against FBS
this team should not be 51st in pass attempts (again, against FBS)

we're 57th in rushing attempts

all the sacks have made us a balanced offense. we're 128th in sacks allowed. 121st in sack percentage

my go-to stat sites don't have good sack stats unfortunately. when we throw, we throw well on third down for all kinds of yards to go but of course that's not the problem, it's all the throws that don't happen.

we average 2.38 yards per rush on 1st down

this is my biggest disappointment about babers, who i still like. it shouldn't be so hard to run the ball

1.17 yards per rush in our losses

it's really hard to evaluate anything statistically this year.

would love to know sacks by formation and player grouping. tough to eyeball and remember what hurts them most

Beating a dead horse at this point, but we need serious upgrade in o-line talent. Their inability to open running lanes vs even the worst competition has been shocking.
We rank 128th in sacks allowed? Isn't there only like...128 teams at the FBS level? So if the O-line can't protect the QB, and if the O-line can't open holes for our running backs, then the O-line, as it is constructed now, is pretty much useless. Don't see a quick fix for the line. This may be a problem for a few seasons.

we have the same issue most of the teams in the ACC, aweful oline play, just we have one the best throwing Qbs and not one of the QBs that can escape to create yds..

if we can find a way to just be avg running we would have a solid offense.

you go back and watch that nc st game.. so many runs were there for the taking and it seemed like every run one guy didnt do the job. now sometimes the whole line just fell apart..

there is way too much confusion on top of just flat out missing blocks.

and we cant just go power.. even when we go big we dont get push.

that one picture you posted looks like it should've been a touchdown, everyone's blocked, and yet it went for no gain. it must be so frustrating for the coaches

As bad as the oline has been at times , we have misfired on 7-10 TD that were open and not thrown to guys wide open even more than that..

never getting any rhythm to go tempo. and when we get some tempo we have to stop and check for plays..

its also the same thing we saw in YR 1 with Eric in this offense, wide open guys that never got the ball. but he saved plays and the oline was a bit better.

we need to take more shots when we have the field spread and no safety on jackson/harris give the big play guys a shot.

is 3 and out worse with 3 runs than 3 deep shots?

I agree with your concern about the O-Line 100%. The stats are plain for all to see. But is there ever a quick-fix for an O-Line? I don't pretend to know much, and maybe you're right about upgrading talent, filling some holes here and there with a JUCO. But I thought it was the O-Line that took longest to gel, including the back-ups. Coaches and teams who faced us last year were surprised at how we pushed back other, more highly touted Defensive Ends and Tackles opening holes for the RBs and protecting Dungey. We were surprised, too, as fans, I think. Maybe the offensive line just isn't there yet, although hopefully it comes together enough to make a bowl this year. Possibly, they put it all together for next year because I thought there were some pretty good recruits who are presently freshmen & RS frosh. The skill-set players are ready, just hope the O-Line, while lower than we thought, is constantly moving up. Hoping anyway.

I agree with this 1000%. The WR has an advantage. If they have to come back for the ball it's usually a catch or you can get a DPI.

If the corner makes a nice INT on it, so be it. He's probably going right to the ground, and maybe we were going to punt anyway.

Take those shots and force the safeties back more often.

The only reason I'm still optimistic vs some of our more down offensive years in recent history is that I know we have big play ability. We just have to go for it.

Total amateur take here, but it sure looks like the O-line doesn't know what it is doing. I doubt that our guys are so bad physically that they can get whipped with the regularity we are seeing. I suspect that we don't have effective communication of the overall design of the offense, effective instruction in technique, and that (lacking a playbook, right?) there is too much emphasis on fast, dynamic in-the-moment decisions on what to do. Maybe our OL doesn't have the "game smarts" or "football IQ" or whatever you want to call it, to be effective in that kind of environment.

Am I wrong? It seems the guys clearly don't know what they are supposed to be doing, frequently. Are the coaches making it too hard to succeed?

every time we get single high out from the near hash with jackson on the wide we need to think of taking the shot. he has been open. its not like 3rd and short we do much with it anyway.

The play I think can help a ton is the snap pass to Riley in the slot. Half a dozen times a game he lines up with his defender ten yards back. Just get it out to him right after the snap and let him take the 4 yard gain so we've got more manageable downs.

It's always there. We never take it.

Yeah I don’t recall any posts with people specifically complaining about our ranking in completion %, hoping we would be better than 24.

I think if we’re looking at our offense, completion % doesn’t mean a lot. Maybe it shows we’re way too conservative in our passing game.

I think stats people want to see improve vs FBS is:
- Scoring offense = 95 (tied with Pitt)
* really the stat that matters. I’ll take a poor completion % and 24th in scoring all day long.
- Total offense = 87
- 3rd down Conversion = 85
- Red zone conversion = 121 (tied with Rutgers)
* This has been the Achilles heel for DB 3/4 years. We’ve ranked terribly in red zone conversion

I think these are the stats people want to see improved. These stats matter more for our win/losses than having a top 25 completion %. It’s how people think the offense is close to a breakthrough because they’re just watching passes get completed. It feels good but the important stats are scary so far this year.

Last year we were 21st (against fbs) in red zone conversion. 2017 we were 94 and 2016 we were 109.

Easy to see one big factor in our season last year
