Welcome to National Baked Alaska Day!

It’s National Baked Alaska Day! Baked Alaska is a decadent dessert made with ice cream, sponge cake, and toasted meringue. Although the name “Baked Alaska” did not emerge until the 19th century, this dish is part of a long culinary tradition.

The concept of serving cream and cake together dates back to the Renaissance. The cooks of the era were the first to adorn their baked goods with a whipped topping. This laid the foundation for Baked Alaska, but it does not account for two of the dessert’s distinguishing characteristics—temperature and texture.

The Chinese were the first culture to cook pastry over an ice cream filling, which results in a delicious combination of hot and cold components. Credit is also due to the American physicist Benjamin Thompson, who experimented with the heat resistance of beaten egg whites and discovered how to make meringue.

SU Football Recruiting: Adrian Killins Sets Decision Date, Jaquwan Nelson Gets Soul Stolen in Georgia? (PS; Bailey)

Florida athlete Adrian Killins will announce his final decision on National Signing Day, according to Mike McAllister of CuseNation.com.

National Signing Day, Feb. 3, marks the first day a Class of 2016 recruit can sign a binding agreement with a school.

Killins, a Central Florida commit from Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.) High School, took an official visit to SU this weekend. He also visited Iowa State last weekend and has been offered by Louisville, West Virginia and Miami, among others.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Killins is rated three stars and the No. 65 running back in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He projects as a versatile weapon who can line up in the slot or backfield and would bring top-end speed to the program.

Killins lists his 40-yard dash time at 4.31 seconds and is a state champion in the 200 meters. Of the 21 commitments in the Orange's Class of 2016, two fit a similar mold to Killins: athletes Moe Neal and Sean Riley. Jo-El Shaw is a more traditional running back while Devin Butler can play outside and in the slot.

Mississippi State Feels Good About Picking Up Stewart Reese on Monday (clarionledger.com; Paulling)

...
Buzz: Lashley took his third and final official visit to LSU over the weekend. The longtime Mississippi State lean planned his official visits to help him come to his decision, and those close to his recruitment are adamant that the four-star offensive tackle isn't a done deal for MSU.

Could the Bulldogs still land Lashley on Tuesday? Of course, and it would help round out their offensive line recruiting in a very big way. But the 6-foot-7, 310-pounder has committable offers at all three schools and Alabama has made a very strong push towards the end of this cycle to garner a commitment from the West Point product.

Mississippi State is in good position to pick up a commitment from three-star offensive guard Stewart Reese on Monday and possibly flip South Carolina commit Lloyd Cushenberry in the next few days. Lashley is a must have for the Bulldogs, and MSU is doing everything it can to keep him in state as its future at left tackle.

Snow Plow Driver Re Blizzard of 1966: 'I'll Be Honest. I Was Scared.' (PS; Pucci)

The snow was beginning to fall when an Oswego County snowplow driver was getting ready for work.

He wouldn't return home for three days.

Ronald Cottet was among those who shared their stories of the Blizzard of 1966 during a50th anniversary party held Sunday afternoon at CNY Arts Center at the Cayuga Community College campus in Fulton.

It was Sunday, Jan. 30, 1966 and Cottet, of Constantia, was putting chains on the tires of his Chevrolet pickup truck for the drive to Parish, where the highway department was located.

The 24-year-old Cottet made it to Parish for the start of his 7 p.m. shift. His first assignment was to clear the roughly 25-mile stretch of Route 11 to Route 49 from Parish to Cleveland, a small village along Oneida Lake.

By then, the snow was heavy, but the wind was not too strong.

But by the time Cottet reached Central Square on the return trip, it was a whiteout. Unable to see in front of him, Cottet got out of the plow truck, found a payphone outside a bank and used his elbow to barge open the folding doors sealed shut from the wind and snow. The only light was the faint glimmer of street lights shining through the blowing snow.
