Welcome to Good Grief Day!

"Good grief!" is a phrase often used by Charlie Brown, the main character from Charles Schulz's comic strip, Peanuts. Schulz was born on this day in 1922, and today is dedicated to both him and his enduring comic strip. Peanuts ran almost fifty years—from October 2, 1950, until February 13, 2000, which was one day after Schulz's death. Schulz created all aspects of the comic, from the script to the art and lettering. Today, reprints of Schulz's comic appear in many U.S. newspapers.

From 1947 to 1950, Charles Schulz's first comic strip, Li'l Folks, appeared in his hometown paper, the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He first used the name "Charlie Brown" in this comic, which also included a dog that looked similar to Snoopy—who would become one of the most famous characters from Peanuts. After Li'l Folks was dropped in 1950, Schulz took some of its best work to the United Feature Syndicate. They picked up his work, and decided to debut Peanuts, which was Schulz's new creation; it was similar to Li'l Folks, but differed in that it had a set cast of characters. The syndicate came up with its title, which was named after the peanut gallery from the Howdy Doody show. At its debut it began being printed in nine newspapers as a daily strip. By the time of its height in the 1960's, it was being printed in over 2,600 newspapers.

Mishael “Meesh” Powell, among college football’s finest safeties, will likely have his hands full Saturday at Syracuse in the final regular season game for the Miami Hurricanes.

The Canes hope those hands are full of Kyle McCord’s passes — and there are lots of them to navigate. The Syracuse senior quarterback is No. 1 in the nation in passing yards, with 3,946. Behind him: UM quarterback Cam Ward, with 3,774.

Powell, a 6-1, 210-pound sixth-year senior who transferred to Miami (10-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) this past spring after five seasons at University of Washington, is tied for third in the country with five interceptions and fourth nationally with 145 interception-return yards.

On Saturday, a blitzing Powell skied just a few yards away from Wake Forest quarterback Hank Bachmeier for a startling line-drive interception he returned 76 yards for a touchdown to give UM a 17-7 cushion en route to a 42-14 victory. Powell also had a sack, tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

After the pick-six, Powell danced to his left across the end zone.

“Are we going to see more big plays and if so, can you teach me how to Dougie?” a reporter asked him of his dancing.

“We got several games left to play,’’ Powell said, laughing. “And most definitely, plays will be made and I’ll make sure I show you some dance moves.’’

Said UM star Ward: “Meesh Powell had himself a day. You haven’t seen nothing yet from [jersey No.] zero. He can lock in.’’

Powell, who grew up in Seattle and played safety, cornerback and nickelback at Washington, started all 15 games last season – including in the national championship loss to Michigan – and had some of the best pass-coverage metrics in the nation, per Pro Football Focus. He allowed just 8.8 yards per catch, tied for fifth among all FBS safeties who were targeted at least 50 times. He allowed just two touchdowns, and had interceptions against Michigan State, Arizona State and Oregon in the the Pac-12 title game. His 89-yard pick-six last season came against ASU.

Axe: Motivation will not be an issue for Syracuse football’s season-ending clash with No. 8 Miami (PS; $; Axe)

There’s already plenty on the line for the Syracuse University football team in its matchup with No. 8 Miami (Fla.) at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m., ESPN).

Syracuse will be seeking its ninth-win of the season, something it has accomplished just twice (2001, 2018) since 2000.

A 9-3 regular season would mark a universal approval rating for Fran Brown’s first season as Orange head coach.

The Syracuse-Miami game also marks a showdown between the top two passers in FBS as SU’s Kyle McCord (358.7 ypg) will try to out-duel Miami’s Cam Ward (343.1 ypg).

Syracuse is also in position to throw a monkey wrench in the spokes of Miami’s bid to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship game against SMU and stay in the hunt for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

What else could the Orange possibly need to get fired up for this game?

Oh, there’s a few more logs to toss on that fire.

For starters, Miami was installed as a 10.5 favorite over Syracuse on the road.
While the Hurricanes were a lock to be favorites in this game, the diss of being double-digit underdogs at home should be something Brown can print and place in every locker of every member of the Orange.

Georgia Tech, UNLV, Virginia Tech and California were all favored over Syracuse. SU beat all four teams.

Class of 2025 defensive prospect from Florida flips commitment to Syracuse football (PS; Axe)

Syracuse football has added a defensive prospect from Florida to its stacked Class of 2025.

Deangelo Thompson (6-4, 215), a defensive end prospect from Miami, FL (Northwestern) announced that he has flipped his commitment from Florida Atlantic to Syracuse. Thompson visited Syracuse this past weekend.

Thompson is rated a 3-star prospect in the 247 Sports composite.

Thompson also received interest from FIU, Temple and Florida Atlantic among others.

“After taking my official visit I feel like this would be the best spot for me because it just feels so right in my heart,” Thompson told 247 Sports. “It’s a feeling like a home away from home. My family loves it and I love it. We’ve been through so much so we are truly thankful. I’m a kid from Miami who only left the state twice, Syracuse being my second time. So I just truly feel so blessed and very thankful.”

Fran Brown talks SU’s matchup with No. 8 Miami at weekly press conference (DO; Andrews)

All coaches prefer a certain element of secrecy. They aren’t going to give their game plan away through press conferences leading up to a matchup. For SU head coach Fran Brown Monday, this rang true. He wasn’t thrilled about questions regarding his players’ health status.

“What if I don’t want to tell the people who’s playing and who’s not?” Brown quipped. “To get those questions early on, it kind of sucks.”

Nevertheless, Brown still bluntly delivered injury updates. Wide receiver Trebor Peña, safety Alijah Clark, cornerback Jayden Bellamy and center J’Onre Reed were all deemed “fine” by Brown, while receiver Umari Hatcher was ruled out for Saturday’s game against No. 8 Miami.

Ahead of arguably Syracuse’s biggest game of the Brown era to date, the desire to keep things in-house is justifiable. The Orange take on the No. 1 offense in the country in the Hurricanes, who are led by quarterback and likely Heisman finalist Cam Ward. An upset victory would clinch SU’s third nine-win season of the millennium.

Here are some takeaways from Brown’s weekly press conference as Syracuse (8-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) prepares to host No. 8 Miami (10-1, 6-1 ACC):

‘Best decision I’ve ever made’

After breaking Syracuse’s single-season passing yards record, quarterback Kyle McCord said coming to SU was the “best decision” he’s ever made. McCord has become the focal point of the Orange’s program since he transferred from Ohio State on Dec. 17, 2023, and he’s followed through on his expectations. He currently leads the country with 3,946 passing yards, revolutionizing Syracuse into a highly potent air-raid offense.

On Monday, Brown echoed McCord’s emotional comments.

“I think we’ve both made the best decisions of our lives outside of me being married and having children,” Brown said.

Fran Brown provides injury update on 5 players ahead of clash with Miami (PS; $; Lacy Jr)

Fran Brown said two Syracuse football players who weren’t dressed last week and two who suffered injuries during the UConn game will be available to play when No. 8 Miami comes to town on Saturday.

Defensive backs Jayden Bellamy and Alijah Clark did not dress for Saturday’s 31-24 win vs. Connecticut, but Brown said Bellamy will play and Clark “should be fine,” after returning to practice on Monday.

Wide receiver Trebor Pena left Saturday’s game with an injury, and Brown also said he should be fine.

Starting center J‘Onre Reed exited Saturday’s game as well but returned, and Brown said he also should play this weekend.

Brown ruled out wide receiver Umari Hatcher for Saturday’s game.

The redshirt junior was injured on UConn’s onside kick attempt with less than two minutes remaining in the game and had to be helped off the field. He caught one catch for 9 yards prior to his exit on Saturday.

Hatcher is sixth on the team in receiving with 273 yards to go along with three touchdowns.

Syracuse football coach Fran Brown wonders why his team isn’t ranked: ‘I don’t know what it takes’ (PS; Lacy Jr)
The Syracuse football team will have one of its biggest home games in a while when No. 8 Miami comes to Central New York this weekend.

At his press conference on Monday, Fran Brown expressed his excitement about hosting the Hurricanes but didn’t harp on the rankings aspect of the game.

Brown said he doesn’t give much weight to rankings because he still has questions about them and is curious about how some teams are ranked with Syracuse being left out of the national polls.

“I don’t really look at like where they’re ranked at, stuff like that because I’ve seen a lot of 8-3 teams in the country, we’re not ranked,” Brown said. “So I just go through all these guys' ranks. I don’t know what it takes to be ranked anymore. So I don’t really kind of pay attention to that because I know I’ve seen a few teams that lost to some teams that lost to teams we beat. So I was wondering how would they still be ranked. So I don’t really understand the ranking anymore.”

Syracuse football: the many implications of the Orange’s regular season finale versus Miami (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
Heading into this Thanksgiving week, fans of Syracuse Orange will have plenty to be thankful for — a strong start to the Fran Brown era, the production from Kyle McCord, the program’s most second-most wins since joining the ACC, the chance to participate in a quality bowl game, etc.

Above all that and more, nothing will be more rewarding that the Orange having a chance to completely cause havoc to the College Football Playoff and getting yet another chance to make a statement of a performance on national television.

This Saturday, Syracuse’s 2024 season will conclude at home versus the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes. That contest kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN, one of the few games where bids to the conference championship game are on the line and where a lot can change for the two teams involved.

This cannot be mentioned enough: Syracuse has absolutely nothing to lose here, but it certainly has everything to gain. And wow, could a win do plenty for coach Brown and the Orange.

The Syracuse versus Miami game carries legit significance for how the inaugural 12-team College Football Football Playoff could play out. A win for Miami should send the Hurricanes to the ACC Championship game. However, a loss would send the now-No. 12 Clemson Tigers to the conference title game versus the No. 9 SMU Mustangs, who have already clinched their spot no matter what happens this weekend.

Talk about a situation... Syracuse having the chance to hand Dabo Swinney and Clemson yet another berth to the ACC title game. But if Syracuse doesn’t pull of the miracle, Miami gets to its very last step needed to revive itself and inch closer to the postseason.

Purely within that context, Saturday’s game will have direct implications no matter what happens: how many ACC teams end up squeezing their way in the CFP, who makes the conference championship and which teams’ fanbases will get the short end of the stick this season. Take a step back and it’s easy to see there is still plenty more at stake for both teams.

The Syracuse-Miami matchup comes at an interesting point for both programs.

Starting off with the Orange, the team is in the first steps of a new era in what’s been a pretty up-and-down century, with some promising seasons largely overshadowed by plenty of bad years, inconsistency across the board and an oftentimes sense of anguish. Syracuse fans long for the days of how good the program was in the eighties and nineties.

Well, it’s a very similar story for Syracuse’s opponent this Saturday. A long-time program didn’t really make too much noise in the college football universe until Howard Schnellenberger and later Jimmy Johnson took over in the 1980s. Miami turned into a consistent national championship contender, a cultural icon and a common team everybody despised. Hell, ESPN made not one, but two different 30 for 30 episodes.

Everything Mario Cristobal said ahead of an important matchup against Syracuse (247sports.com; Urrutia)

Miami will have its biggest game of the season this coming Saturday with a trip up to Syracuse to play the Orange with a chance to clinch a spot in the ACC title game against SMU.

On Monday, Mario Cristobal met with the media to discuss the upcoming opponent and other facets of his program.

Here is everything that he said:

Opening Statement…

"Full speed ahead on preparation for Syracuse and our opportunity this weekend coming off a solid performance against Wake Forest, where we felt that we took some really good steps from a defensive standpoint, running the football amongst other things, and putting together a really strong second half, primarily in the fourth quarter. And we're on it. We're on to the next one right now, looking forward to playing a really good football team that's one of the top offenses in the country. I don't think their defense gets enough credit, their top three in our conference, from a past defense standpoint. I don't think their running back gets enough credit, and that their coach has done a really good job. Coach Brown has put together really good staff and put together some really good players and developing that roster."

On Syracuse's offense…

"Running back is really good player. I mean, he's a lot like what we faced this last week. He's bigger, he's strong, just a one-cut, make and miss and go guys. He does not go down easily. He's complimented by a very big offensive line–really physical. I know that we're just studying the interior right before coming in. They get some good knockback, some good push the line of scrimmage, and they get the ball out and space the ball. He's in the screen game really well, you know. And obviously they use number 19, we know him, right? Local guy that's got a great history of playing high school football down here, family history as well. But they use Gadsen in so many different ways, 11 personnel and 12 personnel. But he's got great players. This guy, two is a great player. 82 is a great player. 7. 5. I could go on and on and on. So all in all, they their success isn't by accident. They're very efficient. They are a team that plays really hard and in the dome, I believe they're five and one. So I defend home territory, home turf, really well. So really good football team."

On playing in a dome this week…

"We split time inside and outside. Just like being on the grass. I mean, there's something like playing and practicing on grass. It's just always it's better on the body, but we'll use it, you know, and certainly it'll be loud and expecting just a great college football atmosphere. So all the amenities that we use to prepare for those away trips, for those for those road games that have that type of an environment, we'll use it in the IPF, but we also have ways to do it outside."

On if there any other games they have played that could help them prep for Syracuse…

"Well, there's always some type of carryover. They're just different. They're different because of the personnel they have and the way they use them. I mean, they lead the country and contest the catches it. In fact, three of the four wide receivers are the top three contested catch receivers in the country. So it's not just play design, it's really good players going up and high pointing the ball and making tough catches with just great body control. But they'll get in loaded sets as well. They can get big in a hurry and get, you know, 12 personnel in there and a third tight end as well on get downhill in the running game behind some of their big offensive linemen. And they play complimentary football really well. They show them the ability to really flip the field with their punter. But also change the complexion of the game with their return game. They've got some really good returners. They use their better athletes on all the return and all the specialty units as well. So, just so again, really good football team."

Syracuse football: Grading the Orange versus UConn (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

In their first home game since the beginning of November, the Syracuse Orange (8-3) relied primarily on a strong day from the offense to come away with a one score victory at home over the UConn Huskies (7-4).

Kyle McCord’s career day proved to be the story of the game as Syracuse took an early lead and managed to stay out in front even as UConn stayed within an arm’s distance from making a comeback. There were polarizing performances on both sides of the ball, but the result is the Orange getting to eight wins — the first time the program has done so since 2018.

How did the Orange’s different position groups perform? As per usual, here are your weekly grades for Syracuse after its 31-24 win over UConn:

Quarterbacks: A+

After rewatching the game, I could only count two “interceptable” balls, one of which could have arguably been picked. With that said, it’s hard to not hand out the A+ here: with the running game being ineffective and the defense giving up yardage, Syracuse needed its quarterback to be consistent and the passing game to be on point. The result was Kyle McCord throwing for a career-high 470 passing yards, going 37/47 (79%) from the field with an average of 10 yards per throw and two touchdowns. Not much else to say outside of Syracuse’s passing offense has been a constant all year and really shined on Saturday.

Running Backs: B-

Tough all-around to really have a definitive grade for the running backs. LeQuint Allen (20 carries for 58 yards, 2.9 YPC, five catches for 30 yards) was largely held in check on the ground but still had his impactful moments. Oronde Gadsden, Darrell Gill, Dan Villari and Yasin Willis each had a carry, but Syracuse had just 33 carries for 68 yards combined. The passing game was also Syracuse’s bread and butter pretty much all game. All that said, B- feels the most fair. It all depends how you grade out the totality of Allen’s performance, which is why I’m at least keeping it in B range.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/amid...ball-is-recruiting-florida-hard-shining-there (itlh; Adler)

As a school entrenched in the Northeast, Syracuse football is always going to put a recruiting emphasis on New York state, New Jersey, the Philadelphia market, and the Washington, D.C., to Baltimore corridor, among other geographic areas in relative proximity to Central New York.

However, since first-year head coach Fran Brown officially took over the Orange in early December of last year, he and his top-flight staff have recruited other states around the country hard, including Florida, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and Tennessee, among others.

Over the weekend, the 'Cuse landed a verbal pledge from the west coast, as 2026 three-star athlete/cornerback Jaxson Gates of Damien High School in La Verne, Calif., gave a verbal commitment to Syracuse football after visiting the program.

To me, the 'Cuse continuing to effectively recruit in the Northeast region will prove vital to the team's long-term success. But as Brown and his assistants aim to increase the Orange's awareness on a more national scale, winning on the recruiting trail in some of those other states I mentioned is critical as well.

Undeniably, the team's recruiting success in Florida, for one, has proven stellar, and Syracuse football just picked up another pledge from the Sunshine State.

https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/sports/2024/11/25/syracuse-miami-football-preview (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff & AP)

Syracuse football may not be an AP Top 25 team this week, but the Orange can still play spoiler and make their case to return to the rankings with a win over Miami.

Miami (10-1), which travels to the Dome for a Saturday matchup with Syracuse, is back up to No. 8 in the AP Top 25, having dropped out of the Top 10 two weekends ago after a loss to Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes need only beat the Orange to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against No. 9 SMU; should Syracuse win at home Saturday, though, Clemson will reach the ACC title game and not the Hurricanes.

With a 31-24 home win over UConn this weekend, the Orange improved to 8-3 for their first eight-win regular season since 2018, and third since 2000. Quarterback Kyle McCord, who broke Syracuse’s all-time record for single-season passing yards with 4:12 remaining in the first half against Connecticut, faces off against Miami’s Cameron Ward in Syracuse’s final game of the regular season. They are the two leading passers in FBS and sit atop the ACC in total offense.

The Orange spread the ball around in the win: Eight receivers caught passes, with three recording more than 100 yards each. Wide receivers Darrell Gill Jr. (177 yards) and Jackson Meeks (110) and tight end Oronde Gadsden (103 and a touchdown) combined for 390 receiving yards.

https://bvmsports.com/2024/11/26/sy...l-franklin-leads-in-tackles-cisco-breaks-out/ (bmvsports.com)
Syracuse alumni are making waves in the NFL, particularly Zaire Franklin, who is excelling in his seventh season. Currently leading the league with 123 combined tackles, Franklin's defensive impact is notable as the Colts fight for a playoff spot. Other former players, like Andre Cisco and Matthew Bergeron, are also achieving personal bests, adjusting their roles effectively amid team dynamics. While players like Garrett Williams and Sean Tucker seek to solidify their standings, Tommy DeVito faces competition to secure a starting position. Evaluating their performances, the story highlights both individual achievements and team statuses as Week 12 concludes.

By the Numbers

  • Zaire Franklin has 123 combined tackles (64 solo) this season.
  • Andre Cisco has recorded 51 total tackles (33 solo) this year.
  • Matthew Bergeron has allowed only 2 sacks in 2023.
  • Garrett Williams has 37 total tackles, allowing a 51.2% completion percentage against him.
  • Sean Tucker rushed for 136 yards on 14 carries (9.7 YPC) in Week 6.
Yes, But
Despite individual successes, team performances present challenges, particularly for the Jaguars (2-9) and the Colts (5-7). Cisco's future as a free agent raises questions, while Tucker’s limited role in a crowded backfield could hinder his development.

State of Play

  • The Colts are second in the AFC South with playoff hopes, reliant on Franklin's performance.
  • The Falcons lead the NFC South, with Bergeron providing critical support in their offensive line.
  • The Jaguars are struggling, putting Coach Pederson's future at risk amid Cisco's impending free agency.
What's Next
Players like Franklin and Cisco may seek significant contract negotiations given their performances. Meanwhile, teams like the Colts and Falcons will aim to strengthen their playoff positions, while others like the Jaguars face potential roster changes. For Tucker and DeVito, improved performances could secure their futures with their respective teams.

Bottom Line
The continued dominance of Syracuse alumni in the NFL showcases their individual talent, but the indices of team success and roster implications create an unpredictable landscape for many. Maintaining performance levels will be crucial as these players navigate the rest of the season and their career trajectories.

ACC News

For Florida State, the 2024 season has been one for the wrong kind of record books—a campaign filled with disappointment and one their fans are eager to forget. Unfortunately, the memories of this season won’t fade easily, as it’s poised to leave an massive blemish on the program’s history.

The Seminoles entered the year as the reigning ACC champions and a favorite to repeat (and finally make the College Football Playoff). Ranked No. 10 in the preseason polls, expectations were sky-high. However, things unraveled from the very start. FSU opened the season with a shocking loss to Georgia Tech in Week Zero, played in Ireland. From there, the season spiraled out of control.

After back-to-back losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College, the Seminoles finally notched a win against ACC newcomer Cal, though the narrow 14-9 victory at home hardly inspired confidence. What followed was a brutal six-game losing streak, with several of those defeats being blowouts. As the season nears its conclusion, the Seminoles are staring down a potential 3-9 finish, depending on the outcome of their Week 14 rivalry game against Florida.

What makes this season historically bad for Florida State isn’t just the disappointing record—it’s the context surrounding it. In a year of significant conference realignment, the Seminoles are set to make unwanted history as the first team to finish dead last in the newly expanded 17-team ACC. With Stanford also enduring a rough year at 3-8 overall, the Cardinal seemed poised to contend for the worst conference finish. However, with no additional ACC games on their schedule, Stanford avoided further damage. Meanwhile, Florida State’s 1-7 ACC record cemented their position at the very bottom, marking a shocking fall from preseason favorites to the league’s cellar dwellers.

With just one week left in the regular season, one spot is still up for grabs in the ACC Championship Game.

League newcomer SMU did the previously unthinkable this past weekend, officially clinching a spot in the title game. As for who will meet the Mustangs in Charlotte, it's now officially down to Clemson vs. Miami.

Can the Canes take care of business against Syracuse and punch their ticket? Or do the Orange have chaos in store? Also, how will various other members of the ACC close out the regular season?

Where do things currently stand in the conference following 13 weeks of football? Check out our week 14 ACC power rankings below:

1. SMU Mustangs

  • Record: 10-1, 7-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 1
  • Week 13 Result: W, 33-7 at Virginia
I can't help but wonder how high SMU would be ranked if Kevin Jennings was the day one starter. The Mustangs have been otherworldly since making the change at quarterback, and have a great chance to win the ACC in their first year in the league. Truly a remarkable job by freshly-extended Rhett Lashlee.

2. Miami Hurricanes

  • Record:10-1, 6-1 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 2
  • Week 13 Result: W, 42-14 vs. Wake Forest
For a second, I thought Miami had a Mario Cristobal special in store for the second half against Wake Forest. But credit to the Canes: that porous defense took care of business after halftime and their offense finally woke up in the fourth quarter. Now, Miami is just one win away from getting to the title game.

3. Clemson Tigers

  • Record: 9-2, 7-1 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 3
  • Week 13 Result: W, 51-14 vs. The Citadel
SEC teams aren't the only ones who schedule cupcakes in the penultimate game of the regular season. Jokes aside, if Clemson is able to back door their way into the ACC Championship Game, don't count out Dabo Swinney. Even though his Tigers haven't looked super crisp in the last three ACC games.

4. Louisville Cardinals

  • Record: 7-4, 5-3 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 5
  • Week 13 Result: W, 37-9 vs. Pitt
Where the hell was this team against Stanford? Louisville went from losing to one of the worst power conference teams in football to steamrolling a Pitt squad that isn't far removed from being in the ACC title game discussion. "What Could Have Been" will be the theme of the season for the Cardinals.

5. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

  • Record: 7-4, 5-3 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 4
  • Week 13 Result: W, 30-29 vs. NC State
This game was part of what makes college football great. The backup quarterback (in this case Aaron Philo) coming off the bench and leading a game-winning drive in the final seconds. Between this, the Miami upset the week before and their recent recruiting prowess, Brent Key has the Yellow Jackets on a roll.

6. Syracuse Orange

  • Record: 8-3, 4-3 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 6
  • Week 13 Result: W, 31-24 vs. UConn
It seems that Syracuse loves to only play in close games, at least that's how it seemed over the last month. Regardless, the prolific offense has carried them to their best season since 2018. Could the Orange pull a stunner and upset Miami this weekend with how up-and-down the Canes' defense has been?

I don’t even know why I bother with this anymore, but let’s humor ourselves for a bit. Here’s my kneejerk reaction power rankings with about a single minute of thought put into it.

1. SMU (last week: 33-7 W @ Virginia)

SMU slowly pulled away from Virginia, but this game was never really in doubt. The total yards in this one slanted 434 to 173 in SMU’s favor. The Mustangs clinched a spot in the ACC title game and are just a home win against Cal away from going undefeated in their first ever foray through the ACC. Impressive stuff.

2. Miami (last week: 42-14 W vs Wake Forest)

As they’ve done for much of the season, the Hurricanes struggled to put away an inferior opponent. Although at this point with so many close games, maybe these opponents aren’t as much inferior as they are on par with Miami. Either way, it took until the latter half of the game’s final quarter for Miami to pull away from a bad Wake team. If the Canes can top Syracuse on the road this weekend - not an easy feat - then they’ll face off with SMU in the ACC title game. Slip up, and in will slide...

3. Clemson (last week: 51-14 W vs The Citadel)

Predictable results from a lopsided matchup. Clemson racked up 562 yards of offense. The surprising aspect of this game was that The Citadel put up 387 yards of their own. Clemson still has an outside shot at the CFP if they can take down South Carolina at home this weekend. Finish 10-2 with a win over a surging SEC team and you have yourself a pretty good shot.

4. Louisville (last week: 37-9 W vs Pittsburgh)

Heck of a bounce-back effort from the Cardinals after losing in laughingly funny fashion last week. Louisville thoroughly handled Pitt, leading 27-0 at half and not allowing the Panthers to scratch the scoreboard until late in the 3rd quarter when the game was already well over. The Cards finish ACC play at 5-3 and will now look for their third straight season of 8+ wins when they take on rival Kentucky in Lexington this weekend.

5. Duke (last week: 31-28 W vs Virginia Tech)

If you forgot that the Duke-VT game was happening last weekend, you’re probably not alone. You also missed a really fun game out of the gate. The two teams combined for three scoring plays of 65-plus yards in the first quarter. Things got more traditional from there, with Duke moving to a 14-point lead heading into the 4th quarter and then holding on late. Contrary to their season M.O., the Blue Devils won despite losing the turnover battle (-2 for the game). WR Eli Pancol had a monster game with 188 yards receiving and 3 TDs on just 5 receptions. With Wake up this week and a likely decent bowl matchup afterwards, there’s a chance for a 10-win campaign in Manny Diaz’s inaugural run in Durham. If they manage to do so, it would be just the second such season in school history, with the other being the 2013 season under David Cutcliffe.

6. Boston College (last week: 41-21 W vs North Carolina)

Maybe Thomas Castellanos really was the issue. Since his demotion from the starting gig - and subsequent quitting of the team - BC had SMU on the ropes and then thoroughly dismantled the Tar Heels. Don’t let the late window dressing fool you; this was a 41-7 game until under 2:30 to play when the Eagles completely took their foot off the pedal and allowed this one to coast to the finish line. BC tallied 7 sacks in the game while producing three turnovers (all picks), including a pick-six. Now bowl eligible, they’ll finish off the regular season at home with Pitt this weekend.

7. Syracuse (last week: 31-24 W vs UConn)

Three different receivers topped 100 yards in the game for Cuse as Kyle McCord threw for 470 yards and Syracuse hit 8 wins in a season for the first time since their 10-win 2018 season. They could theoretically hit 10 wins this year, but it’ll take an upset over Miami and a bowl win to do so. If McCord - who will go over 4,000 yards on the season in his next game - plays as well as he did against UConn, the chance for that upset of the Canes increases significantly. Cuse is 6-2 in one-possession games this year; I feel I should point that out.

2024 TV Slots, ACC vs Big XII

FamilyOTAFamilyCable1Cable2Stream
ABC2ESPN33122ESPN+
Fox24FS118
XII totals2651 + 1 = 5222100

ANALYSIS

The Big XII had more broadcast/OTA games than the ACC, thanks to their contract with Fox. The ACC did have two more ABC games, but most of its OTA coverage was on The CW network.
Even though the ACC lacks a contract with FS1, like the Big XII, it more than makes up for that with its ACC Network games. The ACC also had significantly more ESPN/2 games than the Big XII. Each conference had one game on ESPNU.
Subscription-based (paid) streaming was a bigger deal for the Big XII (22 games on ESPN+) than for the ACC (14 games on ACCNx).

BOTTOM LINE

As soon as possible, the ACC needs to carve out a larger portion of its games and sell them to someone other than Disney (such as The CW). The current 13 games per season is nice, but I'd like to see that number doubled if possible. If The CW doesn't want that many games, I wouldn't mind having a third broadcast partner, like the Big Ten has.

Week 13 Playoff Projection

Two-bid ACC... SMU clinched a spot in the league championship game by blowing out Virginia 33-7. The committee likely will keep Miami ranked ahead of the Mustangs after the Canes’ 42-14 win against Wake Forest (a ranking I still disagree with). Miami will play for the championship if it beats Syracuse next week. If it loses, Clemson will play SMU for the conference title. The ACC has a more realistic chance for two Playoff teams as it can consider itself a beneficiary of the SEC’s madness.
SEC: Every SEC team besides Texas, Georgia and Tennessee has at least three losses, and it’s hard to justify a Playoff bid for any of those, which means the SEC may be down to three representatives in the Playoff field...
Group of 5: Boise State held off Wyoming 17-13 as Ashton Jeanty became the first 2,000-yard rusher in the FBS since 2019. The Broncos secured a spot in the Mountain West title game with the win and should remain in position to earn a first-round bye with the Big 12 looking just as inconsistent now as it did last week...

_____
From the "Until Saturday" email/newsletter of 2024 Nov 24:

Special teams... before Miami ran away with a 42-12 win against Wake Forest, Demond Claiborne returned a punt for 100 yards and a Demon Deacons score.

Syracuse University alumnus Mike Tirico won’t let a little thing like a serious injury stop him from continuing his broadcasting streak.

Tirico called NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” broadcast between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams despite rupturing his left Achilles tendon last Monday. During the third quarter of the NFL game, Tirico could be seen with his left foot in a boot, resting his leg on a box.

“Tore my Achilles. I’m okay,” Tirico told viewers. “Gonna keep going, make it through the season.”

According to the Associated Press, Tirico has never missed an assignment in his career, though such an injury would prevent most athletes from suiting up at all. Tirico told the AP it happened after he missed a step while walking at his house in Michigan.

“Once you tear your Achilles it is pain right away and then it is awkward getting around for awhile. Our group was amazing trying to set up the booth so it was as comfortable as possible,” Tirico said.
