Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., the Pierce (Woodland Hills, Calif.) College tight end became the first player to officially join the Orange's 2015 class. Dunkelberger, who will have three years to use three seasons of eligibility, signed his national letter of intent at school as part of junior college national signing day, he confirmed in a text message. While the majority of Syracuse's class will be filled on Feb. 4, Dunkelberger was able to put pen to paper first. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound target initially received a tip from former SU wide receiver Corey Cooper that the staff was looking for a traditional tight end in the first week of November, and wound up verbally committing to the Orange on Nov. 24. Dunkelberger expects to contribute immediately as part of offensive coordinator Tim Lester's tight end-heavy offense. "We talked about the direction that the offense is going with 12 personnel, being centered around tight ends and the fact that they want to see a tight end get 40 catches in a season," Dunkelberger previously told Syracuse.com regarding a conversation with Lester. "The direction they want to go just seems like an exciting place to be at this time." ... Other Onondaga County Chooses Gilbane Firm to Build Amphitheatre, Work to Begin Soon (syracuse.com; Knauss) Onondaga County has selected a general contractor, Gilbane Building Co., to construct a concert amphitheater on the west shore of Onondaga Lake. County officials are still negotiating a contract with Gilbane, so the final cost of the project is uncertain, said Martin Skahen, the county executive's chief of staff. The county Legislature approved $49.5 million in bonding to pay for the project. Ryan McMahon, chairman of the county Legislature, said he has been assured by County Executive Joanie Mahoney that Gilbane's price for the amphitheater will not exceed the bonding amount. "Work will begin immediately once a contract is in place,'' Skahen said. Mahoney has said the county plans to host a concert at the new facility by August 2015.
