The Panthers tumbled to the edge of a losing season on Saturday, falling 40-35 to North Carolina after the Tar Heels' T.J. Logan rushed for a touchdown with 50 seconds to play. It came on a day when James Conner rushed for 220 yards and four scores. Two weeks earlier, Conner had 120 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-28 loss to Georgia Tech. And on Nov. 8, Conner rumbled for 263 yards and three scores in a 51-48 double-overtime setback against Duke. That's 603 yards and 10 touchdowns to show from a star running back over three weeks. Yet somehow Pittsburgh lost all three games. Clearly, the Panthers (4-6, 2-4 ACC) have dealt with a porous defense. But it's still striking as they head into a closing stretch against Syracuse and Miami that they're not in far better shape for the postseason --- if not in contention for the Coastal Division title --- with such a dominant running game. ... Facing the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, the unit held the hosts scoreless and to 36 total yards in the first quarter. The Tar Heels, which entered the matchup having scored 40 or more points four times this season and averaging 423 yards a game, looked lifeless. Pitt took advantage of its opponent’s condition, establishing an early lead on a James Conner rushing touchdown that it would hold for approximately the next 43 and a half minutes of play. That success in suffocating a strong offensive attack began to slip, and didn’t return, ultimately resulting in a 40-35 loss for the visitors, their third straight. It was also the third consecutive game that the defense has allowed the opposition to score 40 points or more and amass 500-plus yards of total offense. Sophomore Tyler Boyd expressed frustration afterward. “Every week we’re toe to toe with an opponent, and it’s ‘We got the win,’ or it comes down to the wire every time. I don’t know what it is. I just don’t like it. It’s rough for me. It’s rough for James [Conner]. I’m a competitor. I love to win and hate to lose,” Boyd said. “Nobody likes losing, and, once you lose consistently, there’s nothing you like about it.” ... While Jecko didn’t take part in any of the three goals scored by fourth-seeded SU (17-5, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) in its 3-1 win over Penn State (16-6, 5-3 Big Ten), her seven saves went a long way in keeping the Nittany Lions at an arm’s length. “She had a lot of really good saves early on,” SU head coach Ange Bradley said. “Jess has been really steady for us all year and experienced to a very young defense.” Her biggest save of the game was perhaps her first and it came 10:26 into the match. PSU senior forward Laura Gebhart was awarded a penalty stroke and stepped toward the penalty spot, staring down Jecko while the goalie’s arms spread wide across the goal. ...[/I] [/QUOTE]
