Dick Beyer who is now 88 years old might not have much more time left and is in poor health. Played for SU in the 50's and was on the 1953 Orange Bowl team. He is better known as the professional wrestler "THE DESTROYER" or "DOCTOR X".

That's really sad. I've met him a few times; he's a great guy. I wish the best for him and his family!

RIP Mr. Beyer.

Never thought I’d see a Roy Lucier tweet on Syracusefan.com

He must have had a lot of friends because I knew this earlier today from my Facebook feed - big wrestling industry fan mourning the loss.

What we would consider Hulk Hogan and The Rock in this country, he was over in Japan in the 60's and 70's. Even to this day in Japan if you mention Dick Beyer 95% of the Japanese people know who he is. After his wrestling days over there he was a star on the biggest variety show in Japan. (imagine 15 years ago The Rock being a judge on American Idol when American Idol was the biggest thing on TV). That's who Dick Beyer was and why he was so popular world wide but especially in Japan.

He was a superstar athlete at SU. As a wrestler he was undefeated his senior year and he was a starter on the 1953 Orange Bowl team. After college he was an assistant coach for SU football as well. I hope SU honors him before one of their football games this year or maybe puts a decal on their helmet or something for the upcoming season. Dick Beyer really was a big deal and even though it was a very long time ago was a big deal for Syracuse University Athletics.
