Welcome to Yellow Pig Day!
The Yellow Pig is believed to have originated with mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly, while they were students at Princeton University in the early 1960s. They began listing interesting properties of the number 17, and somehow the 17-eyelashed yellow pig was born.
Michael Spivak has since written many famous math textbooks which contain yellow pigs. Spivak's references to yellow pigs are not always direct; some textbooks contain references to Chinese policemen. David Kelly runs Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics (HCSSiM), a summer program for mathematically-talented high school students, all of whom have been introduced to the "cult" of the Yellow Pig.
References to yellow pigs are not uncommon among mathematicians, particularly those who attended HCSSiM or worked with Spivak or Kelly. Several mathematicians maintain collections of yellow pigs.

SU 2015 Opponent Preview: NC State Wolfpack (TNIAAM; Cassillo)
The Syracuse Orange football season is getting closer! (It's 49 days away, for those keeping track) And that means we're prepping for this all-important 2015 season at SU. Each week, we'll preview another team on the 2015 Orange schedule, from week one through week 13. Today, we continue with the:
NC State Wolfpack
School: North Carolina State University at Raleigh
Mascot: Wolfpack
#BRAND Slogan: "Think and Do"
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "State Your Complaint." "Wuf."
Recommended Blog:Backing the Pack
Conference:Atlantic Coast Conference
Coach: Dave Doeren, 3rd year. Doeren's head coaching career started with a pretty fantastic two-year stint with Northern Illinois that saw him go a combined 23-4 with a top-25 finish and an Orange Bowl berth. Year one at NC State was on the rougher side at 3-9. But last year saw a turnaround... in W-L record at least. This has nothing to do with Doeren, but a laughable non-conference slate allowed the Wolfpack to start 4-0 before losing four straight. The team would finish with eight wins and look like a squad on the rise. We'll see if that actually comes to fruition.
2014 Record: (8-5) (3-5)
Recapping Last Season:
State started out on a roll, as noted above. The offense played well in four straight wins over the dregs of college football, but then floundered against four tougher ACC defenses to net out a 4-4 after eight. Syracuse appeared to be the cure for whatever ailed an inconsistent Wolfpack squad, though, as the team wrapped up the year at 4-1. It's tough to really say which team was the "true" State following an up and down year, but with a promising finish and some gaudy QB numbers forJacoby Brissett, the story is certainly brushed positive for all onlookers.

What Mark Coyle Needs to Know About Syracuse Lacrosse (sujuiceonline.com; Brannigan)
Syracuse’s new athletic director Mark Coyle has a lot on his plate as he settles into the 315. He’s sure to evaluate each of the programs, coaches, facilities and his department’s staff.
Chances are good he doesn’t know much about lacrosse. None of his previous stops in athletics administration—Boise State to Kentucky, Minnesota and Miami—had a lacrosse program. Coach John Desko even joked at Coyle’s introductory press conference that he considered quizzing his new boss about how many players are on a lacrosse field.
In case you’re wondering, Mark, it’s 10. There are a few other things you need to know about Orange men’s lacrosse.
The team wins. 11 national titles, 17 trips to the NCAA championship game, 22 consecutive Final Four appearances from 1983-2004, five undefeated teams. The football team is your revenue maker; the basketball team excites; the lacrosse team wins. But …
It’s not winning as much. The team hasn’t won a national title since 2009—a drought that is causing much consternation among the faithful. It’s also missed the Final Four in five of the past six years. Because …
The team and its fans are adapting to the new lacrosse landscape. The days of 22 straight Final Fours and championships coming in regular fashion are over. The sport has grown beyond its historical Northeast and Mid-Atlantic base at both the high school and collegiate level, making recruiting that much harder. Syracuse is still the premier program in the country, but it has much more competition now. Which is why you should…

New Area Code to Join 315 in CNY: 10 Things to Know (PS; Knauss)
The state Public Service Commission today ordered the activation of asecond area codein the Central New York region served by 315. The new area code is necessary to prevent a shortage of new phone numbers that could otherwise develop by the first quarter of 2017, the PSC said.
Here's what you need to know:
How soon will CNY get a second area code?
The new area code is likely to go into service roughly 18 months from now, by late 2016 or early 2017. Phone carriers need time to implement the change. The fastest a new code has been put in service is 13 months, said John Manning, director of the North American Numbering Plan Administration.
Regulators will want the new area code in service before 315 is scheduled to be depleted, which means no later than the beginning of 2017. However, the PSC indicated today that it may slow down introduction of the second area code if the next NANPA forecast in October indicates that area code 315 will last longer than early 2017.
When will the new area code number be announced?
NANPA will issue a new CNY area code soon after the Public Service Commission formally requests it, Manning said.
How will 10-digit dialing be phased in?
As phone carriers prepare to implement the new area code, the Public Service Commission will require a "permissive dialing period'' of at least 11 months, during customers can place a local call by dialing the customary seven digits or by dialing 10 digits (area code plus 7 digits).
