Fran / Players Postgame Presser | Pitt

Fran and McCord need to own the loss. Fran because the team did not seem ready emotionally or schematically. Fran and his crew got taken behind the woodshed last night and it is not the first time this season.

McCord - bad protection, no separation, no run game, etc - he was horrible from snap 1. Second play missed OG wide open, no protection issues. Same with first pick 6. Also last night especially, his pinwheeling in the backfield made bad protection worse. He's the best QB we have had here since Nassib. He has received accolades for winning us games this year, and rightly so. That said he has been fortunate on some dropped picks this year, and he now has 4 pick 6's. Last night he was a deer in headlights with happy feet. He needs to be better - much better. As does the OC who I had high regard for early in the season, but now am thinking we may need to upgrade.

Massive game against Va Tech - players and coaches need to bounce back. Good coaches coming down the pike - Mora, BOB. We need to be better prepared.

well , they certainly did manage to dig themselves that 6 foot hole he alluded to...

I'd feel so much better if Fran acknowledged the fact that coming off a bye is a factor. He's denying it but between this and Stanford it seems obvious. This makes me fear it could be a multiple year type of problem.

It's best not to read too much into post-game comments. Emotions are raw and no one has had time to process the outcome.

I do hope Fran doesn't truly believe the "ball just didn't bounce our way" comment that he repeated a few times. Yes, a couple of the picks were fluky, no doubt. But 3 of them were flat out terrible throws. Beyond that, the O was a disaster, particularly the run game. OL got manhandled, WRs were blanketed all night, and we got out toughed all over the field.

IMHO without the insane amount of pick sixes we still lose that game. More closely, of course. But Pitt had our number. The reasons for that need to be addressed, not just hand waved away as bad bounces.

Can't blame McCord too much for the fact that the WR's had so much trouble getting separation. The Pitt secondary was stuck to the WR's like glue. I'm no DC but compare Pitt to SU. The SU secondary consistently gives a huge cushion. I'm assuming the difference is because Pitt is so much faster.

On the other hand, McCord has a track record of starting slowly, especially after a bye week. His accuracy was bad.

There are going to be setbacks with Fran's program. It sucks but every step is not going to be forward. Keep the faith.

Once again Fran nailed it. Guy is an excellent leader as far as im concerned. Pitt had our number and their D played great. Kyle was off which made for a horrible night. But. No quit, No excuses, onto the next game.
I fully expect Syracuse to bounce back and play well against VT which on paper is a better team than Pitt.
In my opinion he handled this defeat extremely well. He is 100% the right person to lead and build our program which he is doing from the inside out.

Of course, it needs to be addressed but you don't address those issues 30 minutes after a game in a press conference.

Did you seriously say we need to upgrade the OC position?

Fran does very well with these PCs. We stunk. It’s frustrating it continually happens to us year after year in nationally televised games. But I liked how he owned it. That’s all I know right now.

Id prefer he learn from it as well as own it. Accountability is an admirable trait but the ability to learn quickly is far more valuable. 2 bye weeks, 2 bad performances without much mid-game adjustments in either game.

Emily at 11:40 asks what the messaging is to the team after a loss like this.

Would have been funny if Fran said 'so you want me to answer this question a 3rd time?'
I heard that and thought the same thing. Where the hell were you during the previous questions Emily? Hers may have been the worst performance of the night

Bit aggressive; she’s just trying to do her job man. But that definitely wasn’t the worst performance of the night.
