I know its the off topic item but I am very excited about this. Its been a long time coming but maybe we can get back to being the University we were poised to be before Cantor took over. A small history for those unaware, Shaw had built a solid foundation for SU to be a leader in research in the 2000s after resurecting SU from the cost cutting on the education side that Eggers did between 1971 and 1991. Then Cantor arrived and took all of those sound investments and defunded them pushing us backwards in research and out of the AAU. I was there in the transition we had some professors lose funding and start job hunting basically, as well as shrinking quality and quantity of masters and PHD applicants. We lost our start and we have a long way to go to catch back up but this is great news. The truth of it is, Excellent professors will come to SU for less money if they know they have FULL university backing to fund their research, which will end up paying a portion of their salary and feed their academic goals. More qualified masters and PHD candidates will apply to work with these professors which means better TAs and possibly more research breakthroughs in their better excecution as Research Assistants. More success in research and development from that research generates the possibility more startup buisness, techinical conferences and longterm prestige. Good work has been done by those who perservered over the last decade but its time to turn things back on and get roaring. The Best part...this research grant funding doesn't come solely from alumni and student pockets as much of the spending over the past decade has there are private and public research grants all over that are up for competition. Back on the road to somewhere. It may be time to open up the purse strings Ive had closed so tighly during the Cantor era, we just need to make sure we don't waste all the investments she made in the community in our haste to drive that road, Since they are built though many need reorganization for efficiency. Positive Rant Complete.
