Five SU Football Players to Watch in 2015. Is Zaire the Future at Middle Linebacker? (PS; Bailey)

With a somewhat meaningless game against Boston College slated for Saturday at 12:30 p.m., Syracuse (3-9, 1-6 ACC) is finally close to putting a 2014 campaign mired in injuries, miscommunications and coaching confusion in the past. Over the next five days, Syracuse.com will take a look at five of the Orange's most promising hopes for an improved 2015 season.

We'll kick things off with Zaire Franklin, a true freshman linebacker who has started the last two games in the middle and brings smarts and savvy rarely found in such a young player.

The basics: Franklin is listed at 6 feet and 238 pounds. He's totaled 38 tackles this season, playing in all 11 games, to go with three sacks. In his two starts, with sophomore Marqez Hodge sidelined due to a lower-body injury, Franklin has 16 tackles (nine solo).

Why he impresses: Franklin might not be as explosive as Dyshawn Davis or as experienced as Cameron Lynch, but he is reliable. You'll be hard pressed to find him out of position despite having to read offenses and adjust fronts in his first collegiate season. With an offseason of training ahead of him and another Will Hicks boot camp this summer, Franklin only has room to grow.

Scott Shafer should be starting his presser soon, bumped up due to Thanksgiving. Taking question recommendations if you have any.

Shafer said reasoning behind late 4th-and-1 punt at Pitt was field position, hope to force turnover, offensive struggles.

Shafer said he if he could do it again, he's not sure if he would punt. Went with his gut at the time.

Shafer on young talent: "I'm as motivated as I've ever been." Reiterated how proud he is of team, excited about freshman getting reps.

SU head coach Scott Shafer is joining the ACC coaches' teleconference shortly. @PhilDAbb will have updates.

Shafer discussing JuCo players as stopgaps. Mentions Darius Kelly, Wayne Williams and Deon Goggins as successful ones at SU.

Shafer on Syracuse vs. BC: "It's an old Northeast battle... It's a great thing for the conference."

Shafer: "We've been through a rash of injuries that I've never been around in my 24 years."

Shafer on Steve Ishmael: "I've been proud of Stevie and his work ethic."

Shafer says SU is looking into a medical redshirt for senior linebacker Luke Arciniega. Waiting to hear back from the NCAA.

Scott Shafer on Steve Addazio/BC: I think they do it with integrity. They play a tough brand of football.

Shafer says SU/BC won't find themselves head-to-head for 5-star recruits the way Clemson/FSU do, but doesn't mean they won't go after some.

Shafer says he's never been around so many injuries in a season before.

OK, I'm intrigued. Sounds like the beginning of an admission that his gut could be wrong on those kinds of decisions. Stick with it, SS, keep mulling it.

I want to give him a chance, but this type of thinking scares me. He likes the chances of forcing a turnover better than gaining one yard.
