Football officially returns in three days.

The 2014 training camp schedule was announced today, and Syracuse will hold its first preseason practice on Saturday afternoon.

The team will also spend a week at Fort Drum on Aug. 12-15. It's the third straight year the football team is heading to the military base, where it incorporates military training exercises around its on-field practice work.

Of public interest, there will be one opportunity for fans to watch practice, and that will be at the annual Fan Fest held Aug. 9. Fan Fest will run from 3-7 p.m., with practice overlapping from 4:45-6:40 p.m.

SU Football 14 in '14" How Fast Can McDonald's Offense Go? (PS; Axe)

"We're going to open it up on offense and go full-bore fast. Like an Oregon, Texas A&M style of offense."

Those words from Syracuse University football offensive coordinator George McDonald, published by Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans back in February sent a much-needed jolt through Orange Nation.

Go as fast as Oregon and Texas A&M? Join the revolution of football teams that want to keep defenses on their toes and make fans feel like they will miss something if they walk away to grab a beverage or a bathroom break?

SU Verbal Daiquan Kelly is Considered One of the Top Ten Players in NJ in the Class of 2015

Is the Key for Future SU Football Success Beating Rutgers for New Jersey Recruits? (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer has made a mission out of improving the Orange's recruiting presence in the Northeast, hiring an assistant coach with New Jersey ties and increasing the number of local recruits this season.

Despite the fact the fact that realignment money has been counted, Rutgers coach Kyle Flood continues to beat the drum that the Scarlet Knights "move the needle" in New York and New Jersey.

The reasons for their public posturing are clear. New Jersey is likely the most critical state to the potential improvement of both programs.

...
Dohn traced Syracuse's fall from regional relevance to the Scarlet Knights' improvement in the New Jersey recruiting market under Greg Schiano. Even Shafer noted the connection when hiring assistant coach Bobby Acosta this offseason.

The pipeline appears to have reversed again this recruiting cycle after Shafer's staff delivered a solid first year in the ACC and the Scarlet Knights' fired an assortment of assistant coaches just before moving into the Big Ten.

"I credit (Syracuse's improvement) more to uncertainty at Rutgers than anything else," Dohn said.

Report: Early Signing Period Committee Formed to Discuss College Football Recruiting Process (PS; Bailey)

The Collegiate Commissioners Association has formed a panel to research and discuss the potential addition of an early signing period in college football, according an ESPN.com report.

The committee, chaired by Mid-America Conference commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, could help clean up the recruiting process.

Currently, football recruits can not officially commit to a school until signing a letter of intent on or after National Signing Day in February. This has introduced a whole new set of terminology, including verbal commitments (which one professor called "essentially meaningless") and committable offers. Every other major collegiate sport offers an opportunity for players to make an official commitment before the February of their senior years.

Winston is the One

2014 College Football Preview/Haiku Fest: Nos. 1-5 (FSU Has the Talent to Repeat at National Champions; PS; Stevens)

...
1. FLORIDA STATE

What goes around, comes around. When a school recruits at an absurdly high level and all but one or two teams in the rest of its conference do not, you get Florida State.

That's Florida State of the 1990s under Bobby Bowden, and it's Florida State two decades later under Jimbo Fisher.

But what's been lost in the Seminoles' emergence from a relative slumber over the last couple years is the acumen of Fisher and his staff in evaluating players. Heavens knows if Fisher is actually a good game coach or not, but you don't have to worry about that when you attract good players, develop them at a high level and then send them out to trounce all comers before the postseason. Fisher's done all three of those things

Any segment on Florida State warrants a mention of Jameis Winston, and he certainly earned his Heisman Trophy last year with his on-field play. But look at the Seminoles' roster, which boasts an experienced offensive line, incredible skill in the secondary and lots of promise on the defensive line. Having those three things makes it easy to win a lot of games, even before an excellent quarterback is thrown in.

So while there are pieces to replace (Kelvin Benjamin comes to mind) and the linebackers are relatively untested, Florida State again has a complete team. There are regular-season opponents who could plausibly pull off an upset, but it's going to require some cooperation from the Seminoles. They didn't play down to anybody last year, and it will be a surprise if that happens this season.

Crustacean Nation approves
Winston has a chance

Jets Training Camp 2014: 6 Places to Grab Lunch in Cortland, Maybe Run Into Rex Ryan (PS; Tulloch)

...
1. Hairy Tony's
102 Main St., Cortland
On Main Street, the gastropub Hairy Tony's might be your best bet. Mike Bersani of SUNY Cortland said it's "probably the spot I've seen the most players when they do eat in town rather than on campus." Check it out in the photos above. It's the one behind the giant Dark Horse balloon of a Jets player.

Darryl Slater, the New York Jets beat reporter for The Star-Ledger, once spotted former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and a few other players eating at the table next to his. "It was a quiet night in there, and not many people were swarming the Jets players or anything like that," Slater said in an email. "I think Sanchez signed a couple autographs, but that was it."

2. Doug's Fish Fry
206 W Rd., Cortland
Within walking distance to the training camp fields, Doug's Fish Fry is popular with ESPN personalities as well as players. Owner Mark Braun has been a Jets fan for 33 years, so the restaurant is decked out in green all year long.

2014 New York Jets Training Camp Schedule at Cortland (PS; Kramer)

The New York Jets will begin their fifth training camp at SUNY Cortland with the opening practice on Thursday.

The Jets camp will run for about three weeks and will also include a Green & White scrimmage on Aug. 2. In addition to watching the action, fans can pick up the latest gear and merchandise at the Jets Shop tent and check out this year's Jets Fest, an interactive football theme park for children that offers skill challenges and inflatable rides.

At the Jets' 2013 camp, 21,000 visitors from 34 states and five countries spent more than $1.6 million locally, creating an economic impact of nearly $3.7 million, according to a study by SUNY Cortland faculty members. Overall, the four New York training camps hosted at SUNY Cortland since 2009 have generated $19.24 million in economic impact for Cortland County.

Coach Lea appears to be playing Pompey hole #2. Nice course. The owners allow the coaching staff to play it for free; nice gesture; props to the Gormans for doing that.

With the tees moved all the way up and Coach Lea's distance (he is a masher), it is very possible he drove the green.

Yep, that is exactly where that is.

While I appreciate Dohn's Rutgers-centric view of the football universe, I'd much rather the Post Standard pick the brain of one Todd Hunt for pure entertainment value.

No kidding. I'd say that our coaching staffs, superior game planning despite being short handed, etc. were far more important to righting the ship than anything having to do with Rutgers. Toad is a buffoon.
