Syracuse coach Scott Shafer held court for about 13 minutes following Wednesday's practice.
Syracuse wide receiver Corey Winfield taking his 40-inch vertical over to cornerback (PS; Mink)
Wanting to find a way to utilize Corey Winfield's athleticism sooner, Syracuse coach Scott Shafer has moved the redshirt freshman to cornerback.
Shafer explained the position change following Wednesday's practice, the first session of camp in which the team wore full pads. He said Winfield is "too good of an athlete to be a backup or a backup to a backup," and his athleticism and vertical jump of around 40 inches bodes well for his long-term success there.
"I think there will be a day when Corey Winfield is a very good corner," Shafer said.
Winfield expressed a brief moment of disappointment when he learned of the move. Shafer said he "dropped his chin for five or 10 minutes, picked up the phone" and talked to his family before practicing with the defensive backs.
There will be a natural transition period for Winfield, but safety Durell Eskridge — who was sold on Shafer's plan to play safety in college instead of wide receiver — said facing corners and understanding how they move should help with the change.
"He can jump," Eskridge said. "He comes from the green jersey side where they kind of run from contact. We're just bringing him over, introducing him to contact, and once he gets that down pat he's going to be a very good player."

Syracuse football cornerback Joey Nassib separates right shoulder (Day 5 news and notes (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse cornerback Joey Nassib separated his right shoulder earlier this week and will undergo an MRI to further determine his treatment, SU head coach Scott Shafer said on Wednesday.
The senior cornerback had the arm in a sling during the open portion of practice Wednesday afternoon.
"Joe's been a valuable teammate for a long time," Shafer said. "I'm extremely close to him. It's disappointing, but he's a tough little cowboy, and when they tell him when to get back, he'll be back three days before that."

Who would Syracuse football coaching staff nominate in ACC's six-pack competition? (PS; Carlson)
The Syracuse coaching staff might have a viable entrant in the ACC's impromptu six-pack competition. Or it might not. You'll never find out.
As social media continues to proliferate the college football world, it was inevitable that Twitter pictures of college football coaches would become an obsession among fanbases.
Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury's shirtless photo traveled across the country and spawned T-shirts reading: "Our coach is hotter than your coach."
North Carolina coach Larry Fedora followed suit on Twitter, posting a photo from the beach and putting his abs on prominent display. His Tobacco Road cohorts, Duke's David Cutcliffe and Dave Doeren, matched him with humor, holding up color-coded six-packs of beer.

Clemson football fan predicts that, like last year, Tigers will again shatter Syracuse (Mailbag; PS; Poliquin)
ACC football: 6 notable nonconference games for 2014 (PS; Stevens)
Clemson at Georgia, Aug. 30: Even if Georgia didn't end up being as good as most folks thought it would be last season, Clemson still earned a measure of validation with its opening week defeat of the Bulldogs in Death Valley. Now comes the back end of the home-and-home, and it features a very different version of the Tigers.
Tajh Boyd is gone, and so is Sammy Watkins. Ditto effective tailback Roderick McDowell and No. 2 wideout Martavis Bryant. Georgia, with star tailback Todd Gurley, should be favored, but it wouldn't be a titanic upset if Clemson snagged another victory over the Bulldogs. At the least, it's one of the opening weekend's most fascinating games, regardless of which conferences are involved.
Virginia Tech at Ohio State, Sept. 6: The Hokies do not have a great history over the last seven years of doing well in road and neutral environments early in the season. A 48-7 loss at Louisiana State in 2007. A 27-22 setback against East Carolina in Charlotte the following year. Losses to Alabama in Atlanta in 2009 (34-24) and 2013 (35-10). A stumble in the D.C. suburbs against Boise State in 2010 (33-30). Even a 17-10 triumph at East Carolina in 2011 was harrowing.

Syracuse football quarterbacks coach Tim Lester waiting for someone to take lead in backup race (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse, N.Y. —Through four practices, Syracuse hasn't made much headway in the backup quarterback battle, according to quarterbacks coach Tim Lester.
Between current competitors redshirt freshman Mitch Kimble, who entered camp with a slight lead, classmate Austin Wilson and true freshman AJ Long — freshman Alin Edouard is expected to join once he returns from a family/personal obligation — no one has stepped up yet.
"It's been up and down," Lester said. "The first two days I was really disappointed with all three of them. I didn't think any one of them really took a lead. I was really hoping someone would come out of the blocks. None of them did.
