Clemson Football Culture Shows Why Syracuse Will Stay Behind (DO; Dougherty)

Half a dozen fields are filled with tailgaters seven hours before kickoff, sweet tea is the same price as water and there isn’t a cloud in the sky. There are as many Clemson-themed tents as there are cars and RVs and a cutout of Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is holding a cake and wishing a 4-year-old fan named Bobby “A Happy Clemson Birthday” in a speech bubble.

Syracuse and No. 21 Clemson are set to kick off at 7 p.m. And just past noon on homecoming Saturday there is more than enough orange paraphernalia to fill 10 Carrier Domes and enough purple to satisfy years of Mardi Gras parades.

There’s no game to watch, not yet, but it’s already the consummate Atlantic Coast Conference football environment.

Welcome to Tiger town. Clemson country. Death Valley.

Syracuse Football Stock Watch: Sean Hickey Doubles Down on Chick-Fil-A, Ashton Broyld Returns (PS; Mink)

Only four more games left in this 2014 regular season, and Syracuse needs to win three of those if it wants to go bowling.

It can start carving out a path to the postseason Saturday afternoon against North Carolina State at the Carrier Dome.

Here is a look at who is rising and falling heading into that pivotal ACC matchup.

Stock up:
Defensive turnovers: Syracuse turned Clemson over four times on Saturday to raise its takeaway total to 17 on the season. Only 15 schools in the FBS have forced more turnovers than the Orange this year.

And, who knows? With a little more firepower on offense, maybe Syracuse would own a signature win or two because of it.

Sean Hickey: The fifth-year senior left tackle drew Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley all game and helped limit him to just three tackles (one for loss).

Gallman, Clemson Running Attack Expose Syracuse on the Ground in the 2nd Half (DO; D'Abbraccio)

Out of the 11 first downs Clemson earned in the second half, seven came via the ground game.

Conservatively, the Tigers amped up their rushing attack in the last 30 minutes to work the clock and chip away at Syracuse’s sturdy defense. Ultimately, No. 21 Clemson (6-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast) owned the clock in the second half and effectively put the finishing touches on its 16-6 victory over the Orange (3-5, 1-3) on Saturday night.

CU running back Wayne Gallman had just 17 rushing yards at the half, but eclipsed 100 by the time the faithful of Death Valley engulfed the Memorial Stadium field after the final horn.

“I thought, stopping the run, we did a good job up until the end,” SU defensive end Robert Welsh said.

SU Linebackers Lead Defense in Solid Performance Against Clemson (DO; D'Abbraccio)

For the seventh time in eight games this year, a Syracuse linebacker led the team in tackles.

During Syracuse’s (3-5, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) 16-6 shortcoming at No. 21 Clemson (6-2, 5-1) on Saturday night, the Orange’s defense shut down the Tigers’ attack throughout the first 45 minutes and its linebackers were the core of the defensive effort.

Out of the Orange’s seven tackles for loss, linebackers logged three of them. Cameron Lynch led the way with 10 tackles and fellow senior Dyshawn Davis added nine while forcing and recovering a fumble.

Both players also surpassed 200 career tackles with SU.

“We did OK. On that pass, I wish I could take that one back,” Lynch said, referring to his assignment, Clemson tight end Stanton Seckinger, scoring a decisive fourth-quarter touchdown. “Other than that, go back to the drawing board, focus on what we have to focus on and just be sharp in our preparation.”

Hickey's Brief Absence Shows His Presence on SU OL (DO; Dougherty)

It was easy to overlook Sean Hickey until he wasn’t on the field.

Syracuse’s starting left tackle limped to the Orange sideline early in the second quarter, which left tackle Michael Lasker across from All-American defensive end Vic Beasley.

On first down, freshman quarterback AJ Long rolled right, away from Beasley, and found wide receiver Jarrod West for a short gain. On second down, Long scrambled that way again and was stopped at the line.

And in a passing situation on third down, Long stayed in the pocket to throw while Beasley effortlessly beat Lasker on the edge. He was in the freshman’s face right as he released an incomplete pass. Riley Dixon and the SU punt team were jogging onto the field almost as soon as the ball left Long’s hand.

“(Things) changed dramastically,” said offensive coordinator Tim Lester of Hickey’s short stint on the bench, accidentally combining dramatically and drastically before laughing and correcting himself.

Despite Win Over Syracuse, Clemson Falls in Polls (WLTX)

While the victory against Syracuse marked Clemson's fifth straight win this season, it wasn't enough to push them up in the football polls.

The Tigers are ranked 21st in the Amway Coaches Poll and 22nd in the Associated Press Poll. Last week they were 20th in the coaches and 21st in the AP.

The Tigers are coming off a 16-6 win against Syracuse, where they were led by backup quarterback Cole Stoudt.

'Dysfunctional' Defense Has Venables Smiling (tigernet.com; Hood)

...
Venables said some early Syracuse success had his group’s attention, and the first dysfunctional event of the night popped up.

“It was really more what Syracuse was doing to us. Who's supposed to be pressing and who's not? Getting after each other a little bit,” Venables said. “We got off the field so let me handle that and get mad at all that. You guys can stick together and now you get on and you get off and shut up. It was really more of that. Whether they think they should be working us or not, they've got good players. Frustration was more internally. That's not anything the offense is doing. We were working through our dysfunctional family issues on the defensive side.”

The defense allowed just two field goals to the Orange and Venables said he was pleased with the way the defense performed.

"Obviously, I loved how our guys played. Great effort, good intensity, just took it one play, one series at a time. We were a little bit frustrated there,” he said. “I could tell on the sideline, cause they were having to fight a little bit more than they wanted. Syracuse, they came here to win. I tried to explain it: "Hey guys, look, it's like last week. We have to worry about us and control what we can control, and if we have to go out there and play 100 snaps, then we have to do that." You can't make excuses.

No Excuses (for the Struggling Clemson Offense) (tigernet.com; Steele)

Clemson’s offense has been beset by injuries this season, but offensive coordinator Chad Morris isn’t going to use that as an excuse for the Tigers’ offensive malaise. <p>The offense has scored just three touchdowns in the last 12 quarters, and Saturday’s effort in a 16-6 win over Syracuse was desultory at best. Four turnovers didn’t help, but the offense found enough of a rhythm late to run the last eight minutes off the clock and seal the victory.

Morris said that with all the injuries – and suspensions – the offense is having trouble finding any kind of a groove.

“It's hard to get into any kind of rhythm but our guys - they aren't complaining, they aren't making any excuses and we're not making excuses for them,” Morris said after the game. We've got to get it done. Our job is to put points on the board. We've got guys on scholarship, too, and they fill in.

“Outside of listening to music, I don't know if there is much rhythm right now. That's tough. We did that with a backup center...

One Last Look at Syracuse vs Clemson (PS; Photos, Murray)

TIGERS TOO MUCH
The Orange actually had a halftime lead and looked poised to pull off the upset in Death Valley on Saturday. But then reality in the form of the Clemson defense set in and the Tigers pulled away for a 16-6 victory.

Before looking forward to N.C. State, use the arrow keys above to take a last look back at the loss to Clemson.

5000 Students Give It Their All in Carrier Dome to Determine the Best Marching Bands in New York (PS; Siu)

More than 5,000 high school students, along with an estimated 10,000 fans, packed the Carrier Dome for the New York State Field Band Conference championships Sunday.

Fifty marching bands came to town to compete and determine who is the best. For each band, months of practice all came down to a 7- to 10-minute performance. A panel of 10 judges evaluated each band on its musical and visual presentation.

The results: Complete scores for the competition.

This year's champions include: Union Endicott, Huntington, Phoenix, Jamestown, New Hartford and West Genesee.

Syracuse football freshman S Rodney Williams out for season, WR Keenan Hale steps away from team (PS: Bailey)

According to NCAA bylaw 14.24, Williams is eligible to apply for a medical hardship waiver because the injury was sustained during the first half of the season and he's played in less than 30 percent of the team's regular-season games (12).

In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport.
