Players worth millions $$$$ to their pro clubs are regularly released to play in matches for their home country team for regional tournaments and world cup qualifying, etc. It's called international duty.

Players get injured playing on international duty all the time and are subsequently also injured when they return to their pro club.

There's a whole insurance industry built around insuring them and their clubs if the player gets injured on international duty.

Obviously, not exactly apples and oranges since we're talking about college players that have yet to be drafted professionally, but I thought I read that some sports agencies are insuring players for bowl appearances now and sanctioning them to play with the player and the agent getting a payout if the player is injured in a bowl. I do not know for sure however. It was something I read in passing somewhere, but I really don't know if it's occurring with any frequency at this point.
