They were a powerhouse in my youth, going undefeated four times, losing just a game four other times and two games three other times between 1950 and 1966. They won naitonal championships in 1952 and 1965. Ben Schwartzwalder and SU alum Duffy Daugherty were close friends and their teams often scrimmaged together and sometimes played each other. Biggie Munn had built them into a national power. Before that he'd been one of Ozzie Solem's assistants here at Syracuse and replaced Solem as head coach here. Later Dick McPherson and George Perles coached the two schools and were close friends. On top of that, in the subsequent years, the Spartans always seemed to be pretty good but not as good as Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State. All these factor have led me over the years to connect with the Spartans and follow them as my second favorite college football team. I'm thrilled they are going to be in the college football playoff and compete for the national championship for the first time since I was a kid.
