Is the Early Signing Period a Positive or a Negative For Syracuse Football? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

At long last, it appears college football will be moving to add an early signing period for recruiting. Basketball's had this for years, and it's had a huge impact on the process -- allowing for earlier recruiting to pick up a bit (see Syracuse's own recent efforts), while also allowing schools to pump the brakes well before National Signing Day.

The College Commissioners Association will be voting on the matter this week, and if it passes, the early signing period will start this year, from December 16-18. In that three-day stretch, players will be able to sign binding commitments to their respective schools of choice. This would remove some of the hoopla around National Signing Day in February, while also preventing some late flips (largely to SEC schools), allowing schools more time to recover from decisions not in their favor and letting kids simply get on with their senior years, decision made.

At the link above, SB Nation's Kevin Trahan, Peter Berkes and Bud Elliott dive into the positives and negatives overall (for schools and players). But what about for Syracuse football, in particular?

Positives

Classes could be well locked-in going into bowl season: Think about what happened in 2012/2013, when Doug Marrone's exit in late December/early January led to a mass exodus of a promising recruiting class. In a similar situation, a school would be able to retain players that signed during the early period in December.

Which Team is the ACC's Dark Horse? (espn; Shanker and Hale)

Votes for NC State and Pitt...

The oddsmakers are high on Florida State, Clemson and Georgia Tech in the ACC this year, but there's some depth in the conference that could push those favorites. With that in mind, ACC bloggers David Hale and Jared Shanker picked a dark horse candidate for a conference title that might be a wise wager before the season kicks off.

Shanker says NC State is a sleeper: I've written this before, but I'll reiterate that the Wolfpack are a team that could generate a surprised look among people scanning the end-of-the-season standings. NC State will need to experience a great deal of growth and some luck to make a run for an ACC title, but there's enough pieces that, when coupled with a manageable schedule, make NC State a worthy dark horse candidate.

Jacoby Brissett was inconsistent, but his brilliance was displayed in several games in 2014. It shouldn't be forgotten either that last season was Brissett's first as a full-time starter. Although he's older than most first-time starters, he deserves the opportunity to grow like all signal-callers.

Surrounding Brissett is a strong stable of running backs, andShadrach Thornton rarely gets tackled for a loss, which puts Brissett and the rest of the offense in solid second- and third-down positions. That should prove advantageous for an inexperienced receiver corps as it plays against a defense weary of both the pass and rush.

BC Football Recruiting 2016: Sure Does Feel Good (bcinterruption.com; Rubin)

Regardless of how his career turns out, Eagle commit Ethan Tucky represents the next step of Steve Addazio's Master Plan. That's pretty awesome.

There's a solid chance you never heard of Ethan Tucky prior to this weekend. But when he committed to Boston College on Sunday, regardless of your opinion, regardless of your thoughts, he became something of an example for the foundation of the Steve Addazio construction project that began when The Head Dude took over after the 2-10 campaign in 2012.

In all fairness, Tucky may not pan out the way we're hoping. There's no guarantees anywhere, and there's certainly no guarantee that the kid could turn into the next Luke Kuechly or Mark Herzlich. A four-star recruit, he projects to be an immediate impact, the type of recruit who makes his presence known on day one.

His recruiting profile describes a "relentless motor." He has incredible length at 6'2", 215 pounds, and he has the potential to add more strength and speed to that size. He's a solid tackler, capable of closing on ball carriers from any angle. While not quick immediately off the ball, he has an incredible next gear, and his effort on every play echoes the names of the past. He has the potential, right off the bat, to be an impact player from the beginning with room for improvement in areas BC excels at extending. He's the type of guy who can be the Next One in a long line of incredible linebackers we've seen pass through The Heights.

Sonic Sets Tentative Opening Date for Clay Restaurant, Update on Plans for DeWitt (PS; Doran)

Sonic Drive-In has set a tentative opening date sometime in September for its Clay location - the first one to open in the Syracuse area, according to the franchise owner.

Plans for the Sonic Drive-In on Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt are proceeding smoothly now after the initial difficulties, said Fran DeSimone, the franchise owner. DeSimone said he expects the Clay location to be open first.

In May, DeSimone had said he was going to cancel the project in DeWitt because of difficulties with the town planning board. But he was able to work out the obstacles at a subsequent meeting with planners, and the project is back on.

Clay officials have approved the special permit for a drive-thru for the new Sonic at 6808 Route 11 and 5431 South Bay Road, on a site between the two roads. Two parcels are being combined for the site.

An existing 2,655-square-foot former bank is being converted to the restaurant, along with a proposed 2,655-square-foot addition in the bank. A vacant office building will be torn down to make room for it, according to the plans.
