Speculation: Notre Dame and Texas to ACC? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Yesterday, an interesting bit of information came across Twitter -- information that most of us (maybe all of us) hadn't really heard before. From the always-reliable McSources:

It's timely to talk about it since a lot of folks around college football HAVE really been annoyed at Notre Dame lately (more so than usual), with regard to their cushy, independent situation. What we didn't know, however, was the bit about Notre Dame being locked into the ACC should they choose to join a conference before 2027.

For those who forgot all of the stupid conference realignment terminology, the ACC was seen as more vulnerable than other leagues for a spell because they just had a large exit fee, not a grant-of-rights that gives media revenues to the conference to dole out to member schools -- instead of just the schools. Notre Dame joining pretty much ended that talk, and now this information sets that in stone, as no school would have much drive to leave the ACC with Notre Dame in the fold.

So IS Notre Dame going to join the ACC full-time at some point? I'd argue yes, especially if they're shut out of the College Football Playoff for conference champions once or twice. But then that brings up the important question of who the ACC would bring in with Notre Dame to balance out an unwieldy, 16-team league. This is the part where UConn fans salivate, before crumbling in a heap.

The answer is Texas.

Devon Clark Commits, But SU Football Doesn't Accept (thejuice; Cheng)

Here’s a bizarre one: On Wednesday, 2016 Osceola (Kissimmee, Fla.) HS safetyDevon Clarke tweeted from his account that he had committed to Syracuse as recapped by Oregon Live. But that tweet was ultimately deleted and sources later told Rivals that the Syracuse football staff hadn’t been in touch with Clarke in weeks. What happened here? Perhaps Syracuse is waiting for Eric Burrell, a four-star safety from Maryland, according to Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey. Stay tuned…

Syracuse football fans were rejoicing this week when 2016 New Jersey defensive end Jamal Holloway selected the Orange. Holloway tells NJ.com’s Todderick Hunt why he picked SU: (1) Being close to home; (2) The football tradition at Syracuse (he specifically mentioned No. 44); (3) Familiarity. As to the latter, Holloway will be going to Syracuse with teammate DyMelle Parker, who committed to the Orange earlier this year. “Just to have somebody there that I know, that I’ve always played with, there for another four years, will be great,” Holloway said.

To round out football recruiting for the day, At their request, this network is being blocked from this site.’s Mike McAllister reportsthat cornerback Cycoby Burch will be making his college decision on August 28. Along with Syracuse, the Florida product is considering West Virginia, South Florida and Indiana.

On the hardwood, 2016 shooting guard Kevin Huerter is consideringSyracuse, Notre Dame, Michigan, among others. Throw Maryland into that mix as well. 247 is reporting that Huerter will be taking a visit to Terp Nation this weekend.Syracuse already is at its limit for scholarships (plus one) with Tyus Battle on board, and Huerter has an offer strictly as a 2017 commit if he wants to spend a year at prep school. Michigan received a commitment from Ibi Watson, so that may complicateHuerter’s recruitment with the Wolverines as well

Tim Daoust Talks Orange Defensive Line's Ability (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

We've discussed the Syracuse Orange defensive line before, and expressed some concern. Then we expressed more concern when Wayne Williamsdeparted the program. The issue, of course, is depth and the fact that SU has very little at the position for 2015. With this in mind, Syracuse.com's Nate Mink spoke to Tim Daoust about those depth issues and the D-line group as a whole.

He leads off with what we knew: freshman Steven Clark is going to have to play at defensive tackle this season. But on the bright side, he's actually looking up to the challenge. Daoust says Clark is far and away the most physically advanced freshmen on campus right now, though Tyler Cross is the best athlete they have. We shouldn't expect either to be forced into more than they can handle, however -- at least by design. Said Daoust:

"It would be hard if you bring in an 18-year-old kid and tell them to go play 50-plus snaps a game...

... Pray for me if that happens. That's not the plan. There are three good defensive tackles here right now that have played in my mind. Yeah, they didn't play in the fall, but Kayton and Chris can play. I don't need to get to a game to know that Kayton Samuels and Chris Slayton can play football. I've seen it."

So that's a relief. While guys like Clark and Cross have the potential to be very good players for the Orange, it's best to not put them so far in over their heads that they're doomed to failure.

***

Daoust says "(he's) not sleepless at night over the defensive tackle situation" and says that SU is "not short on ability" on the defensive line, which I'd tend to agree with. If he can get the stated goal of 8-10 players into the rotation there, the Orange may not need an all-world performance from any of them to keep the unit's production at a similarly high level to previous years.

40 inch, 20 Pound Lake Trout

Fishing Buddies Haul in "Fish of a Lifetime" on Skaneateles Lake (PS; Coin)

Mike Cook and and Kevin Blewett knew they had a big fish on the line Sunday morning on Skaneateles Lake.

It wasn't until the 40-inch, 20-pound trout surfaced that they realized what a "monster" it was, Cook said.

"It didn't even fit in the net," Cook recalled. "We just bear-hugged it in the boat."

Cook and Blewett had fished the lake for years, but they'd never caught anything as big as what Cook called "the fish of a lifetime."

"Every few years we seem to hear of a mythical giant lake trout from the depths of Skaneateles Lake," said Cook, of Oswego. "I guess it was our turn."

The pair started trolling the lake in Cook's bass boat about 5 a.m., hoping to catch 15- to 18-inch trout typical of Skaneateles Lake. In about 200 feet of water, they released downriggers to a depth of about 60 feet, using 1.5-inch Alpina diamond spoons on 6-pound test leader.

"We were having a pretty good morning," he said.

The morning got much better about 8 a.m. as they neared Five Mile Point on the east side of the lake.

"I grabbed the rod and knew it was a good fish, so I gave it to my buddy," Cook said. Blewett, of Baldwinsville, fought the fish while Cook reeled in the other lines to avoid tangling.

The trout dove to 100 feet during the 20-minute battle, Cook said. When it finally tired and came near the surface, Cook said, "it looked like 'Jaws' underneath the water."

Did Axe pick really pick the starting RB, the second leading returning receiver, one of two players who represented the SU team at the ACC kickoff meetings and a starting safety as breakout players?

Maybe Axe needs to break out a dictionary and find out what breakout means.

Yesterday he said "unless the coach knows something we don't..." - referring to talent on the dline.
