Strong Recruiting Brings Syracuse's National Ranking Up to #32 (PS; Mink)

With Syracuse picking up its eighth verbal commitment in the 2015 recruiting class on Thursday, it's a good time to take a peek at the most recent recruiting rankings.

Dana Levine, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end/outside linebacker, is not yet ranked by any of the major recruiting services, so it's difficult to say how his commitment will truly affect the team rankings.

And Davante Davis, a cornerback from Booker T. Washington High School in Florida, has seen his recruiting heat up in recent weeks, with Alabama the latest power program to offer the Syracuse commit. Can Syracuse hang onto him over the next eight months?

Florida DE Dana Levine Verbals to Syracuse (PS; Mink)

Dana Levine, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end/outside linebacker, has given a verbal commitment to Syracuse University.

Levine, from Hallandale High School in Hallandale, Fla., is the first defensive lineman to commit to Syracuse in the 2015 recruiting class. He also held scholarship offers from UAB and Alcorn State.

Levine is not yet ranked by any of the major recruiting services but was among players who participated in the 2014 Miami Nike Football Training Camp in March. Syracuse commits Colin Byrne, Sam Clausman, Gerald "Bubba" Robinson and Davante Davis also attended the camp.

SU Verbal CB Davante Davis Fielding Major Offers from Georgia, Ohio State, etc. (PS; Mink)

It would be a bit of an understatement to say Booker T. Washington cornerback Davante Davis' recruitment has taken off in the last couple of weeks.

When he verbally committed to Syracuse on May 6, Davis held offers from schools such as Cincinnati, Florida International and Florida Atlantic. Virginia was his only other equity conference offer.

Since then, the 6-foot-2½, 195-pound cornerback has received offers from Ohio State, Georgia, South Carolina, Illinois, Louisville, West Virginia and Wisconsin, bringing on a whole new challenge for the Syracuse coaching staff if it wants to keep Davis in its 2015 recruiting class.

This new wave of offers was not totally unexpected. Davis, who previously played at Homestead High School in Homestead, Fla., saw his junior season cut short by a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Game-by-Game Predictions for Syracuse's 2014 Season (faniq.com; Kaminsky)

...
I’ll share my predictions for Syracuse’s 2014 season. Don’t be surprised if things get shaky, the Orange faces five opponents that were ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

8/29 vs. Villanova: W

2014 will begin with a bang for the Orange; I have them winning this game handedly. You’ll want to pay special attention to the offense in this, we’ll see if McDonald lives up to his word and speeds things up. The defense will need to get conditioned early for that style of play.

9/13 at Central Michigan: W

Expect this to be a loud environment to play in for the Orange. However, for the first away game of the season, Central Michigan is a good draw. The Chippewas didn’t beat anyone they shouldn’t have in 2013 and I don’t think they’ll beat Syracuse. We’re off to a good start here, but it’ll get bumpy soon.

9/20 vs. Maryland: W

The Orange manhandled Maryland in 2013 by a score of 20-3. The defense was all over the Terrapins’ rushing attack and I can easily see them doing it again. Coach Randy Edsall is still trying to find an identity for his new program. I like the ACC taking it to the new Big Ten in this one.

9/27 vs. Notre Dame: L

Now we begin the meat grinder part of the schedule. Notre Dame is Notre Dame, plus it’s at MetLife Stadium and I’d bet there will be a ton of Irish fans making the trip. Regardless of whom wins the quarterback battle at Notre Dame (Everett Golson vs. Malik Zaire), they’ll have an advantage over Hunt. This one could definitely be close, but I’ll give the Irish the early edge.

GT's Joe Hamilton, UNC's Dre' Bly Among 16 Inductees to College Football Hall of Fame (theacc.com)

Greensboro, N.C.—A pair of former consensus All-Americans from the Atlantic Coast Conference, quarterback Joe Hamilton of Georgia Tech and North Carolina cornerback Dre’ Bly, have been tabbed for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

Is ND Getting a Raw Deal with ACC Partnership? (nbcsports.com; McGuire)

Notre Dame’s decision to leave the Big East as it was crumbling led to a new deal with the ACC that would provide a conference home for all sports except football and ice hockey. As far as Notre Dame head coach Brian Kellyis concerned, the Irish may be getting the short end of the stick of the deal compared to the rest of the athletic programs in South Bend.

“Football had to give up a little bit, relative to flexibility and scheduling by taking on with the ACC,” Kelly told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports in a recent podcast interview. “Therefore, it’s put us in a very difficult situation scheduling and unfortunately it’s taken some of the schools like a Michigan and Michigan State, off our schedule. Because we’re going to keep Navy, we’re going to keep Stanford and we’re going to keep USC. Those three schools are not coming off and those are etched in stone. So now, add your ACC schools with those three schools and you’re really limited as to where you can go.”

7 Reasons to Care About the Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Team in the Final Four (PS; Carlson)

The Syracuse women's lacrosse team drew a crowd of 652 people last weekend as it beat Boston College to advance to a third consecutive NCAA Final Four.

That's a far cry from the nationally known basketball program or the regionally relevant football team.

But the women, ranked No. 2 in the country, are the only group from SU to make it this far in 2013-14. The Orange's Final Four effort starts with Friday's game against No. 11/15 Virginia (5 p.m.) and, with a win, SU will play the winner of Maryland and Northwestern for a national title on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

You've got two days to join the bandwagon, find a reason to care and give yourself a sports interest on Memorial Day weekend.

Here's why you should root for the women's lacrosse team:

1. It would be historic: A national championship would be the first by a women's program in Syracuse school history.
