The Eagles, whose 7-4 record last season included a year-ending victory at Florida, joined fellow former FCS power Appalachian State in joining the Sun Belt. But the program of Erk Russell and Paul Johnson is also scrapping the triple option in favor of a spread option under new coach Willie Fritz. In his inimitable way, Johnson (now the coach at Georgia Tech) would point out that a basic formation in the triple option and a spread option is simply a matter of turning slotbacks into receivers and pushing them further away from the ball. Fair enough. But while Fritz's offense probably won't be absurdly pass-happy, it will lead to an increased reliance on his quarterbacks' arms. That's always a dicey predicament when a team makes this sort of philosophical shift.
