Five SU Football Players to Watch in 2015. Is Zaire the Future at Middle Linebacker? (PS; Bailey)
With a somewhat meaningless game against Boston College slated for Saturday at 12:30 p.m., Syracuse (3-9, 1-6 ACC) is finally close to putting a 2014 campaign mired in injuries, miscommunications and coaching confusion in the past. Over the next five days, Syracuse.com will take a look at five of the Orange's most promising hopes for an improved 2015 season.
We'll kick things off with Zaire Franklin, a true freshman linebacker who has started the last two games in the middle and brings smarts and savvy rarely found in such a young player.
The basics: Franklin is listed at 6 feet and 238 pounds. He's totaled 38 tackles this season, playing in all 11 games, to go with three sacks. In his two starts, with sophomore Marqez Hodge sidelined due to a lower-body injury, Franklin has 16 tackles (nine solo).
Why he impresses: Franklin might not be as explosive as Dyshawn Davis or as experienced as Cameron Lynch, but he is reliable. You'll be hard pressed to find him out of position despite having to read offenses and adjust fronts in his first collegiate season. With an offseason of training ahead of him and another Will Hicks boot camp this summer, Franklin only has room to grow.
