Welcome to National Cinnamon-Raisin Bread Day!

The invention of cinnamon-raisin bread has been attributed to Henry David Thoreau, though there have been published recipes for bread with raisins in it since 1671. Since the 1400s, breads made with raisins were made in Europe. In Germany stollen was a Christmas bread. Kulich was an Easter bread made in Russia and panettone was made in Italy.[13] The earliest citation for "raisin bread" in the Oxford English Dictionary is dated to an 1845 article in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine.[14] In England, raisin bread became a common element of high tea from the second half of the nineteenth century.[15] In the 1920s, raisin bread was advertised as "The Bread Of Iron", due to the high iron content of the raisins.[16] The bread became increasingly popular among English bakers in the 1960s.[17]

First Look: CMU Needs Its Passing Attack at Syracuse (mlive.com; Butzin)

The good news is Central Michigan has played well the first two weeks of the season taking Oklahoma State to the brink in the opener before rolling FCS Monmouth last week.

The bad news is the Chippewas hit the road for the first time this season with a tough Syracuse squad looming on the horizon.

The Orange have used a strong run game to down their first two opponents and look to use it for an encore against CMU after trouncing the Chippewas 40-3 last season in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at Syracuse.

THE FACTS ABOUT SYRACUSE
Location: Syracuse, New York
Mascot: Otto the Orange
Colors: Orange, white and navy
Last meeting: Syracuse won 40-3 last season in Mount Pleasant
All-time series: Syracuse leads 2-0
Coach: Scott Shafer (10-15, 3rd)

BY THE NUMBERS
2.5 – CMU has one of the best run games in the conference last season, but it is off to a bit of a slow start in 2015 averaging just 2.5 yards per carry as a team. Jahray Hayes leads the running back group with seven carries for 32 yards at a 4.6 yards per carry clip. Martez Walker is averaging 3 yards a carry, while Devon Spalding has been held to a 1.6-yard average.

68.8 – What they lack in offensive production has been made up for so far through the air where junior and three-year starter Cooper Rush is completing 68.8 percent of his passing with an efficiency rating of 136.8. In two games, he's thrown for 553 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

LB Jason Cabinda is Playing for Nyeem Wartman-White (philly.com; McCarthy)

From the way Jason Cabinda talks about football, it’s evident how passionate Penn State’s sophomore linebacker is about the sport. But he really lights up when he talks about his biggest inspiration.

“My mom is a saint. She has really sacrificed the most. It sounds cliche that I wouldn’t be here without her, but it’s absolutely true,” Cabinda said Tuesday. “Growing up, she worked two jobs. She wasn’t home a lot. When she was home, she was taking me from practice to practice. She never missed my games between football, AAU basketball, school ball, lacrosse. I played a lot of sports and she was there … she did it all.”

All those hours of practice have paid off rather quickly for Cabinda since he arrived in State College last year.

Originally, 2014 was going to be a redshirt season for the Flemington, N.J. native, but injuries led him to get playing time in Penn State’s game against Northwestern. He went on to log 17 tackles in nine games.

Coaches have called him the hardest hitter on the team.

“I come from a place where toughness is really huge,” Cabinda said. “And I think being a hard hitter is really about how tough you are, just wanting to defeat the guy in front of you. Never lose your one-on-one battles.”

Demand and Prices Low for Syracuse Football Tickets: Matt's Memo (cnycentral.com; Mulcahy)

The market place is ruled by supply and demand. In the world of third party vendors Stub Hub has become the New York Stock Exchange of sports ticketing. It is a tangible gauge of interest in a team. Are they a buy, sell or hold? Right now the Syracuse Orange football teamis a sell. Stub Hub proves it.

The Carrier Dome has hosted two home games for Scott Shafer's club this season. Both have attracted sparse crowds. You see more of the orange padding in the seats than you do fans wearing orange. Yet, still the team is playing hard. It is 2-0. It has won the games it was expected to win. Here comes Central Michigan.

Would you like to go to the game? Are you concerned tickets are too expensive? They are not. A quick check of Stub Hub proves it. There are 300 tickets available right now on that site alone. You can sit in the lower bowl for $8.00. More typically ticket holders are asking for $20 to $30 to sit on the 100 level.

This is the week to buy. Next week is another story. The highly ranked LSU Tigers come to town. Sellers are asking for $100 and up for those same seats. That's a sign demand will rise for a big name opponent. Prices for the Clemson game are also strong. Pittsburgh's visit to the Dome in October is more modestly priced. But, where is the week to week affection for our hometown Orange? Does there have to be a strong opponent to generate enthusiasm.
