.5! (There weren't any Big XII teams above #20 Colorado, but I'll save that discussion for another post).

ACC Makes Another Strong Showing in NCAA Graduation Success Rates

The Atlantic Coast Conference’s collective high level of academic success is again reflected by the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released on Wednesday. The ACC’s average graduation rate of 94 percent is four points higher than this year's national average of 90 percent.
“Our incredible student-athletes continue to excel in all facets, and the latest GSR report showcases the phenomenal dedication by our collective institutions to academics,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “We are proud of our student-athletes and their work in the classroom that has led to a collective NCAA GSR that greatly exceeds the national average once again. Our schools continue to prioritize the educational and athletic opportunities they provide.”

Below are the notes of interest for the ACC’s 18 member schools:

  • 17 schools have a GSR above or matching the NCAA Division I average.
  • A total of 183 ACC teams achieved perfect GSR scores of 100, led by 18 teams each from Duke and Notre Dame.
  • A combined 23 ACC teams achieved GSR scores of 100 in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball.
  • ACC football programs have the highest GSR average (88) among all FBS Conferences.

Links, News and Rumors 2024 Nov 20

From the ESPN CFP Anger Index for Week 13:

Alabama, which was ranked behind Miami last week, beat up on a hapless FCS opponent and jumped Miami during the Canes' open date. Was there a message in this?
...the message seems to be that the ACC needs to understand its place in the pecking order, and the line starts behind Alabama. Funny, because we thought the ACC already got that message last year, when Florida State was left out...
Miami went from No. 4 in the first rankings all the way to No. 8 now, thanks to a one-possession loss to a solid (and underrated) Georgia Tech team. But is that fair? Miami has four wins over SP+ top-40 teams this year -- the same number as Alabama and twice as many as Notre Dame. Miami has a better loss than either of the two teams directly in front of it: Georgia Tech is No. 55 by SP+. Vanderbilt (one of two losses for Alabama, remember) is No. 61. Northern Illinois, which beat Notre Dame in South Bend, is No. 84.
Miami's problem, of course, is it lacks a signature win. Notre Dame has Texas A&M. Alabama has Georgia. Miami has ... Florida?
So perhaps the Canes shouldn't be quite so mad at the committee here as they should be furious with Louisville. The Cardinals were the lynchpin victory for both Miami and SMU (and helped Notre Dame, too!), but bungled their way to a loss to Stanford that will be studied by future generations as a model of ineptitude...

An Oh My Darling pizza at the LaFayette Inn, the 46th stop on our CNY Pizza Tour. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

CNY Pizza Tour, stop #46: A hideaway in the middle of nowhere delivers one amazing pizza (PS; $; Miller)

The moment John Morgan knew he was onto something good came on a Sunday afternoon last spring when his roadside bar on Route 11 in LaFayette suddenly went from a dozen regulars to 70 hungry first-timers.

An accident on Interstate 81 had traffic backed up for miles. Folks traveling home after their first weekend up north were suddenly stuck. They pulled off the highway and strode into the LaFayette Inn to wait it out.

This was the day the new Bakers Pride pizza oven got its first real workout.

“I’ll never forget it,” John said. “The people came in here thinking they’d have a quick bite and never come back. But then they came up and said how much they liked the pizza. They said they were definitely coming back. And you know what? They did.”

John grew up in LaFayette, but he and his family eventually moved away. He was working construction in Connecticut at the onset of the Covid pandemic when a friend told him the old LaFayette Inn was going up for sale.

This single-family house had been transformed into a dance hall in the 1930s. It became the Bluebird Inn on the night Prohibition ended on Dec. 5, 1933. Ten years later, it was renamed the Victory Tavern because the owners at the time were hoping for an end of World War II.

It changed hands a few times over the years and later became the LaFayette Inn.

John returned to Central New York and spent six months working in the bar while living with his brother. He quickly learned the business, doing everything from slinging drinks to cooking food. He finally took it over in May 2020.

“But the one thing this place was missing, though, was pizza,” he said. “I love pizza, and we had great pizza in Connecticut. I wanted that here.”

So did Sean DesRosiers, a longtime customer at the LaFayette Inn. As much as John wanted to eat good pizza, Sean wanted to cook good pizza.

John hired Sean, and they looked into getting an industrial-quality pizza oven. The math told them they would have to sell four pizzas a day to pay for such an oven.

They’re now up to 15 a day, sometimes many more. They make traditional thin New York-style pizzas, thick Detroit-style pizzas and a six-layer cast-iron deep-dish pizza.

“We have it down to a science,” Sean said. “We’ve mastered everything, from the dough to the sauce to the timing. It used to take me eight minutes to make a pizza. Now it’s more like 90 seconds.”

OK, then. Let’s mosey up to the bar, grab a cold one and a pizza ...

Address: The LaFayette Inn, 2419 Route 11, LaFayette. (315) 677-3986

Do they deliver? Of course not. It’s a townie bar on Route 11. Stop in and grab a bottle of beer. Order a pizza and take it home. Or eat it here. You’ll be happy you did.

What I ate: A 16-inch Oh My Darlin' pizza. It’s a garlic-based pizza with mozzarella, baby spinach, sausage and bacon.

Why this pizza? This is the signature pizza at the LaFayette Inn. Sean named this pizza after his wife, Vicky. It’s the second-most popular pizza here, right behind a basic pepperoni. (I tried one of those too.)

RATINGS (out of 5)

Crust: 5/5. The dough made today will finally be put to work at the end of the week. Sean gives it a three-to-five-day cold fermentation. The dough for Thursday afternoon’s Oh My Darlin' was blended in the 20-quart heavy-duty mixer on Monday.

Sean mixes flour, yeast and Sugar in the Raw with filtered water that’s an exact 105 degrees.

“I’m very particular with this. I won’t use tap water, and I only use the raw sugar because that gives the yeast something to eat,” he said. “It makes the dough very malleable.”

An aerial shot of Syracuse Hancock International Airport's shows its two working runways and, at the top of the photo, an abandoned runway.Syracuse Regional Airport Authority

Long-abandoned runway at Syracuse airport is getting a new use, but it doesn’t include planes (PS; $; Moriarty)

A runway at Syracuse airport that was abandoned half a century ago is about to see new life -- but it doesn’t involve landings and takeoffs.

Starting in the spring, Micron Technology Inc. will began leasing about half of the old runway so it can use it as parking for construction workers building a massive semiconductor plant in nearby Clay, said Jason Terreri, director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Micron will use shuttle buses to transport construction workers from the airport to White Pine Commerce Park nine miles away in Clay, he said.

The memory chip maker announced two years ago that it has selected Clay for a semiconductor fabrication facility that will cost up to $100 billion to build and create up to 50,000 jobs directly and indirectly over 20 years.

Airport officials are making plans to expand the airport’s terminal and build a new, larger parking garage, along with other improvements, to handle an expected increase in passenger traffic generated by Micron and the associated supply-chain companies it will lure to Central New York.

The Micron project and its related development is also expected to double or triple cargo traffic at the airport.

Micron expects to begin construction next year on a 1,400-acre site currently owned by the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency at the southeast corner of Caughdenoy Road and Route 31.

Terreri said the abandoned runway will provide 1,700 to 2,000 parking spots for the construction workers.

Micron will lease the runway for five years or more. The amount of the lease will be determined by a property appraisal that has not yet been done, he said.

Micron will pay to have parking stripes painted on the runway, he said.

The runway was one of three 5,500-foot airstrips the airport had when it was built by the Army Air Force in 1942 as a staging and storage base for B-17 and B-24 bombers during World War II.

The city of Syracuse took over the bomber base in 1946 and it reopened as a commercial airport in 1949. Runway 6-24 was abandoned years later because the southern tip of the runway was on land needed for an access road from the newly constructed Interstate 81.

Upstate NY chipmaker becomes second to sign final deal with Biden administration (PS; Coin)

The Biden administration announced it has signed a final deal to provide GlobalFoundries $1.5 billion to expand a chipmaking plant in Saratoga County and update a smaller plant in Vermont.

GlobalFoundries will receive $1.375 billion to expand its plant in Malta, where it produces chips for cars, smart phones, artificial intelligence and military hardware. The expansion, which GlobalFoundries said would cost $13 billion, would create 8,000 construction jobs and 1,000 manufacturing jobs.

It’s the second major announcement in a week of a final deal from the CHIPS and Science Act, which is giving $39 billion to chipmakers to produce chips in the United States. On Friday, the $6.6 billion deal with the world’s largest chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., was announced.

Several other preliminary deals between the U.S. Department of Commerce and chipmakers have yet to be finalized, including one with Micron Technology to build up to four fabrication plants, or fabs, in the town of Clay. Micron has delayed the start of construction until at least November 2025.

Biden announced a tentative deal with Micron in April during a visit to Syracuse. Under that agreement, Micron could receive up to $4.6 billion in CHIPS Act grants and more than $11 billion in tax credits to build the first two fabs in Clay.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, in a visit to Central New York in September, said she expected the Micron deal to be signed by the end of this year.

The Biden administration is racing to get the deals done before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Trump has criticized the CHIPS Act as “so bad” and House Speaker Mike Johnson said in Syracuse Nov. 2 that Congress could repeal or make substantial changes to the law and its implementation.

Syracuse officials seek court order to take over demolition of huge crumbling warehouse (PS; $; Moss)

Syracuse officials are seeking a judge’s approval to take over the demolition of a large crumbling brick warehouse that this summer had been ordered torn down.

Bricks from the seven-story warehouse have fallen on the streets below. The building looms over Erie Boulevard West and West Street, two busy downtown streets.

An inspector hired by the city this summer said many of the building’s bricks appear to be loose. Sections of the building “may fall or collapse at any time,” he said.

Bowers Development of East Syracuse, the owner of the building, has not complied with two code enforcement orders issued in June to immediately demolish the building, city officials wrote in court papers filed Tuesday.

Bryan Bowers, the president of Bowers Development, told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard on Wednesday that two engineering firms have found the building to be “structurally sound.” He said his company has been completing “daily tasks” to facilitate demolition.

Bowers told city officials in late June that the demolition would take five to eight weeks, officials said in court papers. Asked Wednesday about when the demolition would be finished, Bowers said his company is following “specific procedures” to ensure the building is taken down safely.

“We will not be pressured by the city for their political gain,” he said.

The building has several active code violations and was deemed unsafe for occupancy on June 15, records show. Officials responded that day to calls that bricks fell into the street.

The western section of the building, near Plum Street, was demolished by the city in 2015 after part of it collapsed. That section was once home to an ice cream company, according to Post-Standard archives. City officials are still owed about $115,000 by the building owner for that demolition.

Strong storm hits Upstate NY tonight; soaking rain and wet snow expected (PS; Coin)

Update: The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of the Southern Tier for Thursday and Friday.

A strong storm system will reach parched Upstate New York tonight, bringing a widespread, soaking rain and dropping some wet snow on hilltops over the next few days.

One to three inches of precipitation -- the combination of rain and melted snow - is expected to fall through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest rain in Upstate is expected in the lower Hudson Valley, which has seen a tiny fraction of normal rainfall since summer and remains under a drought warning.

All of New York state is under a drought watch or warning. While this storm won’t wipe out the big rain deficits in the southeastern part of the state, it will make a significant dent and reduce the threat of wildfires spreading.

There won’t be much cold air with this storm, so lower elevations like the I-90 corridor are likely to see just rain. At elevations over 1,000 feet, wet snow could mix in with the rain, particularly late Thursday into Friday. The Catskills could see 6 inches or more, and most of the the Southern Tier will see less than an inch.

The storm moves in after dark tonight. Syracuse could see three-quarters of an inch of rain by sunrise Thursday, as much as has fallen all month. Rain is expected Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with up to 2 inches of rain falling by the time the storm wraps up on Sunday.
