Can Young Panthers Finish Strong in Final Two Games? (cityofchampions.com; Donahue)
Another must win. Another big disappointment. With their latest loss to UNC, the Pitt Panthers’ bowl chances are now on life support.
Prior to their game at North Carolina, the Panthers (4-6) needed to win two of their final three games to become bowl eligible. The Panthers have not missed a bowl game since 2007. That 2007 season was highlighted by the Panthers spoiling West Virginia’s national championship dreams in the Backyard Brawl.
But unlike 2007, big wins have been hard to come by. After starting off 3-0, the Panthers have gone 1-6 since including 1-4 versus ACC opponents. Their only win versus a bowl eligible team came Sept. 5 at Boston College. That seems like a season ago at this point.
However, when you take a closer look at Pitt’s losses this season, you can’t help but feel a little sympathy for the Panther faithful. Excluding losses to Akron and Georgia Tech, four of the Panthers’ losses this season have been by five points or fewer. That is a tough pill to swallow for the youngest lineup in college football.

Pretty blah week when it comes to the Lambert Meadowlands Trophy, though four of the seven teams in actions were winners in week 12.
We start this week in Happy Valley, where the Nittany Lions became bowl eligible for the first time since 2011 with a 30-13 victory over fellow Lambert Meadowlands trophy eligible Temple.
Penn State is going to a bowl game. I cannot tell you how great it feels to type those eight words. There are plenty of players that were on the roster in 2011 that made the trip to Dallas. But in an honest moment, I am sure they will admit they did not really want to be there. For reasons we all know too well, that team deserved better than ringing in the new year on ESPNU in North Dallas.

Carrier Dome Gets Frozen Transformation (twcnews.com; Vivacqua)
It's a quick turnaround, but crews are hard at work transforming the Carrier Dome floor into an ice rink Monday morning for this weekend's Frozen Dome Classic.
The Dome will make history Saturday night by hosting its first pro hockey game when the Syracuse Crunch take on the Utica Comets.
As soon as the SU men's basketball game against Hampton ended around 6 p.m. Sunday, crews immediately started to get to it.
A team from the Carrier Dome began breaking down the court, pushed floor bleachers about 10 feet back, and began lying down plywood.
Then the company Ice Rink Events took over around midnight and began installing plastic tubing and pipes for the rink. The group is expected to spend the day constructing the rink and then begin flooding water into the Dome Monday afternoon.
"The boards will start to go up and then we'll start the ice making process over the next two days and at some point we'll stop to paint the ice," said Syracuse Crunch Chief Operating Officer Jim Sarosy. "We have to paint the ice white, lay in all the lines, lay in all the logos and everything and best case scenario, by Thursday afternoon, we'll be having a Crunch practice inside the Carrier Dome. How cool does that sound?"

Massive Snow Storm Shuts Down Thruway, Batters WNY and Tug Hill (PS; Montreuil)
Lake effect snow is a rather unique phenomenon. It does occur occasionally elsewhere in the world, such as the Great Salt Lake and the Sea of Japan, but no where gets hammered winter after winter with feet of snow like the Great Lakes region.
Part of what makes lake effect so unique is how it is formed. The mechanics that generate these lake effect snow bands are most similar to thunderstorms and would not be possible if it weren't for the large open (no ice) expanses of water we call the Great Lakes.
How Lake Effect Forms
One of the key ingredients in both thunderstorms and lake effect is 'instability'. Since warm air is less dense than cold air, it tends to want to rise above cold air. When cold air is instead over top of warm air, the atmosphere is said to be 'unstable' and it will act to correct the imbalance through rising warm air.
