I decided to see how Benny Williams' freshmen year compares to other freshmen forwards we've had in the past. The database is freshman forwards who played at least 100 minutes in a season in the Carrier Dome era, (I don't have minutes for years before that). The numbers are from my "net points" system: M = minutes per game, with the total number of games available being the dividend, even if the coach chose not to use the player. P = points per 40 minutes R= rebounds per 40 minutes A= assists per 40 minutes S = steals per 40 minutes B= blocks per 40 minutes (positive) + = the total of P + R + A + S + B MFG = missed field goals per 40 minutes MFT = missed free throws per 40 minutes TO = turnovers per 40 minutes PF = personal fouls per 40 minutes (negative) - = the total of MFG + MFT + TO + PF NP = “Net Points”, the positive minus the negative per 40 minutes OE = Offensive efficiency: P minus MFG and MFT FG = Floor Game: NP minus OE Sean Kerins, 1980-81 12.1m 11.9p 7.7r 1.5a 1.1s 0.7b 22.9+ 4.4mfg 0.7mft 2.2to 4.5pf 11.8- = NP: 11.1 OE: 6.8 FG: 4.3 Rafael Addison 1982-83 18.5m 18.3p 6.9r 2.6a 1.3s 0.7b 29.8+ 7.1mfg 1.5mft 2.8to 4.6pf 16.0- = NP: 13.8 OE: 9.7 FG: 4.1 Wendell Alexis 1982-83 16.0m 14.2p 11.1r 1.2a 1.3s 1.2b 29.0+ 4.9mfg 1.3mft 2.3to 5.8pf 14.3- = NP: 14.7 OE: 8.0 FG: 6.7 Howie Triche 1983-84 3.4m 14.3p 9.1r 1.5a 1.8s 0.0b 26.7+ 8.8mfg 1.5mft 3.3to 5.9pf 19.5- = NP: 7.2 OE: 4.0 FG: 3.2 Herman Harried 1984-85 6.6m 7.4p 8.9r 0.8a 0.5s 0.3b 17.9+ 6.8mfg 3.2mft 3.2to 5.0pf 18.2- = -0.3NP -2.6OE 2.3FG Rodney Walker 1985-86 12.6m 10.5p 9.9r 0.6a 0.9s 0.4b 22.3+ 4.9mfg 1.5mft 1.7to 7.1pf 15.2- = 7.1NP 4.1OE 3.0FG Derrick Coleman 1986-87 30.6m 15.6p 11.4r 1.5a 1.5s 2.3b 32.3+ 4.7mfg 1.7mft 2.3to 4.1pf 12.8- = 19.5NP 8.1OE 11.4FG Stevie Thompson 1986-87 12.2m 16.6p 6.0r 2.4a 0.6s 1.9b 27.5+ 7.2mfg 3.4mft 3.8to 4.0pf 18.4- = 9.1NP 6.0OE 3.1FG Billy Owens 1988-89 32.0m 16.3p 8.7r 3.7a 2.1s 1.2b 32.0+ 5.9mfg 1.7mft 2.5to 3.6pf 13.7- = 18.3NP 8.7OE 9.6FG Dave Johnson 1988-89 14.6m 11.5p 5.5r 2.7a 1.3s 0.3b 21.3+ 5.2mfg 2.4mft 1.8to 5.2pf 14.6- = 6.7NP 3.9OE 2.8FG Tony Scott 1988-89 7.8m 14.6p 6.0r 3.1a 2.0s 1.7b 27.4+ 7.1mfg 1.1mft 4.0to 5.1pf 17.3- = 10.1NP 8.2OE 1.9FG Scott McCorkle 1990-91 10.6m 15.9p 6.4r 4.2a 1.3s 1.0b +28.8 5.4mfg 2.0mft 2.2to 5.1pf -14.7 = 14.1NP 8.5OE 5.6FG Lawrence Moten 1991-92 33.8m 21.6p 7.1r 2.3a 1.7s 1.3b +34.0 7.2mfg 1.9mft 3.0to 3.2pf -15.3 = 18.7NP 9.6OE 9.1FG Glenn Sekunda 1991-92 8.0m 13.6p 6.6r 1.8a 1.6s 0.2b +23.8 9.3mfg 1.1mft 2.7to 7.3pf -20.4 = 3.4NP 3.2OE 0.2FG Luke Jackson 1991-92 6.9m 9.5p 7.0r 2.1a 2.7s 1.2b +22.5 5.8mfg 0.9mft 4.2to 5.5pf -16.4 = 6.1NP 2.8OE 3.3FG John Wallace 1992-93 29.8m 14.9p 10.2r 1.8a 1.6s 1.8b +30.3 5.4mfg 1.1mft 4.3to 3.5pf -14.3 = 16.0NP 8.4OE 7.6FG Chuckie Gelatt 1993-94 9.3m 10.6p 8.4r 0.6a 2.4s 0.6b +22.6 7.1mfg 0.8mft 2.9to 6.3pf -17.1 = 5.5NP 2.7OE 2.8FG Todd Burgan 1994-95 11.1m 14.6p 7.9r 1.9a 2.1s 0.4b +26.9 5.6mfg 1.3mft 3.1to 6.0pf -16.0 = 10.9NP 7.7OE 3.2FG Bobby Lazor 1994-95 7.8m 12.1p 9.1r 1.4a 1.4s 1.2b +25.2 4.7mfg 3.0mft 1.9to 5.3pf -14.9 = 10.3NP 4.4OE 5.9FG Eric Williams 1997-98 8.4m 14.3p 11.4r 2.9a 1.7s 1.0b +30.3 3.8mfg 2.9mft 6.0to 5.0pf -17.7 = 12.6NP 7.6OE 5.0FG Kueth Duany 1999-2000 9.3m 13.7p 8.2r 1.4a 1.4s 1.2b +25.9 7.6mfg 0.6mft 2.9to 4.3pf -15.4 = 10.5NP 5.5OE 5.5FG Hakim Warrick 2001-02 17.4m 14.0p 11.0r 1.2a 1.3s 1.4b +28.9 5.0mfg 2.4mft 2.6to 4.7pf -14.7 = 14.2NP 6.6OE 7.6FG Josh Pace 2001-02 12.2m 14.2p 6.7r 2.6a 3.0s 0.4b +26.9 6.1mfg 1.5mft 2.3to 3.5pf -13.4 = 13.5NP 6.6OE 6.9FG Carmelo Anthony 2002-03 36.4m 24.4p 11.0r 2.4a 1.7s 0.9b +40.4 10.5mfg 2.2mft 2.4to 2.4pf -17.5 = 22.9NP 11.7OE 11.2FG Demetris Nichols 2003-04 14.2m 9.9p 5.3r 1.4a 1.4s 1.5b 19.5+ 7.2mfg 0.9mft 1.4to 4.3pf 13.8- = 5.7NP 1.8OE 3.9FG Terrence Roberts 2003-04 7.6m 9.3p 9.0r 0.8a 1.9s 1.7b 22.7+ 6.4mfg 1.9mft 2.7to 7.6pf 18.6- = 4.1NP 1.0OE 3.1FG Paul Harris 2006-07 21.7m 15.9p 13.1r 3.0a 1.5s 1.1b 34.6+ 6.5mfg 2.8mft 3.5to 3.6pf 16.4- = 18.2NP 6.6OE 11.6FG Donte Greene 2007-08 35.8m 19.8p 8.0r 2.3a 1.4s 1.8b 33.3+ 9.7mfg 1.2mft 2.9to 3.2pf 17.0- = 16.3NP 8.9OE 7.4FG Rick Jackson 2007-08 12.9m 11.5p 9.3r 1.7a 1.3s 3.9b 27.7+ 4.1mfg 2.2mft 2.8to 3.9pf 13.0- = 14.7NP 5.2OE 9.5FG Kris Joseph 2008-09 12.1m 10.1p 7.1r 1.5a 2.6s 0.7b 22.0+ 5.2mfg 2.7mft 2.4to 3.1pf 13.4- = 8.6NP 2.2OE 6.4FG CJ Fair 2010-11 18.6m 13.7p 8.2r 0.9a 1.7s 1.7b 26.2+ 4.6mfg 1.7mft 1.8to 2.6pf 10.7- = 15.5NP 7.4OE 8.1FG Rakeem Christmas 2011-12 11.5m 9.6p 10.2r 0.7a 1.0s 2.8b = 24.3+ 3.0mfg 1.1mft 2.2to 5.9pf = 12.2- = 12.1NP 5.5OE 6.6FG Jerami Grant 2012-13 14.3m 10.8p 8.3r 1.3a 1.2s 1.2b = 22.8+ 4.5mfg 2.2mft 1.8to 3.8pf = 12.3- = 10.5NP 4.1OE 6.4FG Tyler Roberson 2013-14 8.1m 10.6p 9.4r 1.2a 1.0s 1.0b = 23.2+ 8.1mfg 1.7mft 1.7to 4.2pf = 15.7- = 7.5NP 0.8OE 6.7FG Chris McCullough 2014-15 28.1m 13.2p 9.8r 1.6a 2.4s 2.9b = 29.9+ 5.2mfg 2.8mft 3.1to 3.6pf = 14.7- = 15.2NP 5.2OE 10.0FG Malachi Richardson 2015-16 34.4M 15.6P 5.0R 2.4A 1.4S 0.3B = 24.7+ 8.2MFG 1.4MFT 2.5TO 2.9PF = 15.0- = 9.7NP 6.0OE 3.7FG Tyler Lydon 2015-16 30.3M 13.4P 8.3R 1.5A 1.5S 2.4B = 27.1+ 4.9MFG 0.7MFT 1.7TO 3.6PF = 10.9- = 16.2NP 7.8OE 8.4FG Oshae Brissett 2017-18 38.1m 15.7p 9.3r 1.0a 1.2s 0.8b = 28.0+ 8.4mfg 1.3mft 2.4to 2.0pf = 14.1- = 13.9NP 6.0OE 7.9FG Marek Dolezaj 2017-18 27.9m 8.3p 6.9r 2.2a 1.2s 1.1b = 19.7+ 2.6mfg 0.9mft 2.0to 3.9pf = 9.4- = 10.3NP 4.8OE 5.5FG Matthew Moyer 2017-18 16.8m 7.7p 8.2r 1.1a 0.9s 0.7b = 18.6+ 2.7mfg 1.3mft 1.7to 3.5pf = 9.2- = 9.4NP 3.7OE 5.7FG Quincy Guerrier 2019-20 20.3m 13.5p 10.4r 1.2a 0.9s 1.5b = +27.5 4.8mfg 2.5mft 2.6to 5.1pf = 15.0- = 12.5NP 6.2OE 6.3FG Benny Williams 2021-22 11.5m 6.0p 4.7r 0.9a 1.7s 1.1b = +14.4 5.5mfg 0.9mft 2.7to 3.3pf = 12.4- = 2.0NP 0.4OE 2.4FG That's 42 forwards. One of them, Herman Harried had a lower NP per 40 minutes than Benny. Herman was the only one who played 100+ minutes and had minus net points. Above Benny are Glenn Sekunda (3.4), Terrence Roberts (4.1) and Chucky Gelatt (5.5). The first guy above Benny who had a substantial career is a player many have hopefully been comparing Benny to: Demetris Nichols (5.7). Then there's Luke Jackson (6.1) and Dave Johnson (6.7). Benny is at 2.0. It doesn't suggest that this is a slow start to a great career.
