Dowling used to write articles in the NYT arguing against the athletic department. The faculty seem to have settled into the position that they’ll gladly cash the Big Ten checks - they just don’t want the Rutgers AD to get any big ideas about actually being competitive for championships (women’s basketball used to be an accepted exception, but with it getting more media attention that is likely changing).
