Welcome to Ice Cream Day!

Ice cream is made with ingredients such as eggs, cream, vanilla, milk, and sugar. The forerunners of ice cream were flavored snow and ice. Marco Polo later brought a recipe that resembled sherbet back to Italy, which developed into ice cream there sometime during the sixteenth century. In England and France, royalty were the first to eat foods similar to ice cream. "Cream Ice" was eaten by Charles I of England in the seventeenth century, and Catherine de Medici of Italy introduced a similar frozen treat to France in the mid-sixteenth century, after she married French King Henry II. The general public began eating ice cream around 1660.

Keeping Up With The 315 12-12-24 (ESPN; radio; The 315)

Brian starts the show off previewing the Holiday Bowl, gives away tickets to some fans, takes a look at Portal Watch: Day 4, and more!

(youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football is in the quarterback transfer portal market, and Fran Brown's squad is set to get a visit next week with former Virginia Cavaliers signal-caller Anthony Colandrea. Colandrea has two years of eligibility left and also has earlier visits to Ole Miss and Pitt. Liberty's Kaidon Salter should remain the top quarterback target in the transfer portal. Conner Weigman committed to Houston so he's off the board. Colandrea and Rickie Collins are less desirable options.

Jackson Holzer breaks down the quarterbacks being linked to Syracuse on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Fran Brown will face traditional ‘Eggnog dump’ at Holiday Bowl if Syracuse beats Washington State (PS; Carlson)
Winners get washed. And thank goodness for that.

If the Syracuse football team beats Washington State at this year’s Holiday Bowl, the Orange celebration will include Orange head coach Fran Brown getting a bucket of Eggnog dumped on his head.

The Holiday Bowl tradition enters its second season this year. It builds on the popularity of the mayonnaise bath that began in 2021 at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

The two paste-colored pours are one of the, err, rewards for the winning team in two of the ACC’s traditional bowl games.

Southern California’s Lincoln Riley was the recipient of the Eggnog dump last year following a 42-28 win over Louisville.

5 Transfer Portal Landing Spots for Preston Stone Include Syracuse, Maryland (CFN; Fragona)
After four years with the SMU Mustangs, quarterback Preston Stone has entered the transfer portal. Where will he spend his final collegiate season?

College Football Network’s Transfer Portal Tracker follows along with all the movement from the transfer portal, including portal entrants, commitments, decommitments, and more, from all your favorite schools.

Where Will Preston Stone Transfer?

Stone has reportedly already heard from 15+ schools since entering the portal on Dec. 10. He went 13-3 as SMU’s starter, throwing 35 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in his career.

Coming off a season-ending injury, Stone struggled to open the 2024 season, resulting in his benching in favor of Kevin Jenning three games into the year.

Despite the situation, Stone remained loyal to the program, did all he could as a backup to help power the Mustangs to a College Football Playoff berth, and announced he would remain with SMU through the postseason run.

“It’s a little bit tough,” Stone said. “But I’ve had great conversations with (quarterbacks coach) D’Eriq (King) and Coach (Rhett) Lashlee way before I ever entered the portal and tried to do things the right way as it pertains to my teammates and coaches. I’m wanting to make sure I can finish the season with the team and still prepare for Penn State if and when an opportunity comes for me to play.”

However, where will the talented QB end up in 2025?

Syracuse Orange

Say what you will about Kyle McCord, but he helped lead the Syracuse Orange to a 9-3 record — just their second 9+ season since 2002.

Now that he is out of eligibility, barring an unlikely waiver, the Orange will turn to a new starter in 2025. The only issue is that Carlos Del-Rio Wilson and Braden Davis entered the portal, leaving a hole at the position.

Stone has said he loves to throw the ball, and “Whichever school I end up at, hopefully, we can have a great passing attack and have a great offense.” Well, Syracuse threw the ball at a 61.43% clip in 2024, good for the third-highest in the nation.

Additionally, Stone is familiar with OC Jeff Nixon, who recruited him while with the Baylor Bears.

Syracuse football transfer tracker: See updated list of player departures, new arrivals (PS; Mink)

The December transfer window is in full swing.

Players seeking higher pay and benefits, more playing time or a new environment can hit the transfer market until Dec. 28.

Syracuse brought in one of the nation’s highest-ranked transfer hauls last year under Fran Brown, with several college transfers playing huge roles during the team’s 9-3 season.

Brown and his staff have leaned heavily into the high school ranks this year, signing the largest high school recruiting class in the country for the 2025 cycle.

Still, the transfer churn isn’t expected to be quiet. Players are opting to leave the team. The coaches are hosting transfers on recruiting visits.

Silly season is here, and it can be dizzying trying to keep track of it all.

Bookmark this page and use it as a quick reference sheet on who’s coming and going throughout the December transfer window.

The ACC Is Winning It's War With Florida State! (youtube; podcast; The Monty Show)

The Monty Show is talking about revelations from Florida State that it no longer wants to leave the ACC Conference, and that Florida State never wanted to leave the ACC Conference. When just 18 months ago, Florida State filed a formal notice of withdrawal from the ACC Conference. Why the flip? Is the ACC winning the battle against Florida State?

How does Bill Belichick’s UNC football hire shake up the ACC? (youtube; podcast; 99.9 The Fan)

Tim Donnelly & Graham Hill discuss the seismic ripple effects of UNC football’s stunning hire of Bill Belichick as head football in the rest of the ACC. How will this bold move change the conference and put pressure on other programs and coaches?

Bill Belichick's plan for UNC football isn't only reason Tar Heels could be formidable (usatoday.com; Toppmeyer)

Bill Belichick says we shouldn’t believe a media report that he wooed North Carolina with a 400-page plan for success.

“I have no idea where that came from. I don’t have a 400-page document,” Belichick said Thursday at his introductory news conference. “And, to think, I was just gonna hand it (over)? I mean, c’mon."

Exhale, Tar Heels fans. This should be a relief. I’m leery of anyone who needs a manifesto to find success. Anyway, everyone has a plan 'til they go up against a mean machine full of blue-chip talent.

What strikes me more than Belichick’s plan or even that a legendary NFL coach wants to rekindle his career in college football is that North Carolina ponied up to make this happen.

Implementing Belichick’s plan, however many pages long it is, won’t be done cheaply.

North Carolina hiring Belichick announces that the Tar Heels are serious about committing – philosophically and financially – to becoming a much bigger factor in college football. Athletic director Bubba Cunningham affirmed Thursday that the Tar Heels will be “all-in” on football – just as they are with their blue-blooded basketball program.

The Moves were Going to have to be Made

The reality of the last three seasons combined with the totality of the cost of completely changing the staff again, meant that Brent Pry was going to be forced into making some major changes at critical coordinator and assistant coaching levels.

The Athletic Department announced, just this evening, that it would be parting ways with Defensive Coordinator Chris Marve, Offensive Line Coach Ron Crook, and Strength/Conditioning Coach Dwight Gault.

Miami’s Ward Wins 2024 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award (theacc.com)

Miami senior quarterback Cam Ward was voted the 2024 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner, as announced on ESPN’s The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday.

Ward is the third Hurricane to receive the country’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback trophy, joining Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992).

The ACC Player and Offensive Player of the Year and All-ACC First-Team selection, Ward leads the nation in passing touchdowns (36) and Total QBR (88.0) and ranks second in all of FBS in passing yards (4,123), passing yards per game (343.6), total offense per game (359.9), points responsible for (254), and points responsible for per game (21.2). He also ranks fourth in the nation in passing efficiency (171.1) and yards per pass attempt (9.48), all of which rank in the top two in the ACC.

This season, Ward set new single-season Miami records for both passing touchdowns and passing yards, while also becoming the first Miami player to tally seven straight 300-yard performances.

Ward, who has passed for over 300 yards in 10 games this season, has thrown for 17,999 yards over his collegiate career which ranks in the top five in NCAA history. He also has recorded 155 career touchdown passes, which is tied for the NCAA Division I career record with Case Keenum (Houston).

Ward is the first player from Miami to be named the ACC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.

Ward was also selected as a finalist for the 2024 Heisman Memorial Trophy, the Heisman Trophy Trust announced on Monday. He was also a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Manning and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards, in addition to being a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award.

Ward and the Hurricanes have had the top offense in the country all season long. Miami leads all FBS programs in scoring offense (44.2), total offense (538.3), yards per play (7.6), first downs (327) and third-down conversion rate (56.5).

The West Columbia, Texas, native has guided the Hurricanes to their first 10-win campaign in seven years.

During the regular season, Ward tied for the nation’s lead in Davey O’Brien Great 8 selections, collecting five weekly honors.

Our analysis of the 2025 season continues with a look at the "power five" non-conference games. For this post we are including any game against a team from the Big Ten, Big XII, SEC, Notre Dame, Oregon State, or Washington State - but not the in-coming Pac-12 teams (yet).

Every team gets at least two of their closest ACC conference opponents in 2025. Four teams get 3 out of 4. Five teams get all 4. The other eight get 2 out of 4 this go around.

The 3 most "centrally-located" schools - each appearing on the Top 4 of 7 other ACC schools - are Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. Those three form a triangle around Clemson, which has them as their 3 closest opponents.

Links, News and Rumors 2024 Dec 12

I posted this observation about the Conference Championship TV ratingson X last night, but I wanted to post it here as well:

NoonMid-dayEvening
XII: Arizona St
vs Iowa State
ABC: 6.90M
SEC: Georgia
vs Texas
ABC: 16.63M
B1G: Oregon
vs Penn State
CBS: 10.50M
MAC: Ohio

ESPN: 1.13M

vs Clemson
ABC: 5.98M
USA: Marshall
vs Louisiana
ESPN: 0.39M
Tot: 8.03MTot: 16.63MTot: 16.87M

One could argue - correctly, in my opinion - that the SEC got the highest TV ratings because it was unopposed. In fact, more people watched in Prime Time, but it was divided (mostly between the B1G and the ACC).

Workers assemble 5G network components at JMA Wireless' new factory in Syracuse on July 28, 2022. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

JMA Wireless wins $44 million CHIPS Act grant for Syracuse expansion, Schumer says (PS; Weiner)

JMA Wireless plans to expand its research and manufacturing operations in Syracuse after winning a nearly $44 million federal grant from the CHIPS and Science Act, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said today.

The expansion will initially lead to 30 new jobs, with the potential to grow significantly as JMA ramps up full production of its 5G wireless equipment, the company said.

All told, JMA Wireless officials said the CHIPS Act grant will allow the company to invest $75 million to open a new production line and expand testing capabilities at its plant on Syracuse’s South Side, which opened in 2022.

JMA is the only American-owned manufacturing plant that makes 5G wireless communications equipment used by cell phone companies like Verizon and AT&T.

Schumer, D-N.Y., included in his CHIPS and Science Act a Wireless Innovation Fund to help U.S. companies compete with China and companies like Huawei in the development of 5G wireless networks.

“We need the future of America’s 5G technology built in Central New York, not China,” Schumer said in a statement.

“Investments like this show the federal government is serious about taking back the reins on critical technology like 5G and making sure the future of broadband and wireless technology is stamped ‘Made in America’ with JMA leading the way,” he said.

JMA plans to use the federal money to accelerate production of its 5G open radio access network (ORAN) technology and locate it at their new Syracuse campus with their own testing laboratories.

JMA said its goal is to produce and sell more than 12,000 state-of-the-art 5G ORAN radios per year made its Syracuse campus.

The CHIPS and Science Act set aside $1.5 billion for the Wireless Innovation Fund, intended to boost U.S. technological leadership for the next generation of high-speed internet and strengthen U.S. supply chains.

It’s a lesser-known section of the law, which set aside most of its $52 billion in funding to lure computer chip manufacturers back to the United States.

Micron Technology earlier this week signed a deal with the federal government to receive $6.1 billion in CHIPS Act grants to build new chip plants in Central New York and Idaho.

Bang bang shrimp tacos with Mexican rice from from Elephant and the Dove, 9 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles.

A gorgeous restaurant and surprising value at Elephant and the Dove (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Pucci)

Of all the restaurants in the tony lakeside village of Skaneateles, Elephant and the Dove may be the most stunning.

Designed by “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” star (and Syracuse native) Thom Filicia, the whimsical, floral-heavy design is inspired by the works of Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, whose nicknames serve as the restaurant’s namesakes.

Plants hang from the skylight, illuminating the middle of the upstairs dining room, which also houses the restaurant’s open kitchen. Combined with the bold floral print wall design, the space feels like a terrarium.

Downstairs, my eyes were drawn to the tiled, marble-topped bar, where bottles of top-shelf tequila and mezcal displayed on backlit glass shelves flank a pair of TVs. Metal flower sculptures bloom from the walls and woven rattan and cloth pendant lights hang from the ceiling like tapestries, filling the space with warm light.

Soft, pillow-backed benches run along the walls on both floors. We were seated at the rear of the main floor, a cozy nook with plush couch seating that seemed miles away from the hustle and bustle of the bar area. It’s refined, yet immensely comfortable and spacious.

Simply put, it’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing restaurants in all of Central New York. Despite all that, a giant smothered burrito still starts at only $12 and almost every entree is under $20. It’s fine dining ambiance with takeout prices.
