Breaking down the plays with down and distance, the offense was, as most have observed, well balanced until the last quarter when Lester has nothing to lose by throwing it 74% of the time. He was not kidding when he said he wanted to establish the run game and Gulley was his preferred back. Gulley got the ball 14 times on first down (12 runs and 2 passes) or 48% of the time. Gulley averaged 3.3 yards per carry on 1st down and caught 1 of 2 passes for 5 yards. All told, Gulley touched the ball or was targeted on an incomplete pass a total of 24 times or 35% of the plays. Amazingly, we never had longer than 11 yards to go for a first down or goal. When was the last time that happened? The only tendency I noticed thus far was Lester passed on third and short (5 or less) every time but one. As we get a larger sample we will learn more.
