Mac could find under-the-radar recruits that could really play. Shafer, yes, has improved recruiting a little, but there are no difference makers of the kind Mac found.
Mac had an OC who had a plan. In fact, for that era, the offensive scheme was revolutionary and took advantage of the players on the roster and the dome environment. Shafer doesn't have any of this.
