Welcome to National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day!

Lurking in the murky depths of many people’s wardrobes is a colorful, brash and (in most cases) highly embarrassing novelty Christmas jumper which, were it not for Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, would probably never see the light of day. Launched in 2011, this annual celebration, which is growing in popularity every year among adults and children, is not simply an excuse to parade humiliatingly-unfashionable seasonal knitwear featuring Rudolph, Christmas puddings and Frosty the Snowman; it is a light-hearted and enjoyable fundraising event with a serious aim in aid of Save the Children.

In schools, colleges and offices Christmas jumpers are donned to raise money for the global charity that works to combat premature death among children from easily preventable diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia, and whose mission is clinically summed-up in the slogan ‘No Child Born to Die’.

Could JUCO WR Alonge Brooks be Next?

SU Football Recruiting: the Not So Dead Period (TNIAAM; Pilatzke)

After the recruiting dead period began on Monday, Syracuse has picked up two commitments and has had one recruit flip to another program.

Liam O'Sullivan, a 6 foot, 6 and a half inch offensive lineman from Park Ridge Illinois flipped his commitment from the Cincinnati Bearcats to the Syracuse Orange. Carl Jones, an athlete from Lakewood who Syracuse is targeting as defensive back, verbally committed on Monday. Cam DeGeorge, the first Syracuse commit of the 2016, flipped his commitment to the Connecticut Huskies on Monday as well.

Neru N'Shaka, a new Syracuse target who was offered by Syracuse on Saturday, de-committed from the University of Virginia on Wednesday. N'Shaka is a 5'10" 180 lbs. wide receiver who plays for Hallandale High School in Florida. He runs a reported 4.4 40 yard dash and is a perfect fit for a slot receiver in Coach Babers' offense. His primary recruiter at UVa was Chris Beatty, who is now Syracuse's running backs coach. N'Shaka has a visit set up to Toledo and it is anticipated he will set up a visit to Syracuse as well.

Another wide receiver to keep an eye on is junior college recruit Alonge Brooks. Brooks is a 6'3" 205 lbs. receiver for Riverside Community College in California. Brooks will be graduating this semester and would be eligible to join the Orange in the spring. Wednesday was the first day for mid-year recruits to sign their National Letters of Intent. Here's what Brooks had to say on Twitter about his interest in the Orange:

SU Football: About the New Orange Defense, the Tampa-2 (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Since Dino Babers was hired, we've done a lot of work looking into the spread offense he'll bring to the Syracuse Orange. But what we've failed to spend much time on is what happens on the defensive side of the ball. Part of that may be because new defensive coordinator Brian Ward is not coming aboard until Bowling Green wraps up its bowl game. And the other might just be Babers's offensive focus.

But we SHOULD really talk about the defense a little. So why not today?

Dan and I got the ball rolling on the podcast this morning, so maybe start there. But going beyond that, let's get to talking about the Tampa-2.

What's the Tampa-2?
A defensive scheme originated by the Tony Dungy-coached Buccaneers and Monte Kiffin (but also based on principles from Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" days back in the 1970s). SB Nation's Bucs site, Bucs Nation, does a great job of explaining it, so I'd head over there for the most thorough analysis.

The key elements of the scheme, though, from the Football Times in 2006:

"The Tampa 2 scheme relies heavily on extremely speedy defensive players and a hard hitting secondary that loves to gang tackle. Further, the Tampa 2 expects everyone to tackle in the run game; the safeties, the cornerbacks, and everyone in between. The Tampa 2 is run out of the usual 4-3 defense, but every player is responsible for his own gap up on the line and drops a middle linebacker into deeper coverage."

And more, just to show the differences between the "Tampa-2" and the 4-3:

"In a standard 43 defense, the middle LB stays underneath the safeties and covers short underneath routes and helps in run defense. In the Tampa 2, the middle LB is expected to drop into deep coverage in the middle essentially converting a Cover 2 into a Cover 3. This protects against the deep pass very well and changes the assignments. Every player is now responsible for less field, and the deep routes are covered better. Only the other two LBs and the two CBs have to cover slightly more ground."

Uh Oh: 2-3 Feet of Snow Possible This Weekend in Tug Hill Area (PS; Coin)

The lake effect snow watch issued this morning has been upgraded to a warning Friday evening through Sunday morning.

Up to 3 feet of snow could fall on Tug Hill this weekend.National Weather Service
Up to 3 feet could fall in areas of the Tug Hill, the National Weather Service said. Winds of up to 25 mph, with gusts of 35 mph, whipping off Lake Ontario could cause blowing snow and reduce visibility to less than a quarter-mile.

"Localized bands of heavy lake effect snow and blowing snow will result in snow-covered roads and very poor visibility," the warning said. "This includes Interstate 81 between Central Square and Adams."

The snow could start Friday night and continue into Sunday morning. Areas likely to get heavy snow are southern Jefferson County, northern and central Oswego County, and central and southern Lewis County.

I'll wager we are on the list next year - this time for the largest RISE in attendance among P-5!
I wish that were true but I seriously doubt it. The Babers hire was a popular one among the diehards but from what I am seeing and hearing, it doesn't mean much to the casual fans.

I think they are going to have to see a markedly improved offense and some wins posted on the board before they start to come back in serious numbers.
