Better Execution, Continued Talent Upgrade Needed for SU Football (sujuiceonline.com; Bierman)

Following a game effort against a better opponent in last weekend’s 31-15 setback to now-No. 8/9 Notre Dame in the program-branding boosting, big time live atmosphere of MetLife Stadium, and the national TV spotlight of the ABC primetime broadcast, there was a common theme among the Orange players over the frustration of not being able to take advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves during the evening in the bid to upset a Top Ten team.
“Notre Dame was really disciplined in what they were doing,” said running back Prince-Tyson Gulley after the loss dropped SU to 2-2, and who’s so far averaging 70 yards a game rushing in his final year of eligibility. “After these first four games I know that we can compete with anybody, I will tell you that. We just have to execute what we are doing.”
Ah, the dreaded “E” word. The need for better execution, along with less unforced errors and mental mistakes, inopportune penalties (averaging eight a game), and missed points in the kicking game (six of 10 field goals) would sum up the postgame theme in both September defeats.

Spencer Tears, One of the Top RBs in Northern Illinois, Has Syracuse in His Top Three (chicagotribune.com; Narang)

...
Tears combines the moves and speed of a much smaller player packed into a 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame. He said he was clocked at 4.46 in the 40-yard dash in the summer.
"Spencer is very tall and lanky and very athletic," Sheehan said. "He has good ball skills."
Ranked No. 15 in the state of Illinois for the Class of 2015 by 247Sports.com, Tears received an offer from Syracuse earlier this month to run his total to 11 offers, which include Louisville, Indiana, Nebraska, Purdue and Bowling Green. Tears orally committed to Nebraska in April at the Red-White spring game but decommitted.

Tears has 11 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns this season and said he is leaning toward Louisville, Syracuse or Bowling Green.

On Syracuse: They played really well last week against Notre Dame. Defensively, they're gonna blitz us. They're gonna come after you. They came after Notre Dame the entire game. They're fast. They're very fast on defense. Their linebackers aren't big but they're really fast.
Offensively, we have to be able to stop their quarterback. He's big. He's physical. I was actually impressed by the way he threw the ball last week. He really improved in his ability to throw the ball. They had a receiver who had over 100 yards, so we're going to have to know where he is and what he does. It's going to be a great challenge for us.
On Syracuse's pass rush: We've faced some pretty good pass rushes, but these guys are fast. They have some good players on defense.
On players eyeing Clemson, FSU games: I don't think so at all. I don't think we worry about looking ahead. We know we have a great challenge to get focused, go on the road. Maybe we have an advantage that we have a group of players who have a chip on their shoulders about a couple years ago when they went up to Syracuse.

Planning for success: Syracuse (ESPN: Fortuna)

When Scott Shafer met with his team last Tuesday, he did not harp on Syracuse's home loss to Maryland so much as what lied ahead for the Orange. The ACC scheduling gods seemed to do the second-year ACC program little favor, after all, with the slate in front of it.

From (a previously scheduled) game with Notre Dame this past Saturday, to Louisville and Florida State visiting the Carrier Dome in the next two weeks, to a trip to Clemson at the end of the month, Syracuse has its hands full as it tries to build off last year's surprising 7-6 campaign in Shafer's debut season.

But the second-year head coach has taken a big-picture approach with his program, now 2-2 after a 31-15 loss to the Fighting Irish at MetLife Stadium. And Shafer is hoping it serves them well, especially with ACC newcomer Louisville awaiting this Friday night...

Scott Shafer coming on his weekly teleconference now. Will tweet out updates.

Shafer: "Terrel Hunt's been progressing well. He's really improved his passing game, his anticipation."

Shafer said CB Wayne Morgan had knee surgery last week. "We're going to take it week-by-week to see how he's progressing."

Shafer on K Cole Murphy starting: "We go through practice, we chart it and I get the final decision." Happy about the way he kicked vs. UND

Kendall Moore (concussion) is doing well. Got two knees to the head back-to-back. "He's probably doubtful for this weekend."

Just to clarify: Wayne Morgan will not play this weekend.

Ivan Foy is "probably doubtful" for this weekend with knee soreness. Shafer said he was glad he had a knee brace on vs. UND.

Shafer said Kendall Moore is back in class today. Good sign for him.

Shafer said Brisly Estime (ankle) is working hard to be ready for this weekend. Didn't comment on his status.

So looks like no Wayne Morgan (definite), Kendall Moore or Ivan Foy for Louisville. 9-game stretch already taking a toll.

ACC Upset Watch: Week 6 (ESPN)

Louisville (4-1, 2-1) at Syracuse (2-2), 7 p.m., ESPN. Line: Louisville by 4. The last time the Cardinals took a trip to the Carrier Dome, they were unbeaten and ranked No. 9 in the country. They promptly lost, as Scott Shafer completely befuddled Teddy Bridgewater and company while serving as defensive coordinator. Shafer is now the head coach, though Louisville looks radically different than the team that came to town in 2012. The offense has been running in starts and stops, and quarterback remains up in the air. Meanwhile, Syracuse had some highlights on defense in a loss to Notre Dame that it can perhaps build upon headed into its league opener.

not sure how 9 game is taking a toll yet.. we had a bye week 2, many teams had a bye week 3.. we could have had a bye week 4 and still had those injuries.. its the nagging stuff that playing every week causes.
