For those questioning Ben Lewis' speed

watch the overhead replay of the two long TD's. See the big white kid catching up to Estime and Steve? See that 17 yard run by Lewis? Lewis is fast enough and is right where he should be.

For sure. He's not real elusive - but he will run someone over. He needs to be on the field.

Watching a couple of replays when Dungey was scrambling and had nobody open to throw to, it appeared that our WRs (incl. Lewis) just ran their routes and stopped, making no apparent attempt to get open. I believe the ACC announcers even commented that they need to learn to run back towards the QB when that happens.

Having said that, I was impressed with some of the downfield blocking by our WRs (esp. Estime).

Very good point. Saw the same thing. I think part of it is getting used to Dungey as a quarterback, the other part is probably coaching.

Wr blocking is night and day

Estime came back a bit on the 89 yarder. But it's a good point. Helping your QB by coming back on a scramble and downfield blocking are hugely under-rated aspects of being a wideout.

Not questioning his speed, but sure would be nice to have a 6'3" possession receiver on the edge for the quick out routes with Brisly in the slot.

Yeah, when I suggested he gets moved, it wasn't anything against him. I just think he'd help us more at wideout. Easily would be in the top 3 rotation.

But with Erv out, we can't re-teach the position, so he needs to stay there.

What made McNabb special was when a play was breaking down he would run and point to a spot on the field a receiver could run to. A former player that this was the case there and the players knew it going forward.

He always had decent speed for a kid his size. I dont think most people question his straight line speed. He lacks elusivness. Can he gain top level speed after a stopping to make a cut, hesitation move or a juke? those are the things required to make people consistently miss. I like Lewis, and his role will start to show as the season progresses.

This is exactly how I feel about Lewis. His straight line speed is fine, but I hate when they try to run jet sweeps with him. It barely works with our 4.4 guys. Also, his hands are being wasted. I think he's the 3rd-4th best receiver on the team. Certainly better than AC, Avant, or the young kids.

Ish was excellent blocking as well. I think he knows that to have any chance of playing on Sundays you have to block.

Yah I agree. Straight line speed isn't that important. Braxton Miller we've all watched him and know he can get hawked by the defense from behind from his time as a qb--- now he is fast but not that fast, but his wiggle is out of this world. So he can wiggle himself into open space, and when you're in open space all you really need to do is run diagonal or keep zig zagging so you won't get caught from behind... now if you're too slow this technique won't work.

That's the main difference between Ben and Erv and the "lack of speed" which may in fact be an aberration. Against LSU (obviously) and other teams this will really hurt us
