Sidibe and Marek have a problem with foul trouble. Some is self-inflicted (with poor decisions or control at times) but I feel like they are constantly trying to avoid fouling but still getting called anyway. i think there are several things at play here. 1. when players try not to foul and then don't do it perfectly...the refs give them a shorter leash. Incidental contact by a player who is trying not to foul seems to get called much more often than when a player is super aggressive all the time, imo. Many times these SU bigs are merely standing straight up with hands in the air getting run into and getting fouls called on them! super frustrating, for sure. plus...this lack of trying to play defense (block the shot) results in a higher % of and-ones than otherwise. 2. it is game state driven. when a certain team has been given a lot of fouls or when a team has a lead...it seems the refs call fouls based on game state...they try to keep games close and try to even out fouls throughout the game. so the SU defenders need to be xtra careful at certain points in the game. basically there are certain times when the ref is going to call a foul no matter what the defender does...on the road, or when it looks like a foul on tv, for example. overall I would say the stand straight up in the air strategy is not working. its not preventing fouls from being called and its not stopping teams from scoring inside. i think at this point the refs have kinda zeroed in on marek and sidibe somewhat and the narrative needs to change. i think they should try to stop with this hands straight up no defense approach and just play it stragiht up and see what happens. either way...need to find a way to keep marek in the game next season for sure (if there is a season).
