Scott Shafer Details the Unusual Process Used to Pick Its Captains (PS; Carlson)
The Syracuse football team hasn't been able to hit, block or tackle yet in training camp due to NCAA rules, leaving coach Scott Shafer talking about leadership as much as performance through the first two days.
More than any other character trait, the Orange showed togetherness and toughness in 2013, surviving a new conference and coaching staff, enduring blowout losses and late injuries.
Shafer credited last year's seniors, particularly the captains, for SU's ability to qualify for a bowl game on its final chance.

Ryan Norton Putting Mistakes Behind Him (PS; Mink)
With the opportunity to be the starting kicker in front of him, junior Ryan Norton is putting past mistakes behind him to be "as good as I can be for myself" and his Syracuse teammates heading into the 2014 season.
A pair of off-field infractions caused him to miss the Nov. 2 victory against Wake Forest and this year's spring game. Norton said he and head coach Scott Shafer met earlier this summer, characterizing those talks as "good discussions."
"He's doing a good job," Shafer said. "Like so many of the young men this day and age, you make mistakes and then you rebound. You make mistakes, you rebound. You'd like to hope that everybody wouldn't make those mistakes, but that's not living in reality. I've been pleased with the way he has approached his comeback."

SU Alumni Helped Direct Washington OL Transfer Taylor Hindy to Syracuse (PS; Bailey)
If there's one thing Syracuse University alumni pride themselves on, particularly in the sports industry, it's their network.
Many SU alumni have been hired through that Orange connection, and this summer the football team added a player by the same method.
Head coach Scott Shafer spoke about how the program came into contact with former Washington offensive lineman Taylor Hindy during his press conference on Monday.

Josh Kirkland Suffers a Bruised Right Knee (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse senior linebacker Josh Kirkland suffered a bruised right knee at the beginning of practice on Monday, according to SU head coach Scott Shafer.
As media walked onto the practice field at 4:45 p.m., Kirkland was already lying on the field being attended to by a staff member. The rest of the team was stretching.
Head coach Scott Shafer said Kirkland bumped knees with someone.

PJ Batten Back Working with the Tight Ends...
On Sunday, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer mentioned defensive back Darius Kelly as a possible replacement for Charley Loeb at holder.
Kelly's versatility and athleticism make him an interesting option for tricks plays, but at practice on Monday it was the Orange's other candidate for holder that threw a touchdown pass.
Punter Riley Dixon rolled out to his right and found defensive end Micah Robinson in the end zone for what would have been a touchdown.

2 Experts Pick BC to Finish Ahead of Syracuse (PS; Carlson)
Get out your brooms and pitchforks.
CBS Sports college football analysts Jon Solomon and Jerry Palm won't get a warm reception the next time they roll into the Carrier Dome.
The two experts both predicted that the Orange will finish sixth in the Atlantic Division this season, below even a Boston College team that lost 15 starters and a Heisman Trophy candidate in running back Andre Williams.

SU Football 14 for '14: Scott Shafer Won Over Fanms; Can He Keep Winning Games for Them? (PS; Axe)
You want Syracuse University football head coach Scott Shafer in a nutshell?
All you have to do is just take a look at how Shafer handled delivering the news that SU kicker Ross Krautman had to hang up the cleats and end his Syracuse football career on Saturday.
Shafer spoke with genuine compassion in telling the assembled media that Krautman's career was over.

A Preseason Look at QB Competitions Around the League (PS; Stevens)
The start of the ACC's football season just 24 days away warrants a look at several subplots throughout the league. Up today: Six quarterback situations (in no particular order) in need of resolution before the end of the month.
Georgia Tech: The favorite here is redshirt sophomore Justin Thomas, who backed up Vad Lee a year ago. Lee, once assumed to be the Yellow Jackets' long-term solution, transferred to James Madison after last season, creating a bit of an unexpected vacancy in Atlanta.
Also in the mix is Tim Byerly, who spent a year at Middle Tennessee, sat out a year as a transfer and then had four passing attempts and 18 rushes last season at Georgia Tech.

Cuse Tops ACC Experience Ranks (espn.com; Steele)
Way back in 2002, in a time before freshmen won Heisman trophies, I based my yearly team experience rankings on returning senior starters and actually penalized teams for having freshman starters. Then Tim Tebow won the Heisman in 2007 and started a trend of underclassmen playing more prominent roles. By 2009, I had to tweak my formula to factor in returning letter winners, percentage of yards and tackles returning, and career offensive line starts returning.
While experience doesn't necessarily trump talent, teams from the Power Five conferences that have ranked in the top 10 of my experience rankings since 2009 have seen their records, on average, improve or stay the same over the previous year 76 percent of the time. On the opposite end of the spectrum, teams that have ranked in the bottom 10 of my experience rankings have seen their records, on average, get weaker or stay the same 78 percent of the time.
It is worth noting that the average experience ranking for teams playing in the national championship game since 2009 is just 49th, with last year's national champ Florida State Seminoles coming in at 78. That makes sense when you consider that most championship contenders lose several starting underclassmen to the NFL draft each year but make up for the losses by bringing in elite recruits.

Villanova Football Opens Preseason Camp with First Practice (villanova.com)
Villanova officially began preparations for the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon with a spirited workout on the Villanova Stadium turf. The team's preseason camp runs for three weeks leading up to the start of classes on Monday, August 25.
Entering the 2014 season, Villanova returns 15 starters and 33 letterwinners from last year's team that went 6-5 overall and 5-3 in CAA play. With an experienced group returning the Wildcats have their sights set on earning the program's fifth playoff appearance in the last seven years.
Villanova is picked to finish second in the CAA in the conference's preseason predicted order of finish, while the Wildcats are also ranked as high as No. 5 in the country in some preseason national polls.
Junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J.) has been named the CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He enters the 2014 season ranked fourth on Villanova's all-time rushing list with 2,426 yards and seventh on the school's all-time passing list with 3,922 yards through the air. Robertson is tied for second on the program's career touchdown list with 34 scores.
