[I]When Evan Adams was 7, his father gave him a book of Latin derivatives.

The gift wasn't typical reading material for a first-grade boy, but Ernest Adams shared his interests with Evan, reading with him every night before bed. Sometimes it was a novel, other times a comic book. Always, though, they read together and many times Evan took their most recent reading onto Ernest's garbage truck while riding along during 4 a.m. shifts the next morning.

In the Adams household, education was an emphasis and a college degree was a requirement. Because of that, Evan quickly developed an extensive vocabulary and love for learning.

"As long as you put your mind to something, your heart to something, you could do it," Evan said his parents told him. "I took that to the most literal sense."
