Training with America's Best (cuse.com)

When Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance Will Hicks assembled the Orange for a workout Tuesday morning, his audience was much larger than normal.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division joined the Syracuse student-athletes for a morning workout on the second day of Cuse's week at Fort Drum.

The group went through a lengthy workout, with the soldiers mixed in between each player.

"What we do we think is real, real serious, but it's not as close to being as serious as what these guys do," Hicks said. "So for us to be able to [workout together] and for them to have a little fun with it and get away from what they actually do and enjoy being 18 to 23-year-old young men, I think that was just as important as anything we did in the workout.

Scott Shafer Sees Relationship with Fort Drum Getting Stronger (PS; Mink)

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer and Colonel David Doyle of the Second Brigade Combat Team shared the podium following Tuesday afternoon's practice here at Sligh Field.

In the video above, Shafer and Doyle talk about the budding relationship between the football program and the military unit, one that will be prevalent throughout the week as players and soldiers participate in team-building activities and sit with each other during meals.

On Wednesday, the coaching staff will meet with military leaders and share ideas about team building.

SU Receivers Sean Avant, Corey Cooper Miss Practice with Upper Body Injuries (PS; Bailey)

A wide receivers group that was 17 members strong early in training camp is currently down to 10.

After walk-on Franklin Santos decided to hang up his cleats, redshirt freshman Corey Winfield was switched to cornerback. Then sophomore Brisly Estime sprained his ankle. Earlier on Tuesday, SU Athletics announced freshman Adly Enoicy and redshirt junior Keenan Hale would require surgery for lower-body injuries.

And late Tuesday afternoon, SU head coach Scott Shafer said that redshirt freshman Sean Avant and freshman Corey Cooper both missed practice with upper-body injuries.

"We'll take it day by day with them and see when we can get them back," Shafer said. "It'll be two or three days, no more than that."

Parris Bennett (30)

Observations from First SU Practice at Fort Drum (PS; Mink)

...
here are a few observations from the 30 minutes media was permitted to watch practice.

1. Cam Lynch and Dyshawn Davis have continued to assert themselves as leaders among the linebackers. Both were Nos. 1 and 2 in line for drill work and set the tone for the unit with precise technique.

Marqez Hodge plays low to the ground, moves well and is powerful at the point of attack. Freshmen Zaire Franklin, Colton Moskal and Parris Bennett are sound technicians.

A quick note: Redshirt junior Ollie Vigille returned to practice but wore a white non-contact jersey.

2. Here's how I observed the secondary through drills. Brandon Reddish, Julian Whigham, Durell Eskridge and Darius Kelly were the first four out. Wayne Morgan, Chauncey Scissum, Ritchy Desir and Eric Anthony were the next four out.

SU Football Puts Fort Drum Personnel Through Team's Warm Up Routine (PS; Bailey)

At the end of their morning training session, the Syracuse football players and Fort Drum military members circled up and cheered raucously inside the ballroom of the community activity center.

For most of the four days the Orange will spend in Fort Drum, it will be learning from military personnel. But during the physical training session on Tuesday, SU strength and conditioning coach Will Hicks flipped the script.

Orange Build Relationships on Day 2 at Fort Drum (cuse.com)

Fostering relationships was the theme for the Orange on Tuesday when the team spent its first full day at Fort Drum, with Syracuse meeting new faces of the 2nd Brigade Combat team – the team's host this year – and looking forward to rekindling relationships with troops from previous visits.

Syracuse had its first interactions with members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team during a morning workout and lunch prior to the team's first practice on post.

Col. David Doyle – the unit's commander – formally welcomed head coach Scott Shaferand the Orange to Fort Drum following practice.

"On behalf of Major General Townsend and the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum, it's my honor to welcome the Syracuse football team here to our installation as they prepare for their upcoming season," Doyle said. "We've had a long relationship with the Syracuse football team thanks to coach's efforts and the unit that previously handled this responsibility just came back from Afghanistan and we're very fortunate to have accepted this role on their behalf.

ACC News

SU FS Durell Eskridge Among ACC Defensive Backs to Watch (PS; Stevens)

The start of the ACC's football season just 16 days away warrants a look at several subplots throughout the league. Up today: Six notable defensive backs throughout the conference.

S Jeremy Cash, Duke: The junior, who began his career at Ohio State, found himself in the middle of nearly everything last season. He led the Blue Devils in solo tackles and shared the team lead in interceptions, helping to solidify the secondary as Duke earned a Coastal Division title.

So, now what? Probably another solid, reliable season as something of a hybrid safety/linebacker. The hard-hitting Cash is crucial to Duke's defensive system, both for his coverage and ability to makes tackles in open space. If the Blue Devils make a return trip to the ACC title game, Cash will probably play more than a bit role in making it happen.

S Durell Eskridge, Syracuse: Whatever the short list of the Orange's top players is, Eskridge appears at or near the top of it. The junior led Syracuse in tackles and interceptions in the program's first season in the ACC, and opted to remain in school rather than turn pro.

He'll be one of the aggressive Orange defense's cornerstones this season. In addition to his fine work in the secondary, Eskridge also made a few cameos as a wide receiver a year ago.

Ryan Nassib Getting Some Smaps with Third Team at NY Giant Practice (PS; Axe)

Just two days after leading the New York Giants downfield on a game-winning drive in their preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Curtis Painter was taking reps with the second-team offense at practice Monday.

Does that spell bad news for former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib?

Nassib is competing with Painter for the Giants' backup quarterback job behind Eli Manning.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday not to read too much into it.

"They'll work back and forth like that," Coughling said on Nassib and Painter switching between the second and third team offense.
