Ron Oyer Wearing the Spider Helmet
Hal Rooney, aka 'The Black Widow'
SU Football Time Machine Set to 1964, When the SU Defense Called Themselves 'The Spiders' (DO; Cronauer)

The Military Academy can keep its Bandits — Syracuse University has its Spiders.
For those of you not up to date on the latest football fad in Orangeland, the Spiders are the first-string SU defensive unit.
And here’s hoping that Hill fans won’t confuse the local Spiders with the Spiders we played last season, Richmond by name. The Orange “insects” reportedly have a bit more sting than their Virginia counterparts. Group members may be recognized by the spider and web emblems dotting the fronts of their helmets, with white streaks painted down the center.
The Spider idea originated during spring practice and came to the fore at the start of sessions this fall.
Actual founder of the unit was Hal Rooney, a junior defensive back from Patchogue, L.I. Rooney acquired a tattooed spider on his ankle last spring and the name rose to prominence during pre-season practice.

Editor's Note: Sadly, Boston College Defeated #9 ranked Syracuse September 19th, 1964 in Chestnut Hill 21-14. It was only the second time the Eagles defeated a Syracuse team.

Last season Lowell walloped St. John's Prep, 41-0, in the first round before losing to Everett, 21-0, in a Division 1 North semifinal.
Lowell's calling card is its defense, led by Syracuse-bound linebacker Shy Cullen. On offense, the Red Raiders will open their season Friday night at Cawley Stadium against Westford with their fourth different starting quarterback in John Florence's four years as coach. Juniors Shaymus Dunn and Matt Smith competed for the job until Smith recently suffered a season-ending arm injury in a scrimmage.
