Welcome to Columbus Day!

More cities are recognizing Native Americans on Columbus Day this year as they revive a movement to change the name of the holiday to celebrate the history and contributions of indigenous cultures around the country.

As the U.S. observes Columbus Day on Monday, it will also be Indigenous Peoples Day in at least nine cities for the first time this year, including Albuquerque; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Olympia, Washington.

Encouraged by city council votes in Minneapolis and Seattle last year, Native American activists made a push in dozens of cities in recent months to get local leaders to officially recognize the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day. Their success was mixed.

USF Player Arrested on Gun Charges Hours After Bulls Beat Syracuse (PS; Carlson)

South Florida offensive lineman Benjamin Knox was arrested on gun-related charges at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, about nine hours after helping the Bulls beat Syracuse on Saturday.

Knox, a backup offensive lineman, was arrested and accused of firing a gun into the residence hall where he lives, according to a report in the Tampa Bay Times. The report said there is no indication that Knox was firing at a person or group.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, after being called for a report of gun shots, police searched the campus, finding an empty gun case and ammunition in a car that belonged to Knox. He was eventually found in his dorm room and the gun was recovered.

A four-star ESPN recruit from Deland (Fla.) High School, Knox is a redshirt freshman. He was suspended from all team activities following the arrest.

Injuries have plagued Georgia Tech through the first half of the team’s 2015 season, and more starters went down with injuries in the team’s 43-24 loss to Clemson on Saturday.

Offensive tackle Errin Joe, safety Demond Smith and cornerback Chris Milton left the matchup against the Tigers after getting banged up. None of the three players returned, and according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the severity of each injury is still unknown.

Saturday was just the latest example of the Yellow Jackets losing key players. Wide receiver Michael Summers, A-back Broderick Snoddy and defensive linemen Pat Gamble and Rod Rook-Chungong are all starters who have missed games this season. In addition, multiple second-stringers — quarterback Tim Byerly and A-backs TaQuon Marshall and Qua Searcy — have also been sidelined for at least part of the year.

Georgia Tech, which has made 18 consecutive bowl appearances, will need to win four of its final six contests in order to reach a bowl this season. The team will face Pittsburgh, Florida State and Virginia before entering a bye week after Halloween.

11. Syracuse Orange (3-2, 1-0). Just when you think there is a surprise team ready to emerge out of nowhere in the ACC, Syracuse goes ahead and loses at USF. The Orange’s first road game of the season proved to be a much tougher task than anticipated, and a trip to Virginia next week ought to play a large role in the Orange’s potential bowl hopes.

I cannot fathom how Wake and BC are ahead of us. We should be in the bottom half. But not below them.

Wake is ahead because they showed signs of life this weekend and beat BC.
