Welcome to National Buffet Day!
Cast your New Year's weight loss resolution to the wind, it's National Buffet Day! Buffets present something for everyone, so there is no need to choose or make compromises about where to go when eating with a group. Food at buffets is located in a public area where it can be viewed and selected by diners, who can take whatever amount they want. Buffets operate at low profit margins. In general, it's a quantity-over-quality system where low-cost, filling foods are pushed. While buffets usually are self-serve, sometimes there are serving stations where employees carve meat or prepare dishes like crepes or omelets. The popularity of all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants in the United States has ebbed and flowed over decades, contingent on cultural tastes, diets, and changing economies. Buffet meals are not only served at restaurants but at large social events and in hotels.

Syracuse football offers William & Mary DB transfer who was a freshman All-American (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football is among numerous schools to extend a scholarship offer in recent days to Sascha Garcia, a talented defensive back from William & Mary who is in the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Garcia said via his X page on December 24 that he had entered the portal, with three years of collegiate eligibility left.
As a redshirt freshman with Coastal Athletic Association ("CAA") member William & Mary during the 2024 season, Garcia tallied 19 total tackles, 14 solo tackles, 11 pass breakups and one blocked field goal.
Per William & Mary, which is located in Williamsburg, Va., Garcia emerged as a starter for the Tribe midway through the 2024 campaign, and his 11 passes defended was tied for third in the CAA. In 2024, William & Mary went 7-5 overall.

As I've noted in various columns lately, the Syracuse football coaching staff has been recruiting the state of Florida hard across several classes, including 2026. And Orange coaches are having recruiting success in the Sunshine State.

Syracuse Football: Five younger players I think will have bigger roles in 2025 (itlh; Fiello)
As we start the new year and await all the changeover for the Syracuse Orange football team in 2025, the next eight months or so will be interesting to cover, I am sure. But nonetheless, there are things we can look at in the new year.
One thing we can explore is the youth that is on this team just waiting for their chance to prove themselves on the field. At the core of a quality football team will have to be youth and depth to help continue the vision that the coaching staff has for the future.
You can only get so much from the portal but you also have to recruit and develop young players who want to stay and build it up. And head coach Fran Brown has said emphatically that he is looking for certain guys who will play for the S on their chest and also do the right things away from the field and in the classrooms, plus practice and prepare the right way.
And with that said, here are five young players who haven't seen much playing time but I think if they have a good spring session at practice and do the things Coach Brown is looking for, could be big-time players in 2025.
Five younger players who should have bigger roles for Syracuse football in the 2025 season.
KingJoseph Edwards
I am starting with KingJoseph Edwards because he came to Syracuse and immediately made a positive impact with so many Syracuse fans on social media. So much so that when he didn't play even after he had three sacks against Holy Cross, Coach Brown often had people questioning his playing time. When asked, as I stated above and even KingJoseph himself reiterated in a post on Twitter/X recently, for some players, especially younger guys, there are things the coaches want to see happen not just to be players but to be a representative of the university. KingJoseph is a young guy who I believe not only can make a big impact on the field but also one day be that guy who can be a leader in the locker room who the community embraces as he grows with the program showing exactly what type of player Fran Brown and the staff want on their team on the field and off the field as well.
Jamie Tremble
With Oronde Gadsden II moving on to the NFL and Maximilian Mang graduating, that leaves a lot of room for Dan Villari and four-star Jamie Tremble. And while Dan is definitely a reliable pick for the role, I think there is so much potential in Tremble over time. And with Dan going into his senior year, the Orange will hopefully give Jamie a chance to prove he’s the tight end of the future as he possibly puts on more size and gets experience, although at 6'4 208, look out world if he does either of those.

Sugar Bowl CFP quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame postponed after deadly attack in New Orleans (PS; AP)
The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame was postponed a day because of an attack about a mile away from the Superdome early Wednesday, when a truck plowed into a New Year’s crowd and killed 10 people.
The game, originally scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Central at the 70,000-seat Superdome, has been pushed back to Thursday night, Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said.
“Public safety is paramount,” Hundley said at a media briefing alongside federal, state and local officials, including Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “All parties all agree that it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours.”
U.S. Rep. Troy Carter said the decision to postpone the game “was not done lightly.”
“It was done with one single thing in mind: public safety — making sure that the citizens and visitors of this great city, not only for this event, but for every event you come to in Louisiana, that you will be safe,” Carter added. “And we will use every resource possible.”
Landry said he had a message for those thinking, “Man, do I really want to go to the Sugar Bowl tomorrow?”
“I tell you one thing: Your governor’s going to be there,” Landry said. “That is proof, believe you me, that that facility and this city is safer today than it was yesterday.”
Hundley said work was underway to “set up a safe and efficient and fun environment” at and around the Superdome on Thursday night. “We live in the fun-and-games world with what we do, but we certainly recognize the importance of this and support (public safety efforts) 100%.”
The Superdome was on lockdown for security sweeps on Wednesday morning, when people with offices in the Superdome — including officials with the Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Conference — were told not to come into work until further notice.
Some credentialed Superdome employees were permitted into offices by Wednesday afternoon.

Two ACC Programs Make Coaching Staff Moves (theclemsoninsider..com; Staff)
A couple of Clemson’s ACC foes have made changes to their coaching staffs for next season.
Both NC State and Miami made moves with coordinator positions this week.
On Tuesday, NC State announced D.J. Eliot is its new defensive coordinator. Eliot replaces Tony Gibson, who was hired as Marshall’s head coach. Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator.
“D.J. is a great addition to our staff,” NC State head coach Dave Doeren said in a statement. “He has worked with some of the greatest minds in college football, mostly recently with Dave Aranda at Baylor. He brings a wide variety of experience schematically and as a former NFL coach, he knows what it takes to develop players so they can make it to the next level.”
The Wolfpack also made a change at offensive coordinator this week. NC State fired OC Robert Anae and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.
“Kurt has done a great job for us and knows what we need to do to take the next step forward as a program,” Doeren said. “He has a great relationship with our players, a great knowledge of college football and the ACC, and I’m looking forward to seeing him as a play caller.”
Meanwhile, Miami fired defensive coordinator Lane Guidry on Tuesday after its defensive struggles down the stretch of this season.
“In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said in a statement. “We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The Buckeyes pretty much dominated from the Starr.
Wait... didn't ESPN tell us that the Peach Bowl was going to be a blow-out, while the Rose Bowl would be close? And these are the guys who say CFP teams should be selected based on which teams they think will be most competitive?

From ESPN: Miami fires DC Lance Guidry after late-season defensive woes
Miami fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry on Tuesday after late-season defensive woes effectively cost the Hurricanes a chance to play for a conference championship... the Hurricanes regressed in the final month [of the season], including a 42-38 loss to Syracuse in the regular-season finale with an ACC championship game berth on the line.
Miami blew a 21-0 lead and finished the regular season with losses in two of its final three games and failed to advance to Charlotte to play for the conference title. Miami finished two spots outside the final CFP spot.
Then, in a 42-41 Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to Iowa State, Miami blew a 10-point third-quarter lead...
I don't wish to see anyone lose their job, but it was painful to watch the Hurricanes' defense at times.

From SaturdayBlitz: Bill Belichick already has North Carolina thinking national championships
Borrowing from his good friend Nick Saban’s proven system at Alabama, Belichick is building a program that mirrors the efficiency and precision of an NFL team. From staffing to recruiting, he’s diving into the college game with the same meticulous attention to detail that earned him six Lombardi Trophies.
“I’ve watched how Nick put together his staff and scouting at Alabama, and I’m copying a lot of what I saw him do,” Belichick shared in a recent interview. “The goal here is to prepare players for the NFL while helping them succeed on and off the field.”
It sounds good, but we'll have to see how well it works in practice.

The former New Venture Gear auto parts plant in DeWitt, now named NVG Industrial Campus, has a dozen tenants occupying nearly all its 1.7 million square feet of space. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com

A frozen food warehouse that will employ up to 100 people is planned for the former New Venture Gear auto parts plant in DeWitt.
The 350,000-square-foot building with a clear ceiling height of 60 feet will be built on a 10-acre parcel on the southern portion of the former auto plant property off New Venture Gear Drive, said Robert Trafford, managing partner of ONX1 LLC, which owns the site.
He said the warehouse will store frozen and refrigerated foods for a tenant that will lease the building from ONX1. Trafford said he was not yet at liberty to disclose the name of the tenant.
The facility will operate around the clock and employ 75 to 100 people, he said. Construction is slated to start in the spring, with completion targeted for late 2025.
The warehouse is the latest development in Trafford’s successful efforts to turn the former auto plant into a multitenant industrial campus.
The plant once employed 4,000 people making transfer cases and other parts for four-wheel drive vehicles. But its workforce was down to 370 people when Magna International shut it down in 2012.
ONX1 bought the property from Magna when the plant closed. It is a subsidiary of OX Group LLC, a Florida-based real estate development and management company specializing in the restoration and repurposing of high-profile facilities formerly used for industrial purposes.
The company owns multiple sites throughout the country, including Silver City Industrial Park located, the former Oneida Silver factory, in Sherrill.
The former New Venture Gear site is now named NVG Industrial Campus. Nearly all its 1.7 million square feet of industrial space is utilized by a dozen industrial tenants, mostly warehouse and distribution companies.
They include Byrne Dairy, which occupies 235,000 square feet of dry goods storage and warehouse space, and FedEx Ground, which operates a 157,000-square-foot distribution facility.

It’s a sellers market: State of CNY real estate in charts (PS; $; Tampone)
The residential real estate market in Central New York has been favoring sellers in a big way in recent years and that was again the case in 2024.
Since the region’s real estate market roared back to life following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Central New Yorkers have been seeing competition for properties unlike anything in recent memory. Waived inspections, bidding wars and multiple offers have become the norm, where they were previously exceptions.
Realtors have advised buyers to have patience and told them cash offers with no strings or contingencies will generally win out.
Sale prices have been climbing.
The sellers' market is reflected in 2024 data on Central New York residential real estate compiled by the Greater Syracuse Association of Realtors. The numbers cover activity in Cayuga, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Seneca counties.
A few key stats tell the story.
Percent above list price
Before 2020, the typical home sale in Central New York closed for less than the list price, sometimes by 4% or more. Now, sellers are typically getting more than their list prices — thanks to buyers bidding aggressively, often by more than 4%.
In every month but one since November 2023, for example, buyers have averaged a final sale price above list in Central New York. The 12-month average for the period that ended in October was 2.7% over list price.
