Welcome to National Apple Pie Day!

Apple pie is the quintessential American dessert! However, apple pie wasn't actually invented in the U.S. Rather, it was invented in Europe sometime during the 14th century. The first apple pie recipe was printed by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1381 in England. The ingredients in the recipe included apples, spices, raisins, figs, pears, and saffron which was all enveloped in a pastry crust.

Several Dutch apple pie recipes date back to the late 15th century. They were similar to the English recipes, except that they added a scoop of ice cream placed on top before being served. This tradition of “apple pie à la mode” eventually caught on in America. Today, many people continue to enjoy their warm apple pie topped with ice cream!

To celebrate National Apple Pie Day, bake a delicious apple pie or pick one up at your local bakery to share with your family. Just don't forget the ice cream!

Reports: SU Football Locked In On Dino Babers as Next Head Coach (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

The search for the next head coach at Syracuse has taken another twist.

Just over a day after Scott Frost and the Orange abandoned discussions Syracuse might have a new #1 target.

A reporter in West Lafayette tweeted out that it's a done deal with the Orange, but has since deleted that tweet.

Babers is currently preparing Bowling Green for the MAC Championship Friday night. He is 17-9 in two seasons as head coach of the Falcons. Babers is renowned for his "Fast" offense which will remind some of Syracuse's offense in 2012.

USA Today's Dan Wolken is the first to report the news:

Analyzing UCF's Hiring of Scott Frost (underdogdynasty.com; Short)

After a bit of false start, it turns out that Oregon Ducks Offensive Coordinator Scott Frost is in at UCF.

It was widely reported a few days ago that Bowling Green Head Coach Dino Babers was expected to take the job in Orlando (including by the SB Nation Mothership. Uh. Our crytstal ball was murky). Babers denied the reports, leading some to speculate that it was a matter of timing (Babers' buy-out dropped by $100k on December 1, and Bowling Green is playing in the MAC Championship game).

All of this ended up being wrong, of course.

Tuesday morning, the news broke that Frost was hired to steer theKnights out of the colossal wreck that the George O'Leary era had ended in. The hire comes as a surprise: Frost was not among the namesreportedly interviewed this past weekend, nor the topic of muchspeculation (though he was linked to other head coaching gigs, including at Syracuse and Iowa State).

Frost's resume is pretty solid, though brief. He was the starting quarterback on Nebraska's 1997 national title team, spent six years in the NFL, and transitioned into coaching in 2002. He spent time as a graduate assistant at his alma mater and then at Kansas State. In 2007, Frost became the linebackers coach at Northern Iowa and then added "co-defensive coordinator" duties the next year. Both years, Northern Iowa made it deep into the playoffs.

Clemson and UNC Worried About Turnovers (sltrib.com; AP)

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney still can't wrap his head around it: The Tigers routinely lose the turnover battle and yet win the game.

"It's a concern," Swinney said. "The good news is we're 12-0 so we don't have to play perfect to win."

There been little evidence of perfect play on offense at times for No. 1 Clemson (12-0, No. 1 CFP), which faces No. 8 North Carolina (11-1, No. 10 CFP) for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship on Saturday night.

The Tigers have committed more turnovers than their opponents in six games this year, including the past three weeks. Quarterback Deshaun Watson, tailback Wayne Gallman and receiver Artavis Scott all coughed up the ball against South Carolina to help the hapless Gamecocks score their most points this season in a 37-32 Tigers' win.

But it could catch up with the Tigers.

Swinney knows it's an issue, noting teams that commit two more turnovers than their opponents win just 16 percent of those games.

"It's happened to us six times," the coach said of his team beating the odds. "I don't recommend that."

Swinney worries a seventh time losing the turnover battle could be costly.

OptiGolf Owner Expects Indoor Golf Facility to Reopen (PS; Tampone)

The owner of OptiGolf at Destiny USA expects the indoor golf venue to reopen today or tomorrow.

Mark Wekara said the location should reopen by Thursday morning at the latest. It could be up and running again later tonight, he added.

The state seized OptiGolf for nonpayment of taxes Tuesday and the business is currently closed. OptiGolf owed about $14,000 in sales and income taxes at one point, but has been paying off the debt.

The balance was down to about $9,700 this afternoon, said Cary Ziter, a spokesman for the state Tax Department.

The debt began growing in 2013 and continued through this year, Ziter said.

Wekara said he would be able speak more about what happened tomorrow.

"What has happened is nonsense," he said.

The 8,300-square-foot simulator facility offered 96 different courses to choose from, a private room, a full bar and bar menu and several big-screen TVs for sports watching. It opened in 2012 and was one of the first tenants announced for the expansion's entertainment-focused third floor.

The tax department generally tries to work out payment plans for businesses with back taxes before resorting to seizures. The department also sometimes reaches deals with businesses after they're seized, allowing them to reopen.
