Frosty or the Orgeron!?

Who really has any idea what Mr. Coyle has in his head and what he’s going to do about a new HC. But as long as we’re talking about the two candidates being bantered about the board – here’s some info on them. Of course I suppose Frost would want the HC position as we know Orgeron already does. Frost has proven he’s an offensive star on the field and as a coach. Currently taking a year of coaching defensive minded Orgeron recruits the South obviously concentrating on defensive linemen and he’s great at what he does. I see a combination here. Too bad we can’t get both? But, really it’s all about the money isn’t it? Who do you bring in? Syracuse, if it wants to return to its prominent days as a FB team that would rival and compliment BB, has to pony up salary wise – or this frustrating carousel will keep going around in circles forever. Going back to my time at SU to be successful using SU players as examples, I personally want a QB that can command an offense and provide results – one that has football smarts, has a gun but also finesse in his passing game and can run a 4.5 if he needs to, some past great examples come to mind like McNabb, Graves, Mc Pherson, a 4-5 star back(s) like Little or/and Csonka. Receivers like Harrison, Monk, Moore, Ismail. Ben could recruit but you also had established players you used as recruiting tools. IMO you need a great QB, feature back(s), players that can catch the ball and an offensive system that they can win with a pro style or spread offense.

Jack Frost has played/coached and achieved these results:

Frost began his collegiate career as a two-year letterman at
Stanford in 1993 and ’94 before transferring to Nebraska in 1995. The Huskers’ two-year starter and 1997 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award finalist quarterbacked teams to a 24-2 record while completing 192 of 359 passes for 2,677 yards and 18 career touchdowns. Included was a senior season in which he became only the 10th player in college football history to both run (1,095 yds.) and pass (1,237 yds.) for 1,000 yards in a single season.

After the departure of Kelly, the
University of Oregon promoted Helfrich to head coach and Frost was later officially announced as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on January 31, 2013. In his first season as Oregon's offensive coordinator, Frost's offense set a school record for total offense in a season at 7,345 yards, besting the old mark of 7,319 in 2011, which happened during a 14-game season. Oregon finished the season with an 11–2 record and a top-ten ranking after beating Texas 30–7 in the 2013 Alamo Bowl.

Former USC interim head coach Ed Orgeron is considered one of the better recruiting coaches in college football. That is one of the reasons LSU has hired him as a defensive line coach, and Orgeron’s voicemail message proves he has gotten to work immediately.

On Tuesday, ESPN Baton Rouge’s Culotta and The Prince Show decided to give Orgeron an unscheduled phone call. They got his voicemail instead, which was probably just as good of a result. Here’s the audio:

“Hi, this is coach Ed Orgeron with LSU football,” the recording said. “Sorry I can’t take your call right now, but I’m out recruiting the best football players in the country for LSU.”

Orgeron, who was born and raised in Louisiana, even included an LSU battle cry at the end.

"He's here at five in the morning, and he's one of the last to leave," said LSU director of player personnel Austin Thomas, who worked with Orgeron at both USC and Tennessee. "He's a machine. He goes home and gets five hours of sleep, and he's like the Energizer Bunny the next morning. He's up and ready to go. You get here at 6, and he's already been on the phone with two or three guys on their way to school or a few parents while they were on their way to work. ...

"Sometimes you have to just sit back and marvel at the job that he does. He's one of a kind. He's very, very effective and very, very good at connecting with people. From mom to dad to everybody that matters in a kid's recruitment, it's amazing at how he builds a bond with them. The amount of information he gathers is second to none. The whole recruiting process, it's who he is."

Many in the coaching ranks believe Orgeron is the best recruiter in the game today, and his track record could easily put him in the discussion as one of the best ever.

The job Orgeron did as the recruiting coordinator at USC under Pete Carroll was legendary, as he assembled a string of classes that returned the Trojans to glory. Orgeron didn't flourish as a head coach at Ole Miss, but he laid the foundation for Houston Nutt's success in Oxford with the high-profile talent he brought in, such as
Michael Oher, Dexter McCluster and Mike Wallace. Orgeron also helped recruit and coach other stars such as Warren Sapp, Cortez Kennedy, Mike Patterson, Dan Williams and Leonard Williams over the years at Miami, Tennessee and USC.

Who do you get and do you really want Syracuse to be a major factor in football again or remain a consistent disappointment to the school, ACC, and the Syracuse community? Coaches can use colleges as a stepping stone and that’s OK but they are more interested in staying put if they win and have a salary commensurate with what others are making at a high level. We’re a private, small school. We’ll see how smart Coyle is both in addressing funding and getting results facility wise and coaching. Young, smart, offensive whiz or seasoned recruiting master? Here we go again. GO SU!

Frost is unproven as a HC, we have no clue what kind of staff he can build. The staff is critical. He'll bring the Oregon offense here, but that offense requires the right kind of QB to make it really fly. Maybe we've already got that QB right now in Dungey or one of the QB recruits should they stay. I don't not view Frost as an automatic winner. The Duck offense sputtered without Adams at QB this season under Frost's direction.

Orgeron by contrast has high clout and knows great coaches from coast to coast. I believe he'd put together a better staff than Frost could. He's also the best recruiter. I'd pick Orgeron b/c we need 4 star guys to be great.

I keep thinking Coyle is entirely focused on someone else not in this conversation.

Oregon's sputter would be better than our O.

I like Frost but I think I've decided that Orgeron is the better choice based on recruiting prowess alone. He also fits the previous HC experience criteria so many people have.

Some feel Orgeron is a bit shady. Me - I have no idea. For those with an informed opinion - how shady on a scale of 1-10?

Frost recruited a lot of four star kids from California to Arizona to Missouri to Florida

He can recruit

I hope if he is the choice, he brings the Oregon passing game coordinator and OL coach with him

Given that Syverud has replaced the entire compliance department and every new hire under Coyle has a compliance background, Orgeron's history is going to be a non starter as a head coach.

Might keep him off the staff completely.

I think it will be someone nobody knows... And the critics will be out in full force.

Like head coach of South east Louisiana southern state bulldogs.
