Might be true for some fans - but I think if that's all you see you are missing out on a huge chunk of what makes college sports so great. I love the stories about how the kids mature, or how they came from nothing to grab a college education, or how they think of themselves as brothers on and off the field. Shafer rightly sees it as a chance to use football as a way of becoming a man, good citizen, successful, etc. Winning will always be the most important metric for fans... But I'm glad that even in a season like this one - that perspective on life is learned. If my son was going to play college football, I'd be looking for an environment that will help him become a better, stronger person.
