Forced TOs

I was thinking during our game that with all the running teams we have played the last few years it really is amazing how few fumbles we force. Watching that ugly game Thursday night the one thing you do admire from that team is they cause fumbles. SU has 19 fumbles recoveries in the last 28 games. For reference the NCAA leaders the last two years had 20 recoveries in 13 games. And that other team has 31 recoveries in their last 28 games.

Not only that, we are not any better at forcing INTs. SU has 22 of those in the last 28 games. The NCAA leaders the last two seasons had 27 and 24 INTs on the year. So again the best teams are getting more in one year than we have in 2.25 years. That other team has 31 INTs in the same span.

So in total they have 62 TOs forced while we have 42. That is a big difference. We need to find a way to get the ball back more often. Being 64th in TOs gained (2011) and 94th (2010) isn't a quality you strive to have.

Reminds me of our 2000 defense, which was outstanding in every way, statistically, except that they didn't force turnovers.

Then Dwight Freeney became the human strip sack machine in 2001 and the rest was history.

God I miss the days when we forced turnovers and had great specials.

Yeah it would be nice to not have to travel the length of the field every time in order to score.
