Welcome to National Doughnut Appreciation Day!
Move over beignets and cafe au lait, today is National Doughnut Appreciation Day. (Flipping through Steff Deschenes' "Eat the Year" book there are a lot of Doughnut Days, so pace yourself.)
For some it's a rare treat. For others it's a religion. Every Sunday my grandparents used to take me to Shipley's doughnuts in Alexandria, Louisiana, after mass. My favorite: doughnut holes.
I never ventured much past the regular glazed. To this day I feel a bit overwhelmed going into a gourmet doughnut place, although I tip my hat to the genius to decided to put bacon on a doughnut.

WR Steve Ishmael Doing All He Can to Turn Syracuse From Underdog Into Frontrunner (DO; Schwedelson)
Steve Ishmael’s greatest weakness was his weakness. He lacked the physique of a college football hopeful.
Then a high school freshman, a 162-pound Ishmael went to make a block on a defender 40 pounds larger. He was pushed backward so easily the defender taunted him.
“‘Man you got to go to the weight room,’” Ishmael said the defender told him. “I took that so personal. Ever since then, I’ve literally been in the weight room every day taking it serious.”
His older brothers were bigger than he was too. Their size reminded him of the same thing that the defender did.
With Ishmael’s strength a perpetual work in progress, his college aspirations were nonexistent until he received his first offer from Western Michigan. It was a shock to Ishmael in his junior year, something he never expected and hardly believed when it happened.
“I was like, ‘Wow. Me?’” Ishmael said.
Ishmael eventually chose Syracuse over offers from Oregon and Tennessee in order to help a program trying to turn things around — a desire to help that defines him. He increased his weight from 178 pounds as a freshman last season to 205 now and is the Orange’s (3-5, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) leading receiver with 397 yards, 26 receptions and four touchdowns, three of which have come in the past four games.
Ishmael wants to be a part of what makes Syracuse great. He accepts the current struggles, because ingrained in his decision to play for SU was his desire to turn things around and make an underdog a frontrunner.

SU-Louisville Scouting Report (thejuice; Cheng)
The Courier-Journal’s Steve Jones calls in to chat about Syracuse’s upcoming game with Louisville on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast hosted by SNY.tv. Editor in Chief Brad Bierman then joins in to talk about Scott Shafer’s job security and a look toward the basketball season.
Here are the highlights from the show:
Wes Cheng: I say 2015 Louisville football. You say, what? What’s led to some of the early struggles for this Louisville team?
Steve Jones: I would say up and down. It’s a tale of two different halves of their schedule and the difficulty level of the first half of their schedule. They started 0-3 and 2-4. But the second half of the season is much, much easier. They have Wake Forest, Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt and Kentucky. There’s no really imposing opponents in there, and they could potentially win all of them, which would totally shake up how the season goes.
WC: How do you see Saturday’s game shaking out?
SJ: I would expect them to be able to put a lot of pressure on Syracuse and contain them. Louisville has a shaky offensive line, but they’re improving. I’m thinking Louisville will win another low scoring game. They’ll get out of there with a 21-14 kind of score.

SU Football vs Louisville: See Our Picks, Make Your Predictions (PS)
The Syracuse football team will take on Louisville at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
It's time for our predictions. Hop below in the comments and offer your picks.
Brent Axe
A good part of my Friday night last week was spent watching Louisville vs. Wake Forest. (I know. What a party animal I am). I kept thinking the whole time watching that game how Syracuse should beat the Cards and I think they will. Look for the Orange D to get the best of a weakened Louisville offensive line and give the offense a few more chances to score than usual. Orange wins an ugly one. SU 23, Louisville 21
Stephen Bailey
The Orange defense has been suspect at best at the end of games this year. And with Parris Bennett and Luke Arciniega banged up, a unit that already struggles to tackle could be without two of its most reliable players. SU should be able to hang with the Cardinals, but I haven't seen enough to believe it can win in crunch time. Louisville 31, SU 24
Nate Mink
Syracuse desperately needs a victory, and this is a Louisville team in transition with a young offensive line and quarterback situation. Syracuse hasn't lost six straight games since Greg Robinson's first season in 2005, when it lost nine straight. Dick MacPherson and Ben Schwartzwalder had six-game skids, too, though. SU 24, Louisville 23

Syverud Weighs In On Status of Veteran-Focused Medical School (DO; Palmer)
...
Syverud said he and other city officials visited Albany to present the city’s Upstate Revitalization Initiative proposal. Seven regions in upstate New York will submit ideas spurring economic development in their area, with three winners receiving $500 million each. Syracuse’s proposal mainly focuses on economic inclusion — an area that has come into consideration after the city was slammed with the highest rate of extreme poverty between blacks and Hispanics among the nation’s largest cities.
But Syverud cautioned senators that there is no guarantee the city will edge out its competitors.
“They’re very good proposals, so it’s not assured that we will win,” he said.
The university could play a part in the city’s economic revitalization if it chooses to pursue a veteran-focused medical school, he said. If the school and the National Veterans Resource Complex are built, Syverud said it would result in the creation of hundreds of jobs and large-scale economic activity for University Hill and beyond.
The hope is to establish the city as the national leader in veterans resources, he said, and the next step will be to consult with various university stakeholders to see how the medical school stacks up to all of SU’s other planned initiatives.
“There’s no other complex like this in the nation,” Syverud said. “The vision would be that we’re the one-stop shop for research and service issues and education related to veterans.”
Syverud said the winners of the URI will most likely be announced in New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address in December.
