FSU AD: Couldn't match A&M's Fisher pursuit

Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox said Saturday the reason Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M is because the Seminoles simply could not compete with the Aggies' finances.

This tells me how far we are behind in finances, facilities and overall program. Also tells me that if someone comes with an offer for our coach at any time, we most likely aren't keeping him. Whether that be Dino or after Dino.

This carousel has given a bunch of coaches raises too, good for them.

You didn't realize this already? Not only do we not have that kind of money, even if we did, we would never spend it. FSU isn't broke. They simply drew a line and said, no mas. I think aTm's decadence and depravity can only be matched by a few programs. They strike me as an outlier even for the SEC.

I can only speak for myself, but if SU ever enters into an arms race with OSU, PSU, aTm, Clemson, etc., i will stop donating to the Athletic Department. My money can be better spent feeding and clothing the needed. It wouldn't surprise me if lots of SU fans felt this way.

Sorry but expecting a school to guarantee 75 million over 10’years for a college football coach is insane.

I don’t blame Wilcox one iota for not matching that offer.
Jimbo has job security that basically ties him to A&M. FSU could probably match the 7.5 per year if they wanted Jimbo but no way would I give him 10 years of it guaranteed.

They are crazy for football in Texas. It starts at the HS level where some of their facilities are better than some colleges.

Insane is right. The difference between the top 20 college football coaches is access to talent and good assistants. I think that Joe Moreland is as good a coach as most and given A&Ms resources would do as well as Jimbo.
Consistency in staff is critical, especially when you are running a specific system so i agree with the long term deal. Just not the amount.

at some point they have to figure out a way to cap salaries if nothing else for the public perception and to level the playing field on part of the equation

We are in the middle in terms of facilities and we all know that.

We aren't ever going to compete with the "big boys" we need to find our niche, do it well and hopefully this will be Dino's destination job.

If not, continue the cycle every 3-5 years. On the bright side if someone poaches are coach that must mean we are winning!

One school draws 60-75k a game and one school draws 100k. One school has oil money and one doesn't. One school spent $85M on recent renovations and one school spent $485M on recent renovations.

Not surprising the Aggies could throw out $75M on the table and pay off Sumlin. However, FSU has three national championships since they started playing football in the 1947 and the Aggies haven't had one since the 1930s

All the more reason to go after a coach like Jimbo. They have everything else, just need a coach that has been there before.

Tells me there are people with some pretty backwards priorities.

Nah not way behind, just fiscally responsible.

Money doesn’t guarantee success. Jimbo is still going to need a quarterback

It's a lot of money for a coach that hasn't done anything (for FSU standards) outside of having Jameis.

aTm has the NCAA's largest athletic budget and the largest student population in the P5. There obvious are advantages that go with that... especially when the coach you want has had his fanbase turn on him.

There are plenty of great coaches that have stuck with smaller schools because they were treated right, provided reasonable resources, and had the support of their fanbase.

Jimbo has to to want to leave too. I doubt it was solely the money.

Dino will use some kind of calculus - and we don’t know what that is. I think money always plays a part - just not sure it’s *the* thing for everyone.

So true - seems these coaches make their reputations on one "generational QB" and, like a lottery winner buying the right ticket, become rich for it. Charlie Strong at Louisville had Teddy Bridgewater, Willie Taggart at USF had Quinton Flowers, Tom Herman at Houston had Greg Ward, and no doubt you guys can think of more such examples.

In that same article referenced, the FSU AD said "We're getting there. The ACC Network is going to be up in '19, so there will be additional resources coming into Florida State, just as all the other ACC schools, so at some point in time we may have the resources Texas A&M has ... We are very successful with the resources that we have and we're going to continue to be successful with the resources we have and we're going to build on that when we get additional resources coming in through the network."

Oh quit it, FSU, as you said , drew a line in the sand and i give them credit. If they were still 100% behind jimbo, the $$$ would have emerged.

They don't want the playing field leveled...lol. That's the point to this.

If a Head Coach can win and pack a stadium to near 100,000 folks paying top dollar those 6 or 7 home games a year he (the head coach) become the money maker that bank rolls the whole athletic department and other academic areas with the school.

there may be 10 teams that dont want a level field.. but i think there are about 60 who do.

There are levels to this stuff...As crazy as it sounds FSU is a level below the tA&M, Bama, tOSU, Clemson’s of the world. Just think if FSU knows they can’t compete against the top, then how the hell is Syracuse. It’s crazy to think we are actually in the same division as some of the schools we try to compete against.

What’s carpetbagger ‘nole think of this?

Exactly my point, a big state school that has all the resources that the SEC schools have, (or should have) publicly saying that they can't compete with a middle level SEC school.

Also what will be the effect of Trumps new tax overhaul on the donation part of the equation when giant donors no longer get a tax deduction for those giant donations? What will that do to the landscape of big time college athletics? Some schools rely on this heavily, especially the SEC.
