Many believe Syracuse has one of the toughest schedules in the nation, a slate that includes a three-week stretch with games against Notre Dame, Louisville and defending national champion Florida State. Also on the schedule is a road trip to Clemson, a home date with Duke and back-to-back road games at Pittsburgh and Boston College to close the season. Syracuse is entering Year 2 of the Scott Shafer era and ishoping to improve upon its 7-6 record from a year ago. It opens the 2014 season on Aug. 29, a Friday night, againstFootball Championship Subdivision opponent Villanova. ... Countdown to ACC Kickoff: Syracuse Faces Rough October Schedule (PS; Stevens) With the ACC's annual Kickoff event looming on July 20-21 in Greensboro, N.C., it's time to offer a quick first look at each of the conference's 14 football teams. Up today is Syracuse. 2013 record: 7-6 2013 postseason: Beat Minnesota in the Texas Bowl Last season without a bowl appearance: 2011 Coach: Scott Shafer (7-6 in one season) Coordinators: George McDonald (offense, 2nd season), Chuck Bullough (defense, 2nd season) All-conference returnees: S Durell Eskridge (third team), T Sean Hickey (honorable mention) Notable losses: DT Jay Bromley, C Macky MacPherson, TB Jerome Smith Rising name to know: WR Steve Ishmael. In the wake of K.J. Williams failing to qualify, Ishmael might be the most likely freshman receiver to make an impact with the Orange this season. Syracuse didn't have a 500-yard receiver last season, so there should be some opportunity for a talented newcomer to earn a role this year. Ishmael, who committed just before signing day, could emerge as that guy. ... College Football Steven's College Football Ranking/Haiku Series: Nos. 111-115 (PS; Stevens) The college football look ahead — a project covering every bowl subdivision team — continues with a service academy with a new coach and two FBS newcomers 115. GEORGIA SOUTHERN There are two major changes around the storied Georgia Southern program this season, and strangely enough, a move up to college football's bowl subdivision might not be the most curious. The Eagles, whose 7-4 record last season included a year-ending victory at Florida, joined fellow former FCS power Appalachian State in joining the Sun Belt. But the program of Erk Russell and Paul Johnson is also scrapping the triple option in favor of a spread option under new coach Willie Fritz. In his inimitable way, Johnson (now the coach at Georgia Tech) would point out that a basic formation in the triple option and a spread option is simply a matter of turning slotbacks into receivers and pushing them further away from the ball. Fair enough. But while Fritz's offense probably won't be absurdly pass-happy, it will lead to an increased reliance on his quarterbacks' arms. That's always a dicey predicament when a team makes this sort of philosophical shift. To do it at a delicate time, when the Eagles are taking a step up in competition, could prove disastrous in the short term. ...
