Dino Babers: Syracuse doesn’t have depth ‘because it gets bought away’

Babers spoke briefly about how the transfer portal and NIL affect roster construction and depth.

This is a discouraging outlook to say the least. He sounds frustrated and I think he is right. You have to wonder if we can compete or even try to compete in this uneven environment.

Doesn’t SU ‘buy away’ depth from other schools, too?
Wohlabaugh, Bellamy, Gould, Reed, Farmer, Ingraham, and others I’ve missed.
It flows both ways.
And it’s only going to get more chaotic.

And it’s only going to get more chaotic.

I wouldn't say "buy" for those players. Maybe Farmer, but it sounds like he had discipline issues with the new staff, more than we poached him away. Reed was a JUCO and the rest were players that were largely not playing and wanted a better situation.

I am not saying this is a bad thing. We need to use the portal this way, but it is not "buying" players away.

I was referencing the words used by Dino to make a comment that SU is responsible for reducing other teams' depth, too.
I don't think it made a lot of sense of Dino to use the situation to complain about losing players in the portal.
Yes, SU has significant money disadvantages but Dino has the opportunity, just like everyone else, to use the portal to add depth to the team.
I don't think it was one of his better moments at the microphone.
