Welcome to National Macadamia Nut Day!

Did you know that a single macadamia tree produces nuts for over 100 years? The first macadamia nut trees were found in the rainforests of eastern Australia thousands of years ago by the Aborigines.

Today, they are a widely popular nut enjoyed by people across the globe. Though macadamia nuts may be toxic to dogs, they are very nutritious for humans to eat. High in protein and carbohydrates, these nuts also contain calcium, iron, potassium, and dietary fiber. Macadamia nut oil is also found in cosmetics and other skincare products because of its oxidative stability.

Celebrate National Macadamia Nut Day by simply snacking on them or baking a batch of macadamia nut cookies!

Perfect Tailgating Weather for Syracuse vs Rhode Island (PS; Montreuil)

The Syracuse Orange will open their 2015 football season at home against the Rhode Island Rams at 7 p.m. Friday evening in the Carrier Dome. It should be a great evening for tailgating before the game, with plenty of sun and warm, but not oppressive temperatures.

The temperatures at 5 p.m. will be around 81 degrees with mostly sunny skies and a light and variable breeze. For the next two hours, weather conditions will hold steady with just a slight drop in temperature. By kickoff, it should be around 77 degrees outside.

After the game wraps up, skies will be mostly clear with calm winds. Temperatures will have dropped to around 71 degrees at 10 p.m.

Time Warner Reverses Decision, Will Televise Rhode Island Game After All (PS; Murray)

Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will televise Syracuse University's football game against Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Friday at the Carrier Dome.

The game will be on channel 323 statewide for Time Warner Cable customers.

The company announced the decision Thursday night in a press release. Brent Axe spoke with Time Warner earlier Thursday and the company said at the time the game would not be available.

The game will also be available on ESPN3. If you're watching through ESPN3, you'll need to log in to the WatchESPN website or download the WatchESPN app for your mobile device. You'll need the online sign-in info for your cable or satellite provider to access WatchESPN.

Syracuse vs Rhode Island Battle of the Blogs (rhodyrampage.com; Ascoli)

Rhody Rampage: In our opponent preview, we referred to last season as a “dumpster fire” for Syracuse for a host of reasons. How would you assess 2014 for the Orange, and what do you think/hope will be different this year?

Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician: No qualms on the term “dumpster fire” whatsoever. It’s perfect. The team was oft-injured, had no watchable offense to speak of and looked incredibly bad against nearly its entire schedule. Again, there are excuses baked into the previous sentence, so perhaps 2015 shows us improvement by default. Syracuse has a new offensive coordinator and a new scheme, QB Terrel Hunt is back and healthy and the schedule’s a bit easier than last year’s. All look like a recipe for an improvement in the wins column, if nothing else.

RR: That segues nicely into our next question. Terrel Hunt is obviously a guy that the URI defense has to be ready for. What should they be expecting?

TNIAAM: As long as Hunt’s back to his old level of mobility and strength (likely), expect him to hit some of URI’s defenders in the mouth. He’s not a finesse runner at all — rather, he’s just a bruising, power guy. Built like a linebacker, he moves slower, but can and will bowl you over. The Orange are incorporating some speed option into this year’s offense, and a host of hybrid backs to keep opposing defenses distracted from just keying in on Hunt. The only way these new elements work, though, is with an improved passing game. He won’t beat you downfield much, but with a better incorporation of the tight end position, there should be plenty of options for him to throw to at short and middle distances.

RR: Much like Rhode Island, Syracuse is mainly thought of as a basketball school. But what should Rhody football be preparing for when they step into the Carrier Dome?

TNIAAM: An interesting crowd that will span from your local fans who will be complaining about the Friday night kickoff, to students who are back on campus and will likely pre-game this one pretty hard. The Carrier Dome can get very loud when it’s full, and painfully quiet when it’s not. This is a team and fan base that are dying to prove last year was a fluke and that the program is back to being a consistent postseason team. Obviously this is a bit of a mismatch, so… prep yourself for that and try to get young players some work that could pay dividends later during your CAA schedule. You guys like beer? Or is anyone actually going up to see the game? Plenty more to “prepare for” if that’s the case…

5 Things to Watch for in Syracuse Home Opener (PS; slideshow)

1. Syracuse redshirt senior quarterback Terrel Hunt suffered a season-ending fractured fibula in SU's fifth game last season. With a simpler, more personnel-friendly offense to command, can a healthy Hunt lead SU to a more productive year? He and offensive coordinator Tim Lester have say his accuracy has improved and his ability to read coverage is excellent. We'll get our first look Friday night.

Oklahoma State Survives a Scare in Mount Pleasant, Outlasts CMU 24-13 (espn; Chatmon)

It was ugly but Oklahoma State survived.

The Cowboys knocked off Central Michigan 24-13 at Kelly Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Michigan on Thursday night. Here's how it happened:

The game turned when … Central Michigan rolled down the field to score and take a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter. Oklahoma State's offense seemed to wake up once it could look up at the scoreboard and see Central Michigan leading. Urgency returned to the Oklahoma State offense as the Cowboys scored a touchdown, missed a field goal, scored another touchdown, punted then missed a short field goal to put together productive, lengthy drives on four of its final five possessions to lock down the win.

How the game was won: Gundy's squad wouldn't have survived this scare without a stellar performance from Oklahoma State's defensive line. Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush was constantly under pressure as seven different Cowboys recorded a tackle for loss, including three from defensive tackle Vincent Taylor. The play of the Oklahoma State defensive tackles -- particularly Taylor, Eric Davis and Darrion Daniels -- was one of the bright spots for the Cowboys in an otherwise average showing.

What a win means for Oklahoma State: We could look back upon this game as a key wakeup call for Oklahoma State or a precursor of things to come. The Cowboys offense, particularly the running game, was lackluster throughout much of the game, leaning on the defense to carry the load. But as bad as things looked at times, the Cowboys head home with a win and plenty to work on, with an eye on getting the offense up to standard.

Wake Forest Opens Season By Thrashing Elon 41-3 (PS; AP)

John Wolford passed for three touchdowns and ran 70 yards for another score, and Wake Forest opened by routing FCS member Elon 41-3 on Thursday night.

Wolford was 20 of 27 for a career-high 323 yards and threw touchdowns covering 10 yards to Cam Serigne, 30 yards to Cortez Lewis and 27 yards to Chuck Wade before exiting in the third quarter.

The Demon Deacons are above .500 for the first time in second-year coach Dave Clawson's tenure and set highs for points, total yards (591) and yards rushing (203) under him.

Freshman Matt Colburn had a 2-yard rushing touchdown and Mike Weaver kicked field goals of 28 and 32 yards.

John Gallagher kicked a 45-yard field goal for the Phoenix, who had just 151 total yards. Picked last in the CAA, they were down by 24 points before they crossed midfield for the first time.

For Wake Forest, it was an encouraging start to Year 2 for Clawson. The Demon Deacons finished last season 3-9 with an offense that was the nation's worst, averaging just 216 total yards.

Even with a roster full of freshmen, things certainly clicked against an FCS opponent coming off a 1-11 finish.

This was the Demon Deacons' highest-scoring game since they hung 49 on Army in 2012. They rushed for 134 yards in the first half — more than they had in any full game last season.

B1G off to another bad start with Minnesota losing the TCU and Michigan losing to Utah.

Vanderbilt loses to Western Kentucky. Nice victory for Jeff Brohm, who has a great chance to become the next UL HC when Petrino has his next scandal.

UConn got a nice win, upsetting Villanova in the Rent 20-15.

Wake looked impressive against Elon.

Saw some of the CMU-Okie State game. They moved the ball well against Oklahoma State and their defense was impressive too. Surprised Okie played them in Mount Pleasant. CMU's OL could not pass block, otherwise they would surely have won the game.

CMU's offense was led by vet QB Cooper Rush, who ran for 51 yards and a TD, averaging 6.1 ypc. He was also 28-41 passing for 225 yards...lots of short throws underneath coverage. They will nickel and dime us down the field all game long.

This is not going to be an easy victory for Syracuse.

I agree about CMU for sure, although TCU looked sluggish along with OK State. Raises some questions about the Big 12. After all, mighty Baylor lost to Michigan State in the bowl game last season. I think the B1G, even with the two losses, showed well.
