Cole Murphy on Groza List, Riley Dixon Shunned on Ray Guy List (TNIAAM; Keeley)

If I told you that a Syracuse Orange kicker on the 2015 roster was named to a preseason award watch list, you probably weren't thinking it would Cole Murphy. The walk-on sophomore was named to the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, annually given to the nation's top kicker.

Make no mistake, this is no "everyone gets a gold star" situation. Murphy is one of only thirty kickers, thanks to his 2014 performance. As a freshman, Cole was 13-of-16 (81.3%) on field goal attempts and made two 50-yard boots.

Murphy also found out that he will become a scholarship player next season. Rejoice, Murphy family.

Now...to the other matter at hand. The Ray Guy Award is handed out to the best punter in the nation each year. They just released their watch list, consisting of twenty-five punters.

Heisman Trophy favorite and American sweetheart Riley Dixon is not one of them.

TNIAAM Podcast: Blackknight and John Cassillo Discuss SU QBs, Recruiting & NBA Free Agency (TNIAAM; Lyons & Cassillo)

Syracuse football is less than two months out, and that means we can actually start talking previews in earnest -- of course, without giving EVERYTHING away about our full-season projections (don't worry, we'll get there in August). Today, the focus is on some of the QBs on the roster, and what some of their futures may hold.

Also in this episode, John Cassillo chats with Dan Lyons to discuss Orange recruiting, NBA free agency, and of course, talk beer. Some of the larger talking points:

2015 SU Opponent Preview: Clemson Tigers (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange football season is getting closer! (It's 56 days away, for those keeping track) And that means we're prepping for this all-important 2015 season at SU. Each week, we'll preview another team on the 2015 Orange schedule, from week one through week 13. Today, we continue with the:

Clemson Tigers
School: Clemson University

Mascot: Tigers

#BRAND Slogan: "Hear Us Roar"

Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "DISRESPECK." "&$K YOU, DABO."

Recommended Blog: TNIAAM Shakin the Southland

Conference: Atlantic Coast Conference

Coach: Dabo Swinney, 8th year. There's plenty to criticize with Dabo from our end, but.. overall, you have to admit he's done a pretty impressive job at the school which has typically failed to string together this much consistent success. Recruiting over the last five years is l4th-best in the country -- again, pretty amazing considering the schools they're mixing it up with each and every time. A ton of that is due to some phenomenal skill/luck hiring assistants. With one of his best (Chad Morris) off to new opportunities in 2015, we'll see if he can hit the nail on the head yet again.

2014 Record: (10-3) (6-2)

Recapping Last Season:

Minus a ton of weapons on the offensive end, expectations at Clemson were largely hinging on a dominant defense last season. And it certainly delivered, carrying an injury-riddled group on the other side of the football. Those fireworks everyone was used to from Morris's attack were completely gone, instead replaced by the fireworks of a lethal pass-rush. Brent Venables has worked wonders since taking over right after the Tigers' disastrous Orange Bowl experience a few years back. And 2014 was the exclamation point on the project he's undertaken.

SU Football Sets Date for Fan Fest Scrimmage; Men's Soccer Exhibition Scheduled Beforehand (PS'; Bailey)

Syracuse fans will get their first chance to see this year's Orange football team in action at the annual Fan Fest scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 15, SU Athletics announced in a press release on Thursday.

The intrasquad scrimmage will start at 6 p.m. and follow a men's soccer exhibition against Georgetown at 4 p.m. The event is free and gates open at 3 p.m.

Food, refreshments and prizes will be available and fans will have an opportunity to register to win prizes, including two seats in the Athletics Department Suite for a 2015 home game.

Other activities in the Manley complex include SU volleyball and women's soccer players running activities at Wohi Field, inflatable bouncers for children and a merchandise trailer. The men's soccer team will sign autographs after their exhibition and football players will be available to fans at selfie stations after the scrimmage.

SU fans will also be allowed to try on the 2015 Orange football uniform inside the Ensley Athletic Center and pose for photos with former football standouts on the plaza outside of the Ensley Center.

He had the bad sense to transgress after the star QB skated in a high-profile case.

It's like the NCAA's punishment regime. "Jameis Winston sinned, and Dalvin Cook was arrested."

The 2014 Wake Forest offense was young. It started three freshmen — including quarterback John Wolford — and four sophomores.

Accordingly, it was also terrible. The Demon Deacons ranked dead-last in the country in total offense, averaging 216.3 yards per game — 52.7 yards worse than second-to-last SMU.

A lot of those struggles were blamed on the youth. An unseasoned offensive line couldn’t create any running lanes. Wolford was never able to string consistent drives together.

That inexperience isn’t something that’s going to get any better in 2015, though. Second-year coach Dave Clawson joined the David Glenn Show on Friday, and he said that the offense will be featuring even more young players than it did last year.

“It’s a year later, but not a lot has changed. The two sides of the ball are so different. A year ago, we were older, we had a lot more talent and a lot more experience on the defense. We were outmanned on offense,” Clawson said. “This year, we’re still much older on defense. I do not project a freahman starting on our defense … Offensively, you’re looking at a situation that over half of the starters could be freshmen — redshirt or true. But I do believe that these are talented players. These are guys capable of playing in the ACC.”

When Clawson walked into the job last season, he said flatly that Wake Forest didn’t have the talent, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, to compete in the ACC. Although the Demon Deacons will be young, he believes the talent level is rising rapidly.

“On offense, it’s going to be wide open,” he said. “You’re going to have guys who, right away, are playing 55, 60, 80 snaps a game. It’s concerning, but it’s also exciting about how good these guys are going to be and how quick their learning curve is going to be.”

Clawson added that several freshmen will play on the defense, but they’ll provide depth. They won’t be relied upon as key players, unlike the offense.

You can hear Clawson’s entire spot with the David Glenn show below.

Wasn't Sliders popular with the students? Surprised it went out of business.
