Thought I'd give a little summary of the Rams in preparation for Tuesday's game:
Fordham is extremely undersized, even for an A-10 team. Coach Pecora will likely play a 4-guard lineup to keep his three bigs from getting in foul trouble early.
The guards:
Branden Frazier, a senior was Fordham's most consistent scorer last year. This year, he's in more of a point guard role with the various shooting guards they have at their disposal. Mandell Thomas, a Rochester kid, is the most athletic player on the team and can hit shots, drive, defend well, and out jump most players. He 's a lot of fun to watch. Getting Jon Severe, 2013 New York State POY, was a huge coup for Fordham. In the season's first game against St. Francis, he had 28 points shooting 7-10 from 3. He's a scoring threat every time he has the ball. Bryan Smith is a very good, but streaky shooter. If he plays like he's capable of, he's the second best player on the Rams.
The bigs:
Fordham was dealt a blow when their 6'10" recruit Manny Suarez was deemed a partial qualifier. All three bigs Fordham has are foul prone and struggle defending outside the paint. The fourth "big" is a 6'5" freshman who played mop up minutes versus St. Francis. Travion Leonard and Ryan Rhoomes both have range shooting the ball, while Ryan Canty is more of a back to the basket kind of player. Canty has a mean streak and does a bit of trash talking, which tends to get him on the ref's bad side. Cuse should have no issue on the interior.
Bottom line: Fordham will have to sink threes to stay in the game, and Cuse should be able to overpower them in the interior.
