Free Student Tix and Transportation for USC...

Great idea. Hopefully the SU student body will take advantage of this. They should have made one stipulation; students have to wear orange to board the bus.

Need to pull out all these stops. Not going to help the bottom line at all but perception has to be better. Don't know what kind of bump there will be with this student deal or the groupon 1/2 price deal, but it would look ugly with less than 30k sold.

This has been in the works since the spring. I think there are 275 spots available so it probably won't be a major attendance spike, but it'll be nice to have the student there.

That's a lame attempt. SU should have dozens of buses available for the game.

Dozens? How much demand do you think there is for this?

Its an excellent gesture by the University and if there is demand, I'm sure they'll pull together more transportation and freebies.

I would hope there'd be more demand than 275 students.

Have you been to a home game the last decade?

About 35 games over the last 10 years, I'd say.

I would think getting 400 students would be a reasonable goal. They're not playing Rutgers, and the game is at MetLife. We all know SU does a poor job of promoting these type of things.

Actually, I think the student support at home games has been decent. Could be better.

I will continue to support the program, as I know you will. But it's a long road back to respectability, and I'm not sure it will ever be achieved.

To be clear, I'm fairly certain any student season ticket holder can get a ticket for the game, but there are only the five buses.

I knew the answer to the question.;) You've been a great fan of the program, as have many on these boards.

But I think its pretty tough to expect more than a few dozen of our students to take a 4 hour bus trip (free or not).

As a student, I went to the Wisconsin game down at Giants Stadium and I don't recall there being many students. Also, my tickets and bus certainly weren't free. So I applaud the athletic department for doing all they can to increase student involvement. I think they would gladly accommodate more students if there was more demand.

Only problem I have with it (other than the fact that there probably are students who have already paid for tickets and transportation) is that they wait too close to gametime to announce it. Kind of like waiting until this week to announce that the NW game is an Orange-out.

Yes, that I agree with but the students have only been on campus for a week so maybe that's their excuse. I'm sure they came up with this on the fly seeing how tickets aren't selling like hotcakes.

They could have alerted the students two months ago via electronic mail.

now thats what i like --the typical syracuse--upstate ---glass half empty---where's my valium reply----way to go!!!!

Agree. It is great they are doing it but why wait so long? Why screw the kids who had the initiative to get their own tickets and their own transportation, the backbone of the student section? It seems even when they do a nice thing, they screw it up as well.

Still, it is a lot better to have done something rather than nothing at all.

Pretty sure they are north of 40k now...(overall tix sales)

BK, do you happen to know if ESF students will be treated the same as Syracuse students in this case? We're both football/basketball season ticket holders.

I would assume so.

Anyway, all five buses got filled in under an hour and a half, and there are still students buying tickets to presumably hitch a ride down.

Get what you are saying - but the kids who bought tickets were obviously going no matter what (and presumably can afford it) so why not reach out and help the kids who weren't going/able to go? Could only help to get them to come to the next home game.

Kinda of the same argument as when they promote $10 tickets well after most have purchased tickets - sure it hurts those slightly who already paid but in reality it helps everyone to have more butts in seats.

I hear what you are saying as well, but when you consistently sell to your best customers at one rate and then sell the same product to others, much later, for a significant discount, it sends a powerful message to your best customers that they are making a mistake buying early and paying the full non-discounted rates.

It is as if they are actively trying to discourage people from buying season tickets. It is a horrendous practice.

You're right, guess I was thinking of it as a short term thing helping out but in reality it has become a constant occurrence which I can see causing a problem long term. Goes back to the whole value argument.

I just wish we didn't have to resort to gimmickry to get people to be excited about going to see SU.

Had friends who have tickets with us for the USC game that I had to talk of the ledge after the Groupon deal came out.
